Review: YS IX - Monstrum Nox (PS4 Retail)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Monstrous Fun!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Ys-ix-12

Developed by Nihon Falcom Games and published by NIS America, YS IX: Monstrum Nox is the ninth main installment in the long-running YS series, ten if you count Ys Origins, but is this darker brother of the series worth a purchase? We think so and here's why:

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Ys-ix-11

The game has all the typical action-rpg goodness you've come to expect from the series with fast-paced battles, interesting and unique bosses, and a diverse cast of likeable characters. The formula is mostly intact including the raid battles from Ys VIII, but the puzzle-solving has been watered down quite a bit which isn't a good thing, but doesn't hurt the game that much either, much to our surprise. The story is incredibly dark this time around so expect some really sad moments during the game's 8 lengthy chapters!

The game is also a fair bit shorter than its predecessor clocking in at around 30 hours in length if you know what you're doing. The controls are quite responsive and easy to learn which is always a good thing, and the difficulty is fairly challenging even on the normal setting.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Ys-ix-10

The audiovisual-presentation in YS IX is quite good with lush open-world regions, and fantastic special effects and character designs. The only downside visually is that the game doesn't quite look as impressive as its predecessor, YS VIII, but overall it's a really nice looking game. On the audio side of things, the voice acting is superb and the soundtrack is as good as you'd expect from a Nihon Falcom game, which is nothing short of perfection!

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Ys-ix-13

Bottom-Line: With a dark and amazing story, excellent gameplay, solid controls and a top-notch audiovisual-presentation, YS IX: Monstrum Nox is a nearly flawless action-rpg that is an absolute blast to play and as such we give the game a perfect level of recommendation!

Review: Turrican Flashback Collection (PS4 Retail)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Turret Full O' Fun!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Large_45

Developed by Factor 5 and Ratalaika Games, published by ININ Games, and public relations by PR Hound, Turrican Flashback Collection is a great compilation of four highly enjoyable games in the Turrican franchise with loads of visual options and other bonuses that truly make this a worthwhile collection, but how good is it overall? Continue reading to find out!

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Large_47

Turrican Flashback Collection includes Turrican, Turrican 2: The Final Fight, Super Turrican, if and Mega Turrican and each game has some pretty amazing visual options, including several scanlines filters and color filters which is absolute eye-candy, but aside from that the package lacks any real bonus features, but is an overall pretty nice compilation. The gameplay feels something like a cross between Megaman and Contra, but leans more heavily towards being like Contra, the key difference being that this series is quite a bit easier in-terms of difficulty. The power-up system is quite robust, the platforming is challenging, and the bosses require careful strategy to defeat!

The controls are also quite intuitive and easy to learn while the navigation menu in this collection is streamlined and a cinch to navigate. The audiovisual presentation is superb and faithly recreates the retro feel of these games! The visuals are spot-on with little in the way of undesired visual flaws, and the audio sounds just as it did in the original releases of the games in this compilation!

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Large_48

Bottom-Line: With great gameplay that's as enjoyable as it is challenging, excellent controls, and a superb audiovisual presentation that is sure to please, we thoroughly enjoyed every minute that we played of this fantastic compilation and as such we give Turrican Flashback Collection for the PS4 a great level of recommendation to all fans of the action-platformer genre of games!

Review: Space Invaders ~ Forever ( PS4 Retail )

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Invading Our Hearts Forever!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Large_44

Developed by TAITO Games, published by ININ Games, and public relations by PR Hound, Space Invaders: Forever is a handpicked collection of three superb games in the long-running TAITO shmup series, Space Invaders, but is it worth picking up in 2021? We think so and here's why:

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Large_43

The three games in the collection are quite varied and enjoyable with a multiplayer take on the original formula in Space Invaders Gigamax 4 SE. It doesn't do a lot to reinvent the original Space Invader's gameplay outside of 4 player co-op and while a nice novelty it does grow tired fairly fast. Thankfully it is the weakest title in the collection, but it's still not bad for what it is and there is fun in short bursts, so it's still well worth booting up from the title select screen every now and then.

Arkanoid Vs. Space Invaders is a fantastic breakout and shoot 'em up hybrid of the two titular series and is a blast to play. This breakout clone has you reflect the invaders shots back to destroy them and each stage has a specific number of invaders to destroy to beat the level. Seems easy, right? Not quite as not only is there a time limit for each stage, but bricks and other obstacles will interfere with your ability to destroy the pesky invaders. A boss also appears every 15 stages and takes loads of hits to destroy and can often prove to be quite a challenge. Luckily the game is somewhat merciful as it offers power-up's, special attacks, and more that will be quite helpful in beating the game's more difficult stages. This game is definitely one you'll want to play most of the times you boot-up Space Invaders Forever as it is a fantastic and enjoyable title!

Space Invaders Extreme is a modern take on the original Space Invaders formula complete with power-up's, bonus stages, much more complex enemy waves and patterns, and a flashy new coat of paint which is absolute eye candy! The game is as addictive as it is fun and is easily the most enjoyable game in the collection and is well worth the price of the entire package even by itself!

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Space-10

The controls in the collection are silky smoth and quite intuitive and the menus are easy to navigate which is always a good thing. The lack of any sort of bonus content seen in previous ININ arcade collections is a bit of a letdown, but not a deal-breaker. As for the audiovisual presentation, the games are true to the originals, with zero emulation issues, the soundtracks are great, the visuals pop, especially in Arkanoid Vs and Extreme. The navigation menus are also glossy and are pleasant to the eyes!

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Space-11

Bottom-Line: With a great trio of excellent games filled with plenty of amazing gameplay, great controls, and a superb audiovisual presentation, Space Invaders Forever is a great game compilation that is sure to please the fans and as such we give the game a great level of recommendation!

Review: Root Double (Switch Retail)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Double Splasher!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Root-d10

Published by Sekai Games, developed by Regista Games and Yeti Games, and public relations by PR Hound, Double Root is a sci-fi visual novel with all the strengths and pitfalls of the genre, however it shines brilliantly in its unique storytelling! Is this enough to award it with an amazing level of recommendation? We think so and here's why:

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Rootdo10

The story in one possible route of the game is set in a severely damaged nuclear power facility that you must try to escape at all costs, however many suspicious characters and mysteries will stand in your way of the goal. Some of these characters will naturally help, but others have less than helpful ambitions that could spell trouble for your protagonist and allies. The game has a unique system of travel and certain unique features that really flesh-out this rather enjoyable visual novel.

The other route is a slice of life story that shows the daily lives of the protagonist and his friends and is quite lighthearted and bubbly compared to the other story route.

The length of the game of course depends greatly on the player, but a single playthrough should take less than 20 hours for most players. The controls are oddly a bit cumbersome at first, but it's pretty easy to adjust to rather quickly.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Rootdo11

The audiovisual presentation of Root Double is absolutely gorgeous with gorgeous character designs, stylish UI, and great special effects you'd be hard-pressed to find anything unenjoyable about the graphics, and the soundtrack is just as amazing and fits the game like a glove!

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Rootdo12

Bottom-Line:With amazing storytelling, great characters with plenty of growth over the course of the story, and an incredible audiovisual presentation, Root Double is a top-notch sci-fi visual novel that is well worth purchasing if you enjoy the genre and as such, we give the game a nearly perfect level of recommendation!

Review: Umihara Kawase: BaZooKa! (PS4 Retail)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
An Absolute Blast!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Umihar10

Developed by Studio Saizensen, published by ININ Games, and Public Relations by PR Hound, Umihara Kawase BaZooKa is an action-arcade game like no other! Is this a good thing, however? We think so, but you'll need to read the rest of our review to find out why!

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Large_41

The gameplay in Umihara Kawase BaZooKa is quite enjoyable with small platforming stages with unique enemies to annihilate. To win each stage, players must defeat wave after wave of enemies. Some enemies are simple and straightforward to defeat, while others can only be defeated through very specific methods which adds a layer of strategy to the otherwise simplistic arcade-platforming formula. Multiplayer plays a huge role in this title, with online leaderboards, multiplayer co-op, and even competitive battle modes, the game is truly a blast for upto four players!

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Large_42

The final level of each world has a boss to vanquish which is a cut-above the canon fodder that you face in the other stages and can prove quite challenging to beat. As for the game's length, it can be beaten in a single day, but the multiplayer adds countless hours of potential enjoyment to the game. The controls are a bit cumbersome at times, but after a while you start getting used to them, however this is definitely the low-point of the game though it's not something that should sway your decision to purchase the game unless you are really, debating whether or not to get the game and are leaning much more towards not getting the game.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Umihar10

The visuals in Umihara Kawase BaZooKa are quite vibrant and detailed and standout as being super cutesy, but in a way that still has that cool factor that older kids and adults can enjoy, much like the beloved Kirby series. The stages are detailed, the characters are cute and full of life, and even the enemies have a certain charm to them. The audio is great as well with all the sound effects you'd expect from an arcade game and an absolutely charming soundtrack that fits the mood of the game to a tee.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Umihar11

Bottom-Line: With great gameplay, an excellent audiovisual presentation, and superb multiplayer gameplay Umihara Kawase BaZooKa is a great game that has a lot of positive aspects that most fans of the genre will truly enjoy, however awkward controls do make the game take a hit in our overall score of the game, but despite this we still give the game a solid to good level of recommendation!

Review: The Legend of Heroes ~ Trails of Cold Steel IV (PS4 Retail)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The End of A Saga!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Large510

Developed by Nihon Falcom Games and published by NIS America, The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel IV is the final game in the Erabonian storyline in the long-running series and has been highly anticipated by fans, but does the game deliver the quality that fans have come to expect? We think so and here's why:

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Large210

In-terms of story and gameplay, Trails of Cold Steel IV picks up where the third game left off, and while it doesn't immediately get you into the meat of the gameplay, it does quickly recap what happened at the end of ToCS III, just in more detail. Once you do gain control you'll quickly notice that the battles are a good deal more challenging this time around with orders taking a massive drop in efficacy, but aside from that most of the changes in gameplay are pretty minimal outside of the new minigames and few new features that were added in this game.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Large310

The game is quite the beast in-terms of length as well, clocking in at between 100 and 150 hours to beat even on the easiest difficulty. The game has a host of missables as usual which can make earning the platinum trophy quite difficult to obtain without some sort of assistance, such as a guide or walkthrough. The controls in the game are intuitive and easy to learn if you're a newcomer, though we highly recommend playing the games in order to avoid spoilers.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Large410

The audiovisual presentation is absolutely breathtaking as the visuals have seen a increase in detail and the cutscenes in particular look amazing with higher quality special effects than the previous game possessed. The new locations are quite enjoyable and look a good deal better than the returning locations, which still look great and the characters new looks are quite fantastic!

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Large110

The soundtrack also is one of the best in video game history in our honest opinions, it easily has the best soundtrack we've heard since ToCS II and possibly even eclipses the soundtrack of the original Xenoblade Chronicles!

Bottom-Line: With challenging yet amazing gameplay with a ton of content, excellent story, and a top-notch audiovisual presentation, JRPG fans and fans of RPG's in-general will certainly fall in love with this charming and epic role-playing game, and we'd even argue it's the best game in the past 4 or 5 years at the very least. As such, we give The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel IV for the PS4 a perfect level of recommendation!

Review: Bubble Bobble 4 Friends ~ The Baron Is Back (PS4 Retail)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bubble Busting Fun Featuring Baron Von Blubba!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Bbb_sc10

Developed by Taito and ININ Games and published by PR Hound, Bubble Bobble 4 Friends: The Baron Is Back is an expansion to the previously released, Bubble Bobble 4 Friends that adds a new mode with 50 additional stages to the base-game. What do we think about the new content? Continue reading our review to find out the answer to that question!

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Screen11

Bubble Bobble 4 Friends has frantic and highly enjoyable gameplay for 1 to 4 players where you must encase enemies in bubbles and then pop them to defeat said enemies much like in the arcade game back during the 80's. Bonus rounds are back and just as fun as ever, and there are tons of new power-ups to help you defeat your enemies. All in all, the game is a blast that faithfully recreates the nostalgic feel of the original Bubble Bobble. That said as good as the game is, the game is SUPER short and clocks in at less than half the length of the original "game-time not the number of stages" which is the main reason why this game isn't receiving a perfect score.

The entire Bubble Bobble classic arcade game is included in this title which we highly recommend playing! The difficulty is pretty easy and the controls are intuitive and easy to learn which is always a good thing in our opinions. As for the audio-visual presentation, Bubble Bobble 4 Friends has colorful and detailed retro themed graphics that feel like a perfect blend between retro charm and modern flare and it really stands out. And the soundtrack is bubbly and cheerful which fits the game perfectly!

The new tower arcade game featuring Baron Von Blubba, the indestructible bone whale is a nice addition that adds a great deal of extra content to the game. It's basically a challenge mode and is far more difficult than the standard levels in the game. This new mode can be accessed from the arcade machine in the world hub, but only in hard mode. This new mode is also free for those of you who previously purchased BB4F on Nintendo Switch!

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Screen12

Bottom-Line: With great gameplay, flawless controls, and an excellent audio-visual presentation, Bubble Bobble 4 Friends will have you hooked from the get-go, while the inclusion of the original 80's arcade game will keep you coming back for more! The only negative aspect of this game is that the new content is pretty short due to quicker movement and other adjustments and can be finished in a half an hour which does hurt the overall score of the game, however the additional content corrects most of the problems we had with the base-game so we give the game a great level of recommendation!

Score: ★★★★★★★★★☆ 9/10

Review: Giraffe And Annika (PS4 Retail)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Chillaxing Like A Giraffe!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Large_37

Developed by Atelier Mimina Games and published by NIS America, Giraffe And Annika is a very relaxing 3D platforming adventure game hybrid game that is fun to play, but how does it compare to the competition in the genre? Continue reading our review to find out:

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Large_38

The gameplay for the most part is simple 3D Platforming with very casual difficulty that might put-off some hardcore gamers, but it all comes together in a very harmonious way that is both entertaining and enjoyable. The 3D Platforming is interrupted by boss battles which are decided in a sort of rhythm based minigame that are extremely fun in our opinions.

The story is quite simple, but is well-conveyed and is pleasing to watch during the handful of cutscenes that occur over the course of the game. It isn't a blockbuster story by any stretch, but most will likely enjoy it.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Large_39

The controls are intuitive and easy to learn and the game while chill and super easy is still worth playing even if only for its charming story and gameplay! The visuals in the game are cheerful and pleasing to the eyes and will feel like you're playing an actual anime or cartoon with great character details and nice world design. As for the audio, the voice acting, or rather what little there is, is quite pleasing to the ears, while the soundtrack is pretty good albeit not all that memorable.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Large_40

Bottom-Line: With great gameplay, a charming story, excellent controls, and an above average audio-visual presentation we highly recommend the fans of Japanese games and 3D Platformers, however the easy difficulty might be a turn-off for some. Overall we give Giraffe And Annika a good to great level of recommendation!

Review: New Super Lucky's Tale (PS4 Retail)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Luck of A Gamer!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Large_23

Developed by Playful Studios and published by PQube Games, New Super Lucky's Tale is a 3D platformer at its core with lighthearted and fun gameplay that gamers are sure to enjoy, but is it worth the cost of admission? We think so and here's why:

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Large_24

The gameplay in New Super Lucky's Tale is standard 3D Platforming at its very core and doesn't do a whole lot to reinvent the genre, which isn't at all a bad thing as its mechanics are refined and work incredibly well. The game also blends many other genres in the game's various courses including 2D-platforming, a Dance Dance Revolution style level, and much more which all come together brilliantly well and make the experience fun from start to finish! The bosses are also equally enjoyable and all have different mechanics separating them from each previous battle which makes each battle refreshingly enjoyable!

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Large_25

The story of course is lighthearted and isn't important, but still oozes with charm and is fun to watch unfold. Other unique features include massive hub worlds with npc's and even a shop to deck out your character and make him represent who you truly are or just to make the most adorable anamorphic fox ever, it's your choice! The Hauntington Hub even adds a carnival theme with unique elements that really add to the game, but you'll have to reach that point in the game to learn what we mean by that!

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Large_26

The game is pretty easy there's no getting around that fact, yet despite this we never grew bored of the game in the nearly 20 hours it took us to beat the game. This was in no small part due to the unique genre-melding courses in the game, which clearly shows that the developer knows how to keep players entertained through top-notch game design! The controls in the game are easy to learn and even the camera is quite intuitive and never gave us any issues, which is rare to see in a 3D platformer.

The audio-visual presentation in New Super Lucky's Tale is top-notch between gorgeous world design, detailed and cutesy characters that simply ooze with charm, and an excellent art-direction. The soundtrack is also catchy and highly memorable as well. Overall the game is incredible in nearly every aspect!

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Large_27

Bottom-Line: With excellent gameplay, a fun story, superb controls, and a fantastic audio-visual presentation, New Super Lucky's Tale is a top-tier 3D platformer that's worthy of every fan of the genre, the only downside being that the game is a bit on the short side. Overall, however we give the game a nearly perfect level of recommendation!

Review: The Legend of Heroes - Trails of Cold Steel III (Switch Retail)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
An Off-The-Rails Epic Adventure With Class VII!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Waterm23

Developed by Nihon Falcom Games, the developer best-known in the western hemisphere for its Ys series. We have recently fallen in absolute love with the Trails series which is one of the most well thought out series we've ever experienced! Does the third entry in the Trails of Cold Steel arc of the series live up to the previous two games? We think so and here's why!

After a nearly three year wait, Class VII is finally back in session, but this time you, as Rean Shwarzer take on the role of instructor of the class in the newly built Thors Branch Campus. The game starts off quite similarly to the first Trails of Cold Steel title, and there are tons of nods and parallels to the first game between the storytelling and the structure of the game's chapters.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Waterm24

the game is a whopper in length as it can easily take well over 150 hours to do a 100% run and nearly 250 hours minimum to earn the platinum trophy. Divine Knight battles return, but the system has been streamlined and is much more fun this time around!

Battles have also been revamped with new turn bonuses as well as the new order command system that allows you to use BP to issue orders that grant beneficial buffs and effects for a set number of turns which adds another strategic layer to the series' already deceptively deep battles! The menues have been streamlined as well both in and outside of battles and visually look much tidier which is a nice touch!

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Waterm25

The controls are flawless in this game and the game's difficulty is well-balanced regardless of which level of difficulty you select, though Nightmare is not recommended during your first playthrough. The visuals in this game are by far more detailed and gorgeous than the first two Cold Steel titles, with excellent lighting, and amazingly detailed textures and character models! The music is amazing as well, though a few of the best tracks are missing from previous games which is a shame, but otherwise the audio-visual presentation is simply flawless!

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Waterm26

The Nintendo Switch Difference: The Switch version of the game brings with it a slight visual downgrade, but this pales in comparison to the improvement of the frame-rate when compared to the PS4 version. Gone are the slight frequent dips in frames and jerky movement, but even better is that you can play the game on the go with almost no drop in resolution or graphical quality compared to playing in docked mode. Overall we'd say the Switch version is the superior port of this game, the only downside is parts I & II still aren't available on Nintendo's hardware which needs to be rectified at some point.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Waterm27

Bottom-Line: With an amazing story, excellent gameplay, flawless controls, and an absolutely fantastic audio-visual presentation, The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III is one of the best JRPG's of the generation and there's really no reason not to add it to your Nintendo Switch collection of games. better frame-rate and almost no drop in graphical quality in handheld mode make this version the definitive port of the game! We do highly recommend playing the first two Cold Steel games first, however. Overall we give the game a perfect level of recommendation!

Review: Darius Cozmic Collection Arcade (PS4 Retail)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Battling The Aquatic Alien Menace!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Waterm14

Developed by M2, published by ININ, and localized by ININ, Darius Cozmic Collection Arcade is a definitive collection of several of the flagship shoot 'em up's from the famous TAITO series Darius, but is it worth the price of admission? We think so and here's why:

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Waterm11

The gameplay in this arcade collection is frantic high-octane borderline bullet-hell goodness that'll likely hook any fan of the shooter genre hook, line, and sinker! The included games are varied and there are several versions of each game aside from Gaiden that are from various regions or with updated gameplay. The gameplay is slightly different with each game, but the basic gist is you defeat hordes of enemies and avoid a myriad of obstacles and hazards and usually face a mid-boss sometime during each level and face a boss at the end. Defeating an entire wave of enemies usually results in a large sum of bonus points and sometimes leaves you a ship upgrade to boost your firepower, shield, speed, or grants you a powerful silver form with a massive boost in power!

Each game is divided into sectors and at the end of each level you can select one of two. This selection changes based on your previous decisions allowing for a playthrough typically around 6-8 of up to 26 possible courses depending on the game you're playing in the collection! The menu allows you to view online manuals of each game, change difficulty, starting lives, whether or not continues are available, and tons of HUD display options for the on-screen UI. Overall the game offers a considerable amount of customization for each game and is a much-appreciated aspect of the collection!

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Waterm12

The difficulty of the games in this collection is tough-as-nails even on the easy difficulty setting, however the fact that you can add as many continues as you want going forward, it's pretty easy to beat the games, of course getting a competitively high score is another matter entirely. The controls are quite easy to pick up as expected from old-school arcade games, however the original Darius does have noticeably less responsive controls that take some time getting used to, but overall the collection is good in this regard.

As for the audio-visual presentation, the visuals aren't going to impress anyone in today's time, but the mechanical sea creatures that you fight in the games are quite unique and the aesthetics of the backgrounds are a step-above most games of that era. Darius Gaiden in particular looks absolutely amazing for an arcade game released in 1994. As for the audio side of things, the sound effects are of high quality and the soundtrack for each game is quite memorable and fits the games mood perfectly, overall the audio-visual presentation is nearly flawless in this collection.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Waterm13

Bottom-Line: With amazing gameplay, a flawless audio-visual presentation, and a myriad of options available for each game in this collection, any fan of the genre will take the bait and snatch up this collection and the controls work as they were meant to in the original arcade releases which will reel you potential buyers all the way in! We give Darius Cozmic Collection Arcade for the PS4 a great level of recommendation!

Review: Disaster Report 4 (PS4 Retail)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cataclysmic Devastation!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Large_20

Developed by Granzella Inc and published by NIS America, Disaster Report 4 is a disaster survival game where every choice you make affects the game's story and you are always one wrong choice away from certain death. Does this game deserve praise or should it be passed up? Continue reading our review to find out the answer to this all-important question!

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Large_21

The gameplay in Disaster Report 4 is basically that of a survival horror game, except instead of surviving against the supernatural, you must survive a series of natural disasters. It's all there, limited inventory, tools, first aid kits, etc. The dangers are always present and a keen sense of your surroundings is paramount if you don't want to die a horrific death in the game. Helping others can be very helpful later on as they may well save your life later on in the game, but on the other hand they can pose a threat to you if they are less than honorable people. This system of decision making is what makes Disaster Report 4 so great and we truly appreciated the effort Granzella Inc put into these little details in the game!

The UI can be a bit confusing at times and the controls aren't flawless, but they're good enough that we didn't dock any points from the final score of the game. As for the audio-visual presentation, it's pretty good the characters are pretty detailed, the special effects are realistic enough and the sound effects are top-notch and make you feel like you're really in Japan during a mega disaster!

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Large_22

Bottom-Line: With amazing gameplay, good controls, and an above average audio-visual presentation, Disaster Report 4 is a game that every gamer should at least try out and was a amazing experience from beginning to end! As such we give Disaster Report 4 for the PS4 a great level of recommendation!

Review: Bubble Bobble 4 Friends (Switch eShop)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bub And Bob Are Back With Friends!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Screen10

Developed by Taito and published by PR Hound, Bubble Bobble: 4 Friends is a delightful throwback of the classic 80's arcade game, but does this new release live up to the original? We think so and here's why:

The only negative aspect of this game is that the new content is pretty short due to quicker movement and other adjustments and can be finished in a half an hour which does hurt the overall score of the game, but even so we give the game a good level of recommendation!

Luigi's Funsion!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Topics tagged under retail on  - Page 2 Luigi210
Hey there gamers, Bre here with another fun packed game review! Luigi’s Mansion 3 is a fun filled game that brings back the story of our friends Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Toad but giving the story a twist while also featuring the location of our favorite haunted mansion! Our friends this time have found themselves invited onto a fun packed vacation at a resort, but little do they know trouble lies ahead for them! Once at the resort they are met by the hotel owner who’s appearance seems a bit off from the start, and the staff themselves are a bit odd, but hey when isn’t there something odd going on within the Mushroom Kingdom? Our friends get settled into their rooms, but just when it seems they are finally going to get a good vaction things take a turn for the dark side! King Boo is back! And this time he has the help of the hotel owner and the staff!
Topics tagged under retail on  - Page 2 57048810
King Boo has captured Mario, Peach, and the Toads and now it’s up to you and Luigi to get them back! This game is full of a multi-level story mode with puzzles and twists around every corner, and along with it comes back our Gooigi! That’s right you get to play as not only Luigi but Gooigi and the lovable pup Polterpup! It’s up to you to now explore the hotel obtaining objects for Professor E. Gadd and dismantling the ghosts throughout the hotel. Along with a multi-level story mode comes a fun loving multiplayer mode for you and friends featuring Gooigi himself! The things I love the most about this game is the way that it keeps you on your seat around every corner and every floor constantly needing to figure out what will come next! If you have not played this game make sure you do, I give it a great level of recommendation! I can’t wait to finish this game and see what comes next!
Topics tagged under retail on  - Page 2 Luigi410
Pros to this game: Full of puzzles and twists on every floor, multiplayer mode, and features numerous characters!
Cons to this game: I would of liked to see a bit more multiplayer content.
Until next time gamers keep gaming!
Overlord of The Century!
Topics tagged under retail on  - Page 2 Large_12
Developed and published by Nippon Ichi Software, Disgaea 4+ Complete is a collection that compiles Disgaea 4 and all of its DLC into a single bundle and to be honest it is an absolutely amazing deal! Continue reading our review to find out more about this fantastic title!
Topics tagged under retail on  - Page 2 900x_911
Disgaea has always been the epitome of excellence when is comes to Japanese strategy based tactical RPG's and this game is no different with a superb and zany story and excellent gameplay that we'll be talking about shortly, overall this game oozes of quality and any SRPG fan should checkout this amazing series!
Now as for the gameplay itself the game is split into a few different parts, a city hub where you shop, train your units, among other useful things, missions where you battle in strategic grid-based battles against enemy units, and there are online matches to test your mettle against other players! There are other gameplay modes as well, but these are the three primary sections of the game.
Topics tagged under retail on  - Page 2 Large_13
The hub of the game has a ton of various functions as is typical in the series, but there are new things to do such as expeditions, which are basically roguelike missions that can pay players off handsomely assuming they can complete these missions. The story missions are well thought out and the story itself is quite enjoyable.
The controls are easy to learn as expected from a strategy RPG, and the game can be quite challenging at times so don't expect to breeze through the game. The audio-visual presentation is terrific as the characters, objects, and areas are vibrant and detailed and the voice acting and soundtrack are equally as good and fit the game beautifully.
Topics tagged under retail on  - Page 2 Large_14
Bottom-Line: With a humorous story, great gameplay and excellent audio-visual presentation, Disgaea 4 Complete+ will hook fans of the genre almost immediately and the included DLC with many hours of additional content will keep them coming back for more! We give the game a great level of recommendation!
Score: ★★★★★★★★★☆ 9/10
Review: Alliance Alive HD Remaster (PS4 Retail)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

A Demonic Adventure To Restore The World!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Topics tagged under retail on  - Page 2 The-al10
Developed by  Cattle Call Games and published by NIS America, Alliance Alive HD is a remaster of the 3DS JRPG of the same name which was met with a somewhat mixed reception from critics, but we rather enjoyed the game and this version is a great game as well in our opinions! Continue reading our review to find out why we think this game is worth a purchase!
Topics tagged under retail on  - Page 2 Ss-01010
The story in Alliance Alive is pretty good, but is decidedly retro with very simplistic story-telling as well as no voice acting. It all ties together with the old-school look and feel of the game. The game is pretty short only clocking in at around 20 hours in length. As for the gameplay the battles are done in simplistic turn-based fashion with a slight twist to the skill learning formula which is actually quite advanced as you learn skills based on the way you battle, but the algorithm is extremely complex and thus is difficult to figure out what actions trigger certain skills to "spark" and be learned.
The game has a ton of side-quests as well so completionists can expect to add an additional 15-20 or so hours into the game just for the side-quests and if you want to unlock every skill for every character chances are you'll need to sink 80+ hours into this game. As short as the game is, it truly shines in its replayability which is fantastic news! Now for the downsides, the dungeons are too simplistic and can be boring at times, the story is very predictable and uses many overused tropes, there isn't enough variety in enemies, there are a few glitches here and there, though none we experienced were game-breaking, and in-general Alliance Alive is simply solid to good in its best aspects, luckily there isn't a whole lot wrong with the game so it's still a fun game for JRPG fans.
Topics tagged under retail on  - Page 2 Allian10
The audio-visual presentation of the game is quite nice, but of course it won't wow gamers though that's sort of expected from a game that was designed from the ground up to be a love-letter to the classic 32-bit era classics in the genre. The world map feels like it was ripped straight out of a PSOne era JRPG and that's a good thing in our opinions! The character models are gorgeous however thanks to the unique art direction the game uses, and some locales look breathtaking as well, but again it's a result of the amazing art direction rather than the actual graphics engine the game's assets utilize. LUL
The soundtrack is pretty enjoyable as well with some catchy tunes here and there that fit the game quite well, but there are other tracks that feel out of place or are rather forgettable which is a shame, but overall the audio-visual presentation is good!
Topics tagged under retail on  - Page 2 Ss-06110
Bottom-Line: With a good, but cliched story, solid gameplay, and good audio-visual presentation Alliance Alive HD Remaster is an enjoyable experience for all fans of the JRPG genre, but a few issues do hold the game back a bit. Overall, however we give the game a solid to good level of recommendation!
Review: Dragon Star Varnir (PS4 Retail)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The Greatest Manwitch?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Topics tagged under retail on  - Page 2 Giant-10
Developed by Galapagos RPG and published by Idea Factory International, Dragon Star Varnir is a fun RPG that has quite a few unique gameplay features and elements, but is this enough to cement the game as a standout title? We think so and here's why!
Topics tagged under retail on  - Page 2 Dragon10
The story is actually quite unique and drew us in really quickly with an excellent cast of characters that bring the world to life. Dragon Star Varnir has a unique "layered" battle system that not only adds vertical movement rarely seen in JRPG's. The game also uses an advanced weakness system that makes you have to use your head and carefully choose what type or elemental attack to use and even which character should attack which enemy! This might sound overly complex, but the game does a good job with on-screen displays and tutorials so it should be easy for most players to learn the ropes of the game. Also every character also has a field skill that can help you get past obstacles or even earn items and equipment so it's a smart idea to frequently switch between characters!
Another unique thing about the game is the skill system where you must devour dragons to unlock skill trees to unlock abilities, passive skills, and stat upgrades. This forces players to really explore the world and try to devour every type of dragon to bolster each of their characters! The game also allows you to bond with the older witches by gifting them to see events or feed the younger witches dragon meat to keep them from permanently disappearing from the witches den.
Topics tagged under retail on  - Page 2 Giant-11
Dragon Star Varnir is fairly lengthy at over 50 hours in length, but the game can easily take longer due to its difficulty. The controls in the game are easy to learn which is always a good thing. The audio-visual presentation is quite nice with great character and enemy models, and reasonably nice looking dungeons, and the music and voice acting are superb! The game brings back the ecchi transformations from Death End Re;Quest so it's definitely not something we'd recommend playing around younger audiences. Overall the audio-visual presentation is very solid in our opinions.
Topics tagged under retail on  - Page 2 Dragon11
Bottom-Line:With an excellent story with great character development, great gameplay that's both enjoyable and extremely challenging at times, flawless controls, and a very solid audio-visual presentation, Dragon Star Varnier is an excellent game through and through and we highly recommend picking up the game if you're an adult gamer who's a fan of Idea Factory or RPG's in general! We give the game a great level of recommendation!
Review: The Legend of Heroes - Trails of Cold Steel III (PS4 Retail)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

An Off-The-Rails Epic Adventure With Class VII!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Topics tagged under retail on  - Page 2 900x24
Developed by Nihon Falcom Games, the developer best-known in the western hemisphere for its Ys series. We have recently fallen in absolute love with the Trails series which is one of the most well thought out series we've ever experienced! Does the third entry in the Trails of Cold Steel arc of the series live up to the previous two games? We think so and here's why!
After a nearly three year wait, Class VII is finally back in session, but this time you, as Rean Shwarzer take on the role of instructor of the class in the newly built Thors Branch Campus. The game starts off quite similarly to the first Trails of Cold Steel title, and there are tons of nods and parallels to the first game between the storytelling and the structure of the game's chapters.
Topics tagged under retail on  - Page 2 900x25
the game is a whopper in length as it can easily take well over 150 hours to do a 100% run and nearly 250 hours minimum to earn the platinum trophy. Divine Knight battles return, but the system has been streamlined and is much more fun this time around!
Battles have also been revamped with new turn bonuses as well as the new order command system that allows you to use BP to issue orders that grant beneficial buffs and effects for a set number of turns which adds another strategic layer to the series' already deceptively deep battles! The menues have been streamlined as well both in and outside of battles and visually look much tidier which is a nice touch!
Topics tagged under retail on  - Page 2 900x26
The controls are flawless in this game and the game's difficulty is well-balanced regardless of which level of difficulty you select, though Nightmare is not recommended during your first playthrough. The visuals in this game are by far more detailed and gorgeous than the first two Cold Steel titles, with excellent lighting, and amazingly detailed textures and character models! The music is amazing as well, though a few of the best tracks are missing from previous games which is a shame, but otherwise the audio-visual presentation is simply flawless!
Topics tagged under retail on  - Page 2 900x27
Bottom-Line: With an amazing story, excellent gameplay, flawless controls, and an absolutely fantastic audio-visual presentation, The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III is one of the best JRPG's of the generation and there's really no reason not to add it to your PS4 collection of games. We do highly recommend playing the first two Cold Steel games first, however. Overall we give the game a perfect level of recommendation!
Review: Date Alive ~ Rio Reincarnation Part 1 "Rinne Utopia" (PS4 Retail)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Totally Atohkable!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Topics tagged under retail on  - Page 2 Da-1-d10
Developed by Compile Heart and Sting Entertainment and published by Idea Factory, the latest title by the masterminds responsible for the Neptunia series, Date Alive: Rio Reincarnation for the PS4 brings all three currently released Date Alive titles in one package including the two previously Japanese exclusive PS3 titles! How do these visual novels stack-up to their competition? Continue reading our review to find out the answer to this all-important question!
Topics tagged under retail on  - Page 2 Dal-710
Date Alive: Rinne Utopia (PS3)
The game that started it all! You play the role of a high school boy who has the ability to see spirits, girl-like entities who are living natural disasters who can potentially destroy the world. He also possesses the ability to seal their power by...dating them and making them fall in love?!
Yes it's a bizarre premise, but it works, and works well! It has some hilarious moments with some action and romance as well. It's a self-proclaimed gal-game and is certainly meant for adult males, though there certainly are some female fans of the series as well thanks in no small part to its clever writing and funny dialogue.
Topics tagged under retail on  - Page 2 Date-a11
The story is fairly short for a visual novel, however many branching paths make the game take easily 50-60 hours to reach the true ending which is totally worth it in our opinions. Also some super rare events can occur seemingly randomly due to complex flag algorithms which means to earn all story dialogue and CG's in the first Date Alive title to earn the coveted platinum trophy can take upwards of 100 hours to accomplish just in this particular third of the trilogy!
The audio-visual presentation is nothing short of amazing in this game. The art-style is beautiful with absolutely gorgeous character models, good special effects, and detailed world backdrops. The music is also top-notch and almost always fits the mood of the game at any given moment!
Topics tagged under retail on  - Page 2 Date-a10
Bottom-Line: With excellent gameplay and an equally good story, a decent amount of content, and an amazing audio-visual presentatio, Date Alive: Rinne Utopia is a superb game that many adult gamers would no doubt thoroughly enjoy and as such we give the game a great level of recommendation!
Review: Super Neptunia RPG (PS4 Retail)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Time for the NEP NEP Review of SUPER NEPTUNIA RPG!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Topics tagged under retail on  - Page 2 Ap_79510
 All righty then let’s have some fun with this, first things first, the art style backgrounds of this game are just beautiful; I truly like how everything looks. Now then on we go, Super Neptunia RPG is a side scroller platform type of game but the battles are still turn-based just a little different from the usual. Instead of the usual, those with high speed can attack faster.
This game battle system is set with a circle that fills up and as it does, you can attack depending on how many points of charge it has and how many points each attack does, I haven’t quite figured out what attack uses how many points other than the effect being larger like higher hit damage or higher healing. The story begins as usual in Neptunia game universe, some being going against the goddesses for whatever reason, usually hates them or think goddesses should no longer rule, but after Neptune and the gang lose they lose their memories and powers and wonder about in this new world were goddesses no longer exist.
Slowly they experience living in a 2d world and thanks to a woman named Chrom and Histoire reunite with one another learning of the true nature of this world with its 2d games and how anything of higher quality has been lost or its against the law of a group named Bombyx Morri, so the group has to regain their memories and their power in order to stop them.
Topics tagged under retail on  - Page 2 Ap_3f610
Now the battle system isn’t as simple as it sounds since all four characters share the same circle. It means not all of them can attack at once unless you charge enough points to make them all attack. Also, each character has only one attack depending on their position, once you get the other team members they can change positing mid-battle and depending on what position they are in, you press the button for the character you want to take action.
You learn the skill by buying gear and equipping it and learning their skills by gaining skill exp instead of the usual unlock skills by certain levels. There are attack skills, passive skills and skills that add status like regen or blocking certain type of attacks or elements. Also, you need to take into consideration your attacks as well, because if you attack an enemy that has absorb lightning, for example, your meter that charges goes into negative, making you wait even longer to be able to attack. Also, the enemies work the same way.
They have to charge their meter in order to attack, and also, while these fights are technically turn-based, they still run in real time, meaning that if you just leave the meter charging you’re going to get attacked only opening the menu stops the fights. There is also the break skill which is a bar that charges as you attack, it charges faster if you hit an enemy with a weakness.
Topics tagged under retail on  - Page 2 Ap_8bf10
Once you get the goddess power back you can transform like previous games and they have their own unique break skill when they transform as well. Also you should know that due to the meter charging slow these fights usually take very long but you don’t have to worry because the game offers the feature to press L2 to speed up the fight and depending how hard you press it’s how fast it goes, so if you only want to move the fight a bit faster you only have to slightly press the L2 button or if you in a hurry and just want to end the fight fast then press the whole L2 button to make it go really fast.
Right now there are some audio glitches with the game, which can also be caused by pressing L2, whenever a character attacks, they usually say something but if all enemies die and she’s not done, she will say victory line and then finish saying the line when she was attacking for example Neptune has an ice skill that at the end she says “ice cold”  so if I were to speed up fight it would go something like this “get some, (victory line) you can’t defeat a protagonist duh!, (attack line) ice cold!" so yea that can be a little annoying for some and at the moment it hasn’t been patched yet, same with when everyone levels up at the same time they talk together so you most likely won’t understand what they are saying. Sometimes the background music does glitch up but it’s rare it hasn’t occurred to me that much
Now something I find personally annoying it’s that the npcs in this game are extremely limited in what they have to say, as in you can talk to those who have a quest and they will repeat a little of what they want but most other npcs just say this “…” same with the ones you finish a quest once quest done all they say is “….”, which is weird because npcs have voice acting and they say hello or something of the sort but speech bubble just says “…” and it’s very unusual for an RPG game that has interactable npcs and they say literally nothing.
Something I don’t like is that once you pick up a quest while some do give you enough detail to know what to do, some do not, like where you can find said enemy or item. Same with the story. You get a reminder on top of the screen on what you need to do, but it’s very limited and if you were not paying attention to the story, you might get a little confused because unlike previous games where they give you like a quick summary of what you last did, this game doesn’t. Still, this game is super fun and as usual it’s got the making fun of other series or games thing, I won’t tell you which to not spoil it.
Topics tagged under retail on  - Page 2 Ap_0cd10
Something that might bother players and honestly it’s really minor, it’s that on occasion the game skips a frame which is strange for the type of game this is but it’s really not a big deal. Sometimes the victory screen kind of glitches out but its only recently starting to happen. I don’t know if it's because of the map, but it’s really minor. Also on some parts of the story, the screen stays black, but it’s not because the game froze it’s just that your suppose to press the x button like if it was continuing a dialogue, but since transition is black you can’t tell.
Labyrinthian Platforming At Its Finest!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Lapis_10

Developed by Nippon Ichi Software and published by NIS America, Lapis x Labyrinth is platformer with RPG elements, great aesthetics, and unique gameplay, but is it worth diving into? We think so and here's why:

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Switch10

The gameplay in Lapis x Labyrinth is absolutely bonkers, but in an ingenious and highly enjoyable way. There are tons of genres crammed into this title ranging anywhere from puzzle to platforming and even JRPG elements and the gameplay elements meld together seamlessly. The story is hilarious and fun as expected from a game developed by Nippon Ichi Software so expect to have an enjoyable romp!

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Lapis_11

There are a ton different enemies in the game and the bosses are creative and a blast to take down! The controls are intuitive and easy to learn and the game's difficulty is nicely balanced! There are tons of skills and a balanced leveling system that adds a JRPG feel to the game as well.

The audio-visual presentation is superb with gorgeous character and enemy models, gorgeous level designs, and a fantastic soundtrack it's hard to not love this game!

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Lapis_12

Bottom-Line: With great gameplay, intuitive controls, and a fantastic audio-visual presentation it's hard to not immediately be immersed in Lapis x Labyrinth's amazing world and there's no real negative aspects to the game! Overall we give the game a good to great level of recommendation!

Review: Neo Atlas 1469 (Switch Retail)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Discovery of The Year!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 20170219021406_1-noscale

Developed by Studio Artdink and published by NIS America, Neo Atlus 1469 is a simulation game that tasks you with exploring and mapping the entire world as well as creating trade routes with other nations and more in this thrilling strategy title, but is it worth checking out? We think so and here's why:

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 20170216052719_1-noscale

Neo Atlas 1469 is a remake of the 1999 classic, Neo Atlus II with an enhanced audio-visual presentation and a bit of extra story content, but is otherwise the same game. The gameplay is fairly straightforward, you must explore the vast and mostly unexplored world and create trade routes while trying to survive natural hazards such as storms, sea monsters, and tsunamis as well as pirates and vessels from enemy nations. This is not easy, but is thoroughly enjoyable despite being somewhat repetitive. The world is randomly generated as you explore it, but luckily if you don't like what generates during a voyage, you can retry to get a desired outcome which is a wonderfully useful feature!

The amount of micro-management in the game is pretty deep, but not to the point of being hardcore in this regard so it's a little more accessible for newcomers or players who aren't used to the genre, than say, Civilization 6 in this regard. The game's length is literally infinite, though once the world is fully explored it's actually much more fun to start a new game. In-terms of a single playthrough most players will probably take between 30 to 50 hours to fully explore the world, perhaps longer if the RNG isn't in your favor which is a reasonable length in our opinions!

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 20170221055315_1-noscale

The controls work amazingly well so there are no complaints from us there, and the audio-visual presentation is fantastic for a game that is over 20 years old, even if it's a remaster! The visuals are definitely better than the likes of Civilization II, and Sim City 2000 that were released in the same time-frame. The soundtrack is great albeit a bit repetitive as well, but it has aged gracefully!

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 420838-20170222074112_1

Bottom-Line: With great gameplay, excellent controls, and a fairly large amount of content, Neo Atlas 1469 for the switch is a superb strategy title that's deep, but not too deep and is accessible to newcomers of the genre! The audio-visual presentation is also superb for a game that was released 20 years ago. For these reasons and more, we give Neo Atlas 1469 for the Nintendo Switch a great level of recommendation!

Review: SNK 40th Anniversary Collection (PS4 Retail)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Classic Arcade Goodness Making A Splash On PS4 and Switch!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 900x19

Developed by Digital Eclipse and published by NIS America, SNK 40th Anniversary Collection is a compilation of excellent retro arcade games from SNK's rich catalogue of software and there's a large variety of genres to be had so there's something for everyone in this collection of games. Is it worth its price though? We think so and here's why:

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 900x20

This collection of games is pretty impressive with fantastic emulation and amazing bonus content. You can choose the region of most games and some games you can even choose between a home console version and the original arcade version which is a nice touch. The games span several different genres so there is something for gamers of different tastes, however scrolling shmup's do dominate the lineup somewhat.

The games run as they should with little to no issues. The games also have a sharp image mode and even a full-screen mode and stretch mode if you want the original aspect ratio or don't like borders or arcade cabinet images on your TV screen while playing respectively. The gameplay options are somewhat limited, but are serviceable.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 900x21

A cool feature of this compilation is that you can activate "watch mode" at the start to watch how the courses should be played and can jump in at any time which can help if you get stuck on a particular part of one of the games or to help you boost your scores by knowing how to do certain things in a particular way.

Back to the bonus content there's a plethora of cool info regarding  the included games in Museum Mode and tons of other juicy tidbits of awesomeness that you likely wouldn't expect to be included which is great for any arcade aficionado's!

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 900x22

The controls are pretty responsive and work as they are intended to which is nice as well. The audio-visual presentation is what it is and is more or less perfectly rendered from the source material. Sure there's a very rare visual or audio blip every now and then, but you'll likely not even notice these while playing and some of the games hold up quite well visually given their age. The soundtracks of many of the games range from good to great, but a few of the older titles do have rather limited chiptunes and can be somewhat grating, but overall it's a non-issue.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 900x23

Bottom-Line: With a great selection of arcade game classics with tons of bonus content in the museum, excellent controls, and  near-perfect emulation including the audio-visual side of things, SNK 40th Anniversary Collection for the PS4 is a good title that is well worth purchasing if you're a fan of arcade gameplay and grew up with older games. On the downside these games are bite-sized compared to modern games and are mostly good for short-bursts of challenging fun. Overall we give the game a good level of recommendation!

Review: Jump Force (PS4 Retail)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
J-Force Assemble!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Jumpfo11

Developed by Spike Chunsoft and published by Bandai Namco, Jump Force is likely the biggest, most ambitious anime game the gaming community will see this year. So will it satisfy player’s anime fighting needs?

Game Modes:

Tutorial Missions: Tutorial mode is an extension of the mandatory tutorial and teaches the player more of the basics of combat in the game.

Story: Jump Force’s story starts off slow which makes it seem lackluster and impersonal at first. It starts with way too many story missions, the majority of which feel more like side missions. After completing the first few chapters, the story does start to improve and increase interest. There aren’t as many missions that don’t feel related to the story, and it picks up its pace which makes it more engaging than before. Finishing the story feels like completing an anime, it is very satisfying, but it feels like there should be more. One thing to note is that it occasionally a character might seem out of character in story mode which can make that part of the story feel off. Another important thing to note is that to play and progress in the story; the player must either go to the mission counters and chose Key Missions or talk to the correct character to progress. It can get a little confusing trying to figure out where to go at times but remembering the minimap is key.

Free Missions: This mode is definitely a good one to grind. In this mode, the player can obtain experience, money, upgrade materials, cosmetic items, abilities, and J-Skills. These missions are not that hard to complete and range in difficulty from Easy to Expert. To get the most out of this mode, the player would want to get S-rank on each mission which does take some time.

Extra Missions: In this mode, the player completes missions which increase their level cap and obtain elements to apply to some abilities allowing the player to fine-tune their play style even more.

Online: In online mode, the player can fight other players online. There is the option to play quick matches, ranked matches, or friend matches. These modes are well implemented, but it would have been nice to have a rematch option in the friend matches, so friends don’t have to go through a ridiculous number of loading screens each time they do a match.

Offline: In offline mode, the player can choose to fight a couch-side friend, a CPU, have two CPUs fight each-other, or train. This mode probably doesn’t get as much credit as it deserves, but it certainly isn’t as prominent as the other modes.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Jumpfo10

Customization:
In the game, there are multiple options for customization which are mostly broken down into avatar creation, customization items, and abilities.

Avatar Creation: In avatar creation, the player can create their avatar. They chose which type of fighting style (Martial Arts, Pirate, or Ninja) and customize their avatar’s appearance. The avatar creation is very good and allows players to create incredibly unique avatars or recreate a character from the animes in the game. Some of the options such as hair and the two features can be changed in-game, but everything else is not, so create wisely.

Customization Items: Customization Items are the clothing and accessories the avatars wear. They can be obtained via the in-game shop or through Free Missions. The options for this seem a little limited currently in terms of styles and colors, but the developers are releasing more options in future patches.

Abilities: Abilities are the moves the player’s avatar uses from the pool of in-game playable characters’ moves. Choosing moves allows for some whacky combinations or utter destruction. Abilities can be swapped out at any time, and the player can obtain new moves either through the in-game store or playing Free Missions. Some abilities are also eligible for element changes which were mentioned a little earlier. Abilities are a very important part of avatar customization as it decides the players play style.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Jumpfo12

Technical Bits:

Controls: The controls are very different from other Bandai fighting games, but are very easy to get used to and help create a very smooth fighting experience.

Visuals: The visuals in Jump Force are one of the things that had the biggest interest factor for the game. Luckily the visuals live up to what was seen in the trailers and continue to be amazing with few flaws. The main flaw left by having such great graphics is that the faces of some of the anime characters wind up looking like their face was pasted onto their model, but luckily that flaw does not apply to most of the characters. Apart from that, the graphics for the game are amazing compared to other Bandai fighting games. The special effects, maps, and avatar details are awesome.

Audio: Chunsoft chose to go with an epic style for their music which sounds good and helps round out the theme of the game, and the sound effects are good. The voice acting is very good, but it only comes in Japanese audio with English subtitles which could cause an issue for some players.

Completion: Full completion of Jump Force will likely take at least 70 hours likely more to do all the missions and experience multiplayer. It is also the kind of game where the multiplayer is something to come back to for an extended length of time.

DLC: There are confirmed DLC characters as of right now and a Character Pass which grants players nine DLC characters and access to those characters four days before they are available for purchase. There are only nine DLC character spots confirmed at this point, but there is the possibility that they could increase the number later on.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Jumpfo14

Conclusion: Jump Force will satisfy a player’s anime fighting needs at least until their next game comes out if not beyond that. It has a few rough spots but all in all, it is a solid game.

Review: The Princess Guide (PS4 Retail)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Guiding Lighthearted Adventure To Enjoy!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 900x15

Developed by Nippon Ichi Software and published by NIS America, The Princess Guide is a strategic beat 'em up with RPG elements and is similar to Penny Punching Princess in many ways, but very different in others. How does this game stack-up in comparison to Penny Punching Princess? Continue reading our review to find out the answer!

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 900x16

First off the story in the game, while somewhat basic is quite charming and sets the mood for the mostly enjoyable adventure. The characters are charming and lovable, the plot in borderline genius at times with clever plot-twists in a few of the four character's stories. Overall in this aspect the game is absolutely amazing.

The gameplay is good too, however several issues do hold the game back, which we'll explain a bit later on, but first let's talk about the positives! The zany beat 'em up formula from Penny Punching Princess is mostly intact here, but is more refined with a Full-fledged skill and stat building system for your princesses. With four princesses and four stories between them the game is quite substantially longer than Penny Punching Princess which is great as we felt that the aforementioned game was a tad on the short side.

The mechanics and enemies attack patterns also add almost a bit of a shoot 'em up feel to the game unlike the mostly hand-to-hand combat in PPP. There are even heavy tactical RPG elements thrown into the mix, further adding to the game's depth especially in the overworld area. Another HUGE difference between the two games is the added depth in the character building aspect of the game where you can really power-up your princesses. The main character "you" a.k.a. The Guide is able to be customized with whatever gender you want, and your choice  between different voices, character portraits, and name. Overall this does add a nice personal touch to the game and is much appreciated!

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 900x17

The downsides are basically bugs or technical issues. While rare, it is possible to accomplish every goal during a stage and still lose thanks to a rather unfortunate bug. There are a handful of visual bugs as well as semi-frequent crashes that we also encountered which hurts the game's overall score. Essentially without these bugs the game would have received a near-perfect score.

The controls in the game are intuitive and easy to learn yet can take a few days to fully master. The audio-visual presentation is vibrant and cheerful while absolutely ludicrous in some ways "We're looking at you boob jiggle". Otherwise it's quite good with excellent visual novel style storytelling with gorgeous character designs and backgrounds and a superb soundtrack. The character's voice acting did get on our nerves a bit however which is unfortunate, but only a minor gripe.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 900x18

Bottom-Line: With an amazing story, good, but flawed gameplay, a mostly great audio-visual presentation, and solid controls, The Princess Guide is a great game in many ways and is well worth diving into, however some technical issues hold the game back quite a bit and as such we give The Princess Guide for the PS4 a solid level of recommendation.

Review: Caligula Effect Overdose (PS4 Retail)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Digiheads Ahoy!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Overdo11

Developed by Aquria and published by NIS America, Caligula Effect: Overdose is a unique JRPG with some pretty interesting concepts, but is this enough to make the game shine? We think so and here's why.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Overdo12

The story in Caligula Effect Overdose is pretty good sci-fi stuff and has an extremely dark tone oftentimes. What caught us off guard were the sheer amount of drastically different directions the story can take depending on your decisions. It's on par with visual novels in this regard which is an oddity amongst JRPG's, but a very welcome one at that.

The gameplay might seem like standard JRPG fare at first, but there is so much depth if you're willing to explore the game's features and learn how to battle utilizing the game's very complex systems. There are a ton of different elements such as using social media and taking quests for students that can help weave the story in Caligula Effect: Overdose. Perhaps the biggest change in the new Overdose version is the inclusion of the-similar-yet-different storyline in the perspective of a female student, while the differences aren't huge there are some varying storyline branches between the male and female student paths.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Overdo13

Speaking of the battles they are turn-based in this game, but utilize a unique rock-paper-scissors approach with the skill system, but it's actually deeper then that as your position and the position of the enemies on the battlefield can drastically affect the effectiveness of your skills and the same is true of your enemies who're usually pretty dumb digiheads who don't have a lick of strategy to their attacks or even spam the same action endlessly. These cannon-fodder are usually a breeze to take out, but the named bosses that retain their intelligence can be extremely difficult and require a sound strategy to defeat.

The game is reasonably long and can take 50 hours to beat and the controls are pretty straightforward and easy to learn. The audio-visual presentation is decent as well. The standard graphics outside of the animated cutscenes aren't all that impressive, but they get the job done. The several anime cutscenes in the game are gorgeous however. The soundtrack is quite good, however the lack of English voice acting is quite disappointing. Overall the audio-visual is decent to solid quality.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 110

Bottom-Line: With deep and enjoyable gameplay, an excellent branching story, superb controls, and a decent audio-visual presentation, Caligula Effect: Overdose is a good game through-and-through, however the lack of english voice acting was a bit of a letdown. We do recommend this game to older audiences who are fans of the JRPG genre! We give Caligula Effect: Overdose a solid to good level of recommendation!

Review: Kingdom Hearts III (PS4 Retail)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The End of An Era!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Full10

Developed by Square Enix and published By Disney Interactive and Square Enix, Kingdom Hearts III is the final game in Sora's arc in the series, so does the conclusion go out with a bang? We think so, but not for all of the right reasons. Continue reading to find out why we think the game is a good, but flawed ending the epic trilogy.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Full11

The story in Kingdom Hearts III is decent although some things pan out differently than they really should have based on previous games, such as Organization XIII members who instead of provoking Sora and the gang into fighting them, they instead just provoke the gang and then run away.

The Disney themed stories are quite enjoyable as expected and the inclusion of Pixar worlds and characters is amazing, however Kingdom Hearts III mentions the Final Fantasy characters one time in the game and you never actually see any of them which is a seriously bone-headed move in our opinions as the Final Fantasy characters actually had more important roles than the lion's share of the Disney characters in previous games in the series.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Full12

Things actually get worse in the last 10-15 hours of the game as the story shifts focus to the Kingdom Hearts exclusive characters and everything feels like a rushed hot-mess that should have been 30-40 hours worth of story condensed into roughly a third of that time. It really hurts the game's storytelling, however worst of all the ending itself was unnecessary in our opinions and we'll leave it at that as to not spoil anything for you, our loyal viewers. All we can say is that the ending will catch you completely off-guard.

The gameplay is top-notch as expected from a game in the Kingdom Hearts series. The game's famous action-packed combat is back and tweaked to perfection! The battles feel like a combination of the best aspects of the first two main Kingdom Hearts games, plus a few new features such as attraction commands have been added allowing you to summon Disney theme park attractions to deal a tremendous amount of damage to enemies and bosses and in some cases while a gorgeous spectacle, it makes boss battles far too easy to win.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Full13

The minigames are kind of disappointing this time around which is rather unfortunate. The Gummi Ship battles are very disappointing as well and can be ridiculously difficult and time-consuming at times to the point of taking a good third of the game's actual length. The controls are pretty easy to learn which is always nice.

The audio-visual presentation is absolutely breathtaking in Kingdom Hearts III, with gorgeous worlds brimming with detail and absolutely gorgeous characters and top-notch special effects. This game is clearly Triple-A through and through, and the soundtrack is amazing as well.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Full14

Bottom-Line: With superb gameplay, an amazing audio-visual presentation, and good controls Kingdom Hearts III is a good game that is worth getting if you are a fan of the series or Action-RPG's in general, however a rushed story and terrible ending ruin the experience and the game's somewhat short length doesn't help matters. Overall we do give Kingdom Hearts III for the PS4 a good level of recommendation.

Review: Death End Re;Quest (PS4 Retail)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Deep Dive Into Insanity!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Dxji_a10

Developed by Galapagos RPG and published by Idea Factory, Death End Re;Quest for the PS4 is not only one of the best games released by Idea Factory thus-far, it is also one of the darkest, possibly even eclipsing Mary Skelter in that regard. Continue reading our review to find out more about why we have such high praise for this game!

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 34106610

The story in Death End Re;Quest is one of pure terror as the protagonist Shina, a developer of a VRMMO is trapped inside her own game  which is bugged and damaged beyond all recognition for more than a year and initially has lost all of her memories. The bugs in the game are able to not only glitch and drive the lifelike NPC's to insanity, but are also somehow effecting Shina in the same way. Luckily some of her colleagues figure out she's alive and mount a rescue attempt, however before long bizarre things begin to happen to them as well in the real world. Be prepared for tons of horrific scenes and terrifying narrative that is highly recommended to be played where no minors are around.

The gameplay while mostly similar to other Idea Factory games such as the Neptunia series has a ton of unique nuances that really make the game feel unique, such as altering the genre of the game, activating cheats, and investigating the secrets of Shina's disappearance in the real world. The corruption system is also interesting as you can go into glitch mode once corruption reaches a certain percentage and grants you access to new skills as well as boosting your powers. Oh and the character transforms and in this state has next to no clothing for some odd reason.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 34106611

The game is somewhat lengthy clocking in at nearly 60 hours and the controls are quite intuitive and easy to learn despite the complex gameplay mechanics. As for the audio-visual presentation, it is exceptionally good despite clearly being a somewhat lower budget game. The character models are superb, as are the dungeons, visual novel style cutscenes, and even the battlegrounds during battles. The only area where the game struggles a bit is with the special effects which aren't bad mind you, just somewhat limited. Regardless the visual presentation is great.

The audio presentation is even better with an amazing soundtrack that fits the game like a glove and superb english voice acting or the equally good Japanese voice acting if you prefer! Overall the audio-visual presentation is nearly perfect as is the game as a whole!

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Aa612f10

Bottom-Line: With a superbly dark story, excellent and unique gameplay, flawless controls, and a nearly perfect audio-visual presentation, Death End Re;Quest for the PS4 is a top-notch JRPG that is worth every penny, however it must be stressed that this game is only meant for mature audiences. That said we give the game a perfect level of recommendation!

Review: Song of Memories (PS4 Retail)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Melodic Love Story Making A Splash!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 75257010

Developed by Pure Wish and published by PQube, Song of memories is an Romantic apocalyptic visual novel with light RPG elements that left a lasting impression, but is that enough to make it stand out amongst the dozens of other visual novels that are available on the PS4? We think so and here's why:

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Maxres10

Song of Memories starts out as a typical and somewhat pervy visual novel for the first few chapters with some awkward adopted sister moments, and the stereotypical harem storyline, however you'll suddenly find a tablet with AI girls with super powers and will face-off against monsters in a rhythm/RPG hybrid battle system which all comes together excellently!

The story is quite lengthy, clocking in at over 50 hours in length and as odd as this is to say in a "visual novel" it can be rather tough at times during battles, that said it didn't prevent us from finishing the game!

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 75257012

The audio-visual presentation in Song of Memories is absolutely superb with excellent character models, enemy designs, and animated backgrounds. The special effects during battles can be mesmerizing at times, though it can be somewhat distracting. Also the over-the-top boob physics can be quite erm...funny, yet can detract from the otherwise perfect visual presentation at times. The soundtrack and voice acting are also flawless, though as always we do wish there was at least an option for English voice overs.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 75257010

Bottom-Line: With an excellent story with unique gameplay and an amazing audio-visual presentation, Song of Memories will provide adults with many hours of enjoyment. It is a shame that the Nintendo Switch version of the game was cancelled, but if you are an adult and own a PS4 or Vita, we recommend giving the game a chance! As for our opinions, we give Song of Memories for the PS4 and Vita a good level of recommendation!

Review: Pokemon ~ Let's Go Eevee Edition (Switch Retail)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Let's Go Pokefun!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 900x

Hi there gamers, Bre here with another review for another great game from our friends at Nintendo! This time around I will be reviewing “Let’s Go Eevee” for the Nintendo Switch. Let’s Go Eevee is a fun game that takes the classic tales from three of our beloved past Pokémon games, “Pokémon: Blue, Red, and Yellow” and combines them into one game full of new twists, characters, and more.

Let’s Go Eevee takes you on the journey to becoming a Pokémon master by traveling roads to several towns and battling in gyms that feature in eight different types of Pokémon forcing you to master all different types of Pokémon and learn the ins and outs of the Pokémon world. The game comes with an awesome story mode that makes you work for what you want but keeps a mystery about while playing through the story piece by piece. The last bit of fun this game offers is in the fact that you can trade for alternate forms of certain Pokemon. Overall, I love this game, and cannot wait to explore the rest of the story from within, as my process continues I’ll post updates.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 900x

Pros of this game:
- Allows for co-op with friends
- - awesome storyline
- Features many lovable characters from the past games
- Brings a bit of the past with the new
- Poke ball plus lets you bring your game from GO to Let’s Go
- new fun alolan forms of your favorite Pokemons

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Poke-ball-plus.jpg.optimal

Now that we have talked about the positives of the game let’s get down to the down side cause as we all know with the good always comes some bad sadly. One downside to this game is it tends to fall a bit shorter than the older games, and some people say that the throwing technique makes it too easy.

While I think the throwing, technique is great I can see where this makes the game a bit less fun, and why the older trainers may like the classic form back. The other downside is that if you walk your Pokémon in your poke ball plus too long it can overpower the game taking some of the fun/challenge out people are saying. While these may not seem like major concerns these are things that the classic Pokémon gamers have brought up.

Cons to this game:
- Overpowering by Poke ball Plus
- Throwing technique makes catching too easy
- Co-op can only be done via local mode

Bottom-Line: this game is very fun to me, and I love that it combines Pokémon Go with Let’s Go, and that I can replay through parts of the classic games as I did miss the first in the series sadly. I do believe this game was a great way to connect the two Pokémon versions, and I give it a good level of recommendation!

Score: ★★★★★★★★☆☆ 8/10

Lying Has Never Been So Fun!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Topics tagged under retail on  - Page 2 900x10
Developed by Nippon Ichi Software and published by NIS America, The Liar Princess And The Blind Prince is a heartfelt tale about a wolf with a beautiful voice and a prince who is accidentally blinded by the wolf and their journey to restore his eyesight! Continue reading our review to find out why we highly recommend the game to all PS4 and Switch owners!
Topics tagged under retail on  - Page 2 900x11
The story is most certainly the strong point of the game and is absolutely amazing! The storybook style storytelling is gorgeous, will the script is touching and at times, enchanting! The downside is the game is quite short so you'll likely wish there was more content, but what is there in-terms of story is nearly flawless!
The gameplay is the weak-point, but is still solid. Basically it's a puzzle-based platformer and its mechanics are excellent, though there isn't a whole lot of variety between the various stages which holds the game back from getting a perfect score. The game can easily be beaten in a few hours and there are a couple of different endings which adds a bit of replay value to the game.
Topics tagged under retail on  - Page 2 900x13
The controls in the game are pretty easy to learn and are quite simple to master to be quite honest, and while the platforming aspects are for the most part exceptionally easy, the puzzle elements can be quite sadistic at times so expect some mind-bending puzzles that might leave you scratching your head for a spell or two.
The audio-visual presentation is nothing short of amazing, whether it's the storybook cutscenes, the gorgeous artistic backgrounds in the stages, the superbly detailed characters and enemies, or the amazing soundtrack, it's top-tier stuff and is nearly perfect!
Topics tagged under retail on  - Page 2 900x14
Bottom-Line: With an amazing story, solid gameplay, excellent controls, and a nearly flawless audio-visual presentation, The Liar Princess and The Blind Prince is a great game that is worth looking into if you're an owner of a PS4 or Nintendo Switch the only downside is that the game is quite short. Anyways we give The Liar Princess and The Blind Prince a good to great level of recommendation!
Score: ★★★★★★★★½☆ 8.5/10
My Hero's Justice?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Wvam1012

Developed by Byking Inc. and published by Bandai Namco, My Hero Academia now has its own fighting game: My Hero One’s Justice. While this fresh anime has wooed fans, is the game up to par?

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Jxtw3011

Story:

In the Story Mode there are three chapters to the campaign. The first chapter of the three-part campaign is the Hero chapter. This section of the campaign takes you through the events from when the young heroes begin their internships to the fight between All Might and All for One. Which in reference to the anime is around the middle of season two to the middle of season three. Finishing the Hero chapter feels very rewarding and unlocks the villain chapter. Unfortunately, the villain chapter falls a bit flat.

It is practically the same thing as the hero chapter, so it just feels like a repeat with different characters. In addition to the lackluster feeling of repeating the main events they also seemed to throw in some unnecessary side missions which have nothing to do with the plot. After finishing the villain chapter, the last chapter of the campaign unlocks. This chapter covers the U.A Sports Festival, which happened before the events of both the previous chapters. It is nice that it was included, but it feels very out of place and seems like a last-minute decision. Overall the Story mode to My Hero One’s Justice started off strong but fell short towards the end.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Dnub2813

Mission Mode:

Mission Mode in My Hero One’s Justice is a great place to fine tune fighting skills and earn more accessories for customization. The missions start off easy, but progressively gets harder towards the later missions.

This mode is good for hone skills since it introduces fighting under extreme circumstances sometimes. Mission mode adds specific stipulations under which matches can be won. Some examples of these stipulations would be: win by ring-out (out of bounds), survive until time expires while health slowly degenerates, beat enemies while their health slowly regenerates, etc. These missions make mission mode challenging and rewarding upon completion.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Xzgu9712

Customization Modes:

In game there are two modes for customization: Customize Profile and Customize Character. In Customize Profile one can customize a card that will display player information while playing in online mode. This card customization consists of a background, a picture, a title, and a comment. All the customizations for this mode are available by playing, beating, or leveling specific characters. In Customize Character one can customize the outfits, introduction scenes, and voice sets. Most of the character’s outfits and accessories can be obtained by fulfilling conditions in story and mission modes, but a few of them must be purchased using in game currency earned by completing matches.

The customizations to the introductions include a special background, a customizable “mottos” and text color. Most of the mottos can be unlocked by fulfilling conditions or can simply be unlocked through purchase. The backgrounds and text colors are exclusively unlockable through purchase. There is also the option to change the sets of dialogue the characters use in matches.

There are voices for match introductions, attack voices, victory voices, and extended voice packs. All the voice packs besides the default ones must be purchased. There is the ability to create three costume presets in Customize Character mode which allows for the player to save three different outfit, accessory, voice sets, and introduction customizations to be used in Mission, Local, and Online modes. All in all, the game has a very expansive customization system that lets the players express themselves.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Jxtw3011

The Technical Bits:

Controls: The controls for this game are very easy to learn on PlayStation 4 as they are relatively similar to other fighting games.

Visuals: The visuals for this game are standard for Bandai brand fighting games. They are not anything particularly new or more detailed, but still satisfying to see.

Audio: The audio for the game is satisfying. The music in the menus is very peppy but not in your face. In the matches the music is more intense and helps set the mood while fighting. In the end the music fits the game very well. The dialogue for the game is in Japanese and is very nice to listen to since it is the same voice actors from the anime, but the only problem is that there are no subtitles. Due to this someone who does not know Japanese will likely be unable to know what the characters are saying.

Completion: To 100% this game with fulfilling all the special conditions in story and mission modes could take an average of 50 hours give or take. This does not include all the customization unlocks and trophies (for the PlayStation 4 version) since there are so many customizations unlocks which also feed into the trophies.

A word on Multiplayer: In this game the Online Mode works completely fine most of the time. There are some instances where the matchmaking will time-out and force the player to re-que, but there is also another error that is a bit more frustrating. Less common than the previous error is when loading into a pre-match screen the screen will just stay a dark red with nothing on it to indicate it is loading. The screen can stay that way for an indefinite amount of time. The easiest way to fix this is to restart the game. Waiting the screen out is doable sometimes, but likely not worth the wait.

DLC: There are DLCs for My Hero One’s Justice to unlock extra characters and missions for extra customizations. They are not necessary to enjoy the game and thus are completely optional.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Img_0310

Bottom-Line: My Hero One’s Justice is a decent anime fighting game. For fans the game is enjoyable despite the shortcomings of the story. However, for people who have not watched the anime or read the manga it would likely be lackluster. We give the game a decent level of recommendation.

Review: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Switch Retail)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Smashing Fun!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The long-anticipated wait for the game everyone’s been talking about is finally over! Super Smash Brothers Ultimate is finally here, and we got all the fun tidbits for you, along with the down sides to the game. I remember back when Super Smash Brothers Ultimate was first officially announced the whole Nintendo fan was so pumped for this game! As time grew closer, and we all waited in anticipation for the game to be out, little snippets began coming out giving us glimpses and previews into the game without spoiling the game itself. Fast forward some, and now we’re here the game in hands and time to play.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 900x

The day this game came out I went out personally after work and picked the game up at my local store. I couldn’t wait to get home and play the story mode/battle my boyfriend in the game. Now I love playing this game, and the upsides include a wide variety of characters from all our favorite game worlds such as: Super Mario Brothers, Fire Emblem, Kirby, and more! Then came the announcement of new characters from the newest games that had taken over our hearts from Nintendo such as: Inklings from Splatoon!

Then there’s the return of some of our favorite classic fighters from past Smash games such as: Ice Climbers, Fox, and many more! The roster for this game is pure amazing and brings in a few new lovable characters even such as: Isabelle from Animal Crossing, Piranha Plant from Super Mario, and shadow fighters such as Daisy or Dark Pit! This game has a fighter for every Nintendo fan’s choosing, and with five more to come the excitement is building up even more!

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 900x

The next positive to this game that I want to bring up is the selection of stages and music have become even larger! We even received some new stages including the beloved “Moray Towers” from Splatoon bringing more lands to wreak havoc on with your friends while slapping each other around for the sake of a good time! In fact, there are over 100 stages to select from taking you to countries and lands both near and far in this game!

Now for the main positive to this game the amazing story mode that comes within the game called “World of Light.” You start out as Kirby being the only character to not be wiped out when the land gets taken over by master hand, and his army of evil hands. From here you must explore the towns/areas around you to defeat the evil shadow forms of your friends that have overtaken their bodies and beat them to bring your friends back to the light. As you travel through your battle you encounter your friends some being the main characters, and others side characters called “spirits” that can enable special abilities that can will help you along your journey to bring all your friends back, and defeat whatever master hand’s evil plan may be before he can put the plan into action fully! It’s up to you and Kirby to bring back the light to the “World of Light!”

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 900x

This game seems to have it all from amazing characters, amazing stages, an amazing storyline and music, to the amazing graphics to go along with all of this! Though there are some downsides to any game and one major one that I’ve found comes when you are playing multiplayer! Once in online mode you can choose to smash or spectacle, if you choose to smash you then can choose quickplay or arena’s, in quick play you can choose to go solo or do co-op with a local friend which is great and ensures to bring a good time to any party!

The downside comes if you choose arena mode, in which you can either join a friend’s arena or make your own for the fun! Once you are inside the arena you choose your character and set up, but you can only play one player inside arena there is no option for local or online co-op in arena mode. This is a downfall as if you have two people together and then want to play with online friends you must take turns battling because there is no other option right now. Will this be fixed in the future? It’s hard to say, but I know that I sure hope so.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 900x

Wrapping this all up here are the key notes for this game:

Pros:

Wide roster of characters and stages, wide selection of music, great graphics, and makes fun for most parties!

Cons:

Multiplayer is limited to quickplay for now, and controls can be a bit tricky compared to past games

Some things we did not touch on but may be cool to know:

- Spirits can be used in multiplayer if wanted
- There is an amazing story mode
- Five new fighters are still to come but must be paid for via DLC and only one has been officially announced so far!

Review: Labyrinth of Refrain ~ Coven of Dusk (PS4 Retail)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bewitching Tides?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 900x

Developed by Nippon Ichi Software and published by NiSA, Labyrinth of Refrain: Coven of Dusk is a dungeon crawling RPG that has a bewitching theme, no really! Is this unique witch theme enough to entrance you into loving the game? Probably not, but it has other things going for it, though even still it's only enough to make the game a decently enjoyable experience and here's why:

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 900x

The story in Labyrinth of Refrain is pretty unique which is both good and bad. In-terms of storytelling the game falls flat, but the dialog is hilarious at times and there are serveral unexpected plot-twists that will catch you completely off guard which is the sign of good story progression, but some of the voice overs are just barely passable and some of the lines are cheesy as heck which does hurt the game's overall score.

The gameplay in LoR:CoD is pretty enjoyable with a few unique quirks, but overall the developers played it safe and as a result the gameplay is average at best. The few unique elements are enjoyable at least including the ability to pay the leader of the caravan a certain amount of mana to get her to pass decrees that boost stats and or add new gameplay elements to the game among other bonuses. Then the puppetry aspect where your puppets a.k.a. party members can lose limbs which affect their stats and other unique attributes really adds to the overall experience of the game!

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 900x

Then the dungeon itself is quite impressive and has many traps and other dangers that require you to tread new floors carefully or risk being wiped out. The battles are standard fare, though the enemies are quite unique and have a wide array of attacks and skills that will test any would-be adventurers skills!

The game is quite difficult so expect to be thoroughly challenged. The game is very long as well clocking in at over 50 hours in length so don't expect to beat this during a weekend binge! The controls are also quite intuitive and easy to learn which is always a good thing in our opinions!

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 900x

The audio-visual presentation in Labyrinth of Refrain: Coven of Dusk is above average with excellent dungeon designs both in sensibility and visually, the music is also terrific, the only thing that is somewhat of a letdown are a couple of the voice actors, but overall the audio-visual presentation is good to great!

Bottom-Line: With solid albeit uninspiring gameplay, superb story, excellent audio-visual presentation, and top-notch controls, Labyrinth of Refrain: Coven of Dusk can be fun at times, but the developer played things far too safe and as a result the gameplay feels far too similar to other games in the genre. Overall we give the game a decent to solid level of recommendation.

Review: Valthirian Arc (PS4 Retail)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
School of Heroic Fun!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 ValthirianArc-00

Developed by Agate Studio and published by PQube, Valthirian Arc is a surprisingly deep school simulation title with RPG elements that has alot of unique gameplay elements, but is that all there is to this game? Hardly, Valthirian Arc is a blast to play and is well worth a purchase and here's why!

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Valthirian-Arc-Hero-School-Story-3

The story in Valthirian Arc is quite good and entertaining, while the gameplay has a fantastic mixture of simulation and RPG elements. Those looking for a deep JRPG need to look elsewhere, but what we have here is quite an enjoyable experience. You basically must build your school up and train heroes using the school's facilities while meeting the quota of graduates which means that you will have to do some micro-management to avoid graduating all of your best heroes-in-training leaving you unable to complete more challenging missions.

The missions themselves are where the RPG elements come in as you'll be able to battle enemies in small fields and dungeon in rather simplistic action-RPG fashion. Overall the RPG elements while fun are absolutely overshadowed by the simulation elements. This is why the game will likely be more enjoyable to those who like simulation titles.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Valthirian-Arc-Hero-School-Story-4

The game also features item creation which is somewhat simplistic, but a nice feature nonetheless. The game is pretty accessible and shouldn't be too difficult for newbies to simulation games, while still being deep enough for fans of the genre. The controls are also quite intuitive and easy to learn which is always a good thing!

The visuals in the game are colorful a cheery, but don't expect to be blown away by them as the game is very outdated in that regard, but gets the job done. The soundtrack on the other hand is fantastic albeit somewhat repetitive, regardless it is pretty good stuff and earns our seal of approval! Overall the audio-visual presentation is good in our opinions!

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Valthirian-Arc-Hero-School-Story-5

Bottom-Line:

With a great story and unique yet enjoyable gameplay, excellent controls, and a good audio-visual presentation, Valthirian Arc is a worthwhile PS4 game that fans of simulation games and RPG's should enjoy, overall we give Valthirian Arc for the PS4 a good level of recommendation!

Review: Tales of Graces F (PS3 Retail)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
F = Fantastic!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Graces2

Developed and published by Bandai Namco, Tales of Graces F is most definitely the best Tales of title since Tales of Symphonia and even exceeds it in many aspects! Continue reading the rest of our review to find out just why we hold this game in such high regard!

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Graces5

Tales of Graces "F" uture's story is among the best we've seen in ages from a JRPG, it's a tale of growing up and learning from one's past. The main game is separated into three different story arcs, Childhood Arc, Adult Arc, and Future Arc and in-total the game is about 60-70 hours long if you power through it, but if you want to get everything in the game, expect to sink 200-300 hours into the game! The story is a touching and heartfelt one, albeit exceptionally dark. Despite this the game's characters often do a great job at throwing in humor whenever things start getting too dark. This constant roller-coaster between seriousness and silliness is one of Tales of Graces F's greatest strengths!

The gameplay is crazy good with a unique battle system. Basically the battles are in real-time just as in other Tales of titles and you can freely move and attack enemies, but things are pretty different than in say Tales of Symphonia. First of all arts are separated into Assault Arts and Beta Arts, Assault Arts is basically a combo system reminiscent of beat 'em up's and fighters where attacking using different direction combinations will result in different combo attacks, some can be almost as good as Beta Arts, so learning combo's is key to mastering the game!

Another unique gameplay element is the revamped title system which allows you to learn arts, upgrade stats and arts, leart unique combat skills, and earn costumes by earning SP, if every time you earn enough SP you'll rank up your titles which each of the five ranks earns you a skill, buff, costume, etc. And once you reach rank 5 you can earn additional SP to master the title which boosts the effects of the title.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Graces3

The game has done away with Technique Points or TP which were basically Magic Points in exchange for a Combo Count system CC for short. Your arts and combo's use up CC and when you run out you can't attack until it recharges, but luckily this only takes a second or two tops. You can raise your CC by gaining levels, reaching certain ranks in certain titles, and by upgrading your weapons.

The game also possesses an item upgrade and creation system called dualization which has you combine items to create new ones or upgrade equipment by reforging them into stronger or completely new forms. The game also has some puzzle solving here and there which actually gets quite challenging especially in the Future Arc, but shouldn't be impossible to figure out on your own.

As always you can start a new game plus after completing the game, but unlike the typical grade store, you no longer earn Grade Points during battle, instead certain accomplishments earn you points, the best source of Grade Points is easily from mastering titles, each title you master earns you a small sum of Grade Points and with nearly 700 titles in-total you can rack-up a tremendous amount of points to give you an edge in the next playthrough, which you'll need if you ever want to beat the game in Evil difficulty mode.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Graces4

Lastly the game possesses a Trials of Graces mode which gives you some challenges to test your skills of the game, it's an interesting albeit forgettable mode, but can be fun. The controls in the game are easy to learn, but quite difficult to master so you'll need some practice to get skilled at playing this game!

As for the audio-visual presentation, Tales of Graces F looks incredible considering it was originally released as a Wii title in Japan, the world is lush and detailed, the characters are unique and look amazing, and the special effects can be breathtaking at times. The soundtrack is absolutely amazing and fits the mood of the game perfectly, while the voice acting is superb! Overall the audio-visual presentation is just as flawless as the rest of the game!

Bottom-Line:

With blissful gameplay, a top-notch story, excellent controlls, and a flawless audio-visual presentation, Tales of Graces F is by far the best game in the long-running Tales of series and will provide fans of the genre hundreds of hours of superb gameplay! We wholeheartedly recommend this game to any and all PS3 owners and award this game a perfect level of recommendation!

Review: Metal Max ~ Xeno (PS4 Retail)

Hits Like A Typhoon, But Never Reaches The Stratosphere.

Developed by Kadokawa Games and Published by NiS America, Metal Max Xeno is an action game that pits a platoon of tanks against a bunch of iconic and not so iconic mechanical monstrosities in a bizarre turn-based JRPG series. Is this a top-tier game? No, but it has its moments, do we recommend the game though? Continue reading our review to find out!

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 METAL+MAX+Xeno_20180710143656

Metal Max Xeno is a game in the long-running Metal Max series, but is only the second game in the franchise to see a western release. The first was "Metal Saga" which released in North America in 2005 on the PS2. The story is REALLY dark, the world is an absolute hell, and the few people left are being hunted down by a diabolical Artificial Intelligence. The characters are pretty messed up as you'd imagine, but some of them have pretty decent character growth during the game's story!

The gameplay is quite unique, with turn-based battles featuring fully customizable tanks. Think of it as a cross between Valkyria Chronicles, Car Battler Joe, and MS Saga? It's really hard to describe, but all comes together rather well. The game is pretty standard length for a JRPG, clocking in at around 50-60 hours, but the game is tough-as-nails so expect your first playthrough to be substantially longer. The game is also a complete grindfest for the first 15-20 hours, luckily it becomes much more enjoyable in the last two-thirds of the game.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 METAL+MAX+Xeno_20180710145016

The controls are somewhat cumbersome and takes a bit of time to get used to, but overall it's not bad. The audio-visual presentation is pretty average, though the voice acting is good, the music is rather uninspiring and the visuals are extremely drab with the exception of the characters which are detailed and look amazing. This is easily the game's biggest flaw, but overall the game is a solid and unique JRPG.

Bottom-Line:

With excellent yet unique gameplay, a decent story, and a ton of customization options, Metal Max Xeno for the PS4 is a refreshingly unique JRPG that can be great fun after the early game grinding. The audio-visual presentation does hold the game back quite a bit, but overall we give Metal Max Xeno a solid level of recommendation!

Review: Punchline (PS4 Retail)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Splash of Humor With Apocalyptic Consequences!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 900x

Developed by 5pb and published by PQube, Punchline is a visual novel like no other and is not only hilariously zany, but has a great cast of lovable characters. Is this enough to give the game a fantastic score? We think so and here's why:

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 900x

The story in Punchline is so bizarre, but in a good way. Basically the protagonist gains super powers by looking at girl's panties and tries to save the day during a terrorist attack, but something happens and the bad guy steals his body leaving the protagonist as nothing more than a ghost. It is your job to regain your spirit and eventually your body by haunting a bunch of girls while avoiding panties because for some reason seeing panties twice in a row will cause the world to come to an end.

The characters are really cool and likable. You will notice alot of character development over the course of the game and by the end you'll love the entire cast of characters. The plot is also surprisingly good despite being silly as heck which is fantastic news!

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 900x

The gameplay is relatively straightforward, you must use your limited powers as a ghost to manipulate the environment around you, but at first you'll only be able to move or knock-down light items, however once you start gaining back more of your spirit you'll be able to bang on doors and  windows, and manipulate heavy objects as well as possess the girls you are trying to interact with. Beware however as some actions will have dire consequences. The game is also not kid-friendly so make sure to not play the game where your youngsters might witness something you wouldn't want them to see.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 900x

The controls are flawless, but since the game is a visual novel it wouldn't bode well if its controls were cumbersome. The game is fairly lengthy and can take 25-30 hours to beat and 200+ hours to see everything the game has to offer.

The audio-visual presentation is a mixed bag as the animated cut-scenes are gorgeous and the soundtrack is superb, but the voice acting is only passable, while the in-game visuals such as character models look very dated.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 900x

Bottom-Line:

With great gameplay, a goofy yet highly enjoyable story, excellent controls, and great animation, Punchline is an excellent visual novel that can be highly enjoyable at times Punchline is well worth picking up if you're a fan of the genre. Dated visuals and dull voice acting drag the game down a bit, however the soundtrack makes up for that. Overall we give Punchline a good to great level of recommendation!

Review: SNK Heroines ~ Tag Team Frenzy (PS4 Retail)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Scantily Clad Girls Everywhere!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 900x

Developed by SNK and published by NIS America, SNK Heroines is a fighting game for people who for a lack of better words like a full cast of female characters in their fighting games. So you know there will be oversexualized characters, however once you get into the meat of the game it is excellent at least in-terms of its gameplay mechanics, but is this enough to earn a passing grade from us? Keep reading to find out!

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 900x

The story is mostly forgettable, but the characters are quite humorous and will constantly complain about things such as their bust size, or their outfits which is hilarious to be honest. The gameplay mechanics are actually quite accessible and easy to learn and the combo input is definitely fast-paced so expect battles to end rather swiftly rather than slow-paced technical fights.

Overall SNK Heroines feels like an old-school arcade fighter in every way which is nice for longtime fans of the genre. There are several modes, but nothing all that unusual for a fighting title

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 900x

The controls are intuitive and easy to learn which is always a must in a fighting game. The visuals are nice, sure they won't blow you away, but are definitely detailed and at times quite pretty. The music is also quite solid and fits the game perfectly.

Bottom-Line:

With great gameplay and controls, and solid audio-visual presentation the game had potential to be extremely good, but a forgettable story and ridiculous amount of fan-service held this game back from its potential, regardless the game is still a solid choice for fans of old-school arcade-fighters and as such we give SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy a solid level of recommendation!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Pervy Sages of The World Unite!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 900x

Developed by Inti Creates and published in Europe by PQube, Gal Gun 2 is a very provocative and VERY Japanese game at its core and requires a very specific set of tastes in games, in other words it's ϋber niche. That said there's definitely something alluring about this title, but is it worth purchasing? Continue reading our review to find out:

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 900x

The game has you fight a demon who's possessing schoolgirls with your mighty blowdryer that you obtain from a special app. This might sound weird and it IS weird, but the gameplay is quite amusing and enjoyable albeit definitely NOT for children or teenagers, I daresay if you have kids don't play this unless they're away or in bed and you're playing in your mancave. Seriously this game is that sexually inappropriate for young audiences.

That said the game's missions are quite shallow and don't possess much variety and the game itself is quite short as well. There's not much to do once you finish the game either which really hurts the game's replayability.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 900x

Visually the game is an improvement over the first game, but the world is still rather sparse and lifeless and the characters are okay, but not all that good looking. The auidio-presentation is good, but a bit lacking in variety of BGM's in the soundtrack. Overall the audio-visual presentation is average in our opinions.

Bottom-Line:

With fun albeit lacking gameplay, a very niche story that is as crazy as they get, and an average audio-visual presentation, Gal Gun 2 can be fun at times, but we can't recommend paying full price for the game. Nonetheless if you're an adult gamer and find the game on a good sale for a good price it could be a worthwhile purchase. Overall we give Gal Gun 2 a decent level of recommendation.

Review: Touhou Genso Wanderer Reloaded (PS4 Retail)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wandering Lady In A Strange Land.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 900x

Developed by Aqua Style and published by NIS America, Touhou Genso Wanderer: Reloaded is a roguelike mystery dungeon game with a very Eastern theme and it is among the strangest games we've played, but we enjoyed every minute of it! The only problem is the game's price. Continue reading our review to learn more:

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 900x

The gameplay in Touhou Genso Wanderer: Reloaded for PS4 is more or less pretty typical Mystery Dungeon stuff, but it's done quite nicely with very few of the traps or shortcomings of the genre. The problem is, that it never tries to do anything new and as a result feels like a solid, yet somewhat stale game in this regard. The controls are intuitive and easy to learn which is always a good thing in our opinions.

As for the battles, they are fast paced and easy to figure out, but mastering some of the nuances can take a few hours. The battle system is quite solid overall. The story and characters are extremely weird albeit in a very endearing way with bizarre plot-twist and excellently quirky characters!

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 900x

The game is breathtakingly beautiful visually with detailed characters and a colorful and lush world. The enemies are just as gorgeous, while the visual novel style storytelling and handful of CGI cut-scenes are superb. The soundtrack and Japanese voice acting are great though we'd have liked to see an option for English voice overs, but otherwise we thoroughly enjoyed the game's presentation!

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 900x

Bottom-Line:

With a solid gameplay and story, great controls, and a superb audio-visual presentation, Touhou Genso Wanderer: Reloaded is a solid game that worth checking out if you enjoy mystery dungeon titles, however the game does lack a bit in creative and unique gameplay and it's pretty expensive to boot. Overall, however we did enjoy the game and as such we give Touhou Genso Wanderer: Reloaded for the PS4 a solid level of recommendation.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Solid Yet Fruity Racer!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 900x

Developed by 3 Clouds.it and published by PQube, All-Stars Fruit Racing is an ambitiously fruity racer that does fill a gap in the PS4's library of games as there aren't many arcade kart racers on the console, but is it worth purchasing? We think so and here's why:

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 900x

All-Stars Fruit Racing takes a unique approach to the kart racing formula in many ways, but the game nails the core aspects of the genre perfectly with tight controls that are both responsive and easy to learn, good course design, challenging A.I., and of course a hearty power-up and item system.

What makes this game so unique is that each character has their own item sets that can be powered up or altered through the fruit mixture system. This system is actually quite hard to explain in any sort of detail without spoiling too much, however it is among the most enjoyable power-up system we've seen in an arcade racer!

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 900x

Visually the game is a real treat as the courses are vibrant and lush and feature a lot of intricate details, the character and object models as well as the special effects are quite impressive and the soundtrack is exceptional to boot, there's really nothing short of perfection when it comes to the audio-visual presentation of All-Star Fruit Racing!

Bottom-Line:

With great gameplay, excellent controls, and a breathtaking audio-visual presentation, All-Star Fruit Racing for PS4 is a fantastic arcade racer that we highly recommend to all fans of the sub genre, and with such a unique and enjoyable power-up system we had to give this game a good level of recommendation!

Review: BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle (PS4 Retail) (PAL Region)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Interdimensional Tag Battles Ahoy!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 900x

Developed by Arc System Works and published by PQube in the PAL region, Blazblue Cross Tag Battle is a great game in many ways, but is somewhat marred by an overabundance of paid dlc, is this enough to affect our opinion of the game? Yes, but it's still well worth purchasing and here's why:

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 900x

The gameplay in Blazblue Cross Tag Battle is pretty standard stuff for the Blazblue series, but with only a couple of notable changes, which honestly isn't a bad thing given how tight Blazblue's gameplay has always been. The combat is fast-paced and has tons of action, while there are a few technical fighters in the roster most characters are easy to learn how to use.

The game focuses on online modes with the only noteworthy single player mode being story mode. The online modes are pretty good and the online servers "at least the European ones" are very active and quite stable so don't expect many disconnections during matches!

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 900x

As for the gameplay additions to the formula, the  primary addition is the tag system which allows you to not only switch characters on the fly, but also perform cross combination technique between you and your tag partner which is a blast to do and a must to win online battles, other than that most of the changes are mostly to balance the game, however that one major change makes the game so much better than it would otherwise be!

The controls are very responsive and fairly easy to learn which is always a must in the fighter genre while the difficulty is perfect for players of all skill levels! The only gripe we have is that the game reuses a ton of assets from previous Arc System Works fighters, but it's not a game breaker for us.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 900x

The audio-visual presentation is fantastic, despite mostly reusing assets from various older games, everything goes together quite well. The character models look great, the stages are gorgeous, and the special effects look amazing as well! The music is fantastic, especially the RWBY season one theme! It's hard to find anything to dislike in the game's presentation.

Bottom-Line:

With great gameplay, excellent controls, and an amazing audio-visual presentation, Blazblue: Cross Tag Battle for PS4 is an amazing game that any fan of the fighter genre should enjoy. The only negative is the overabundant dlc, but otherwise the game is flawless as a result we give the game a good to great level of recommendation!

Score: ★★★★★★★★½☆ 8.5/10

Review: Sword Art Online Fatal Bullet (PS4 Retail)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Fatal Flurry of Bullets!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Title10

This is the latest installment in the SAO (Sword Art Online) series from Bandai Namco. In this game, you are a new player in the world of Gun Gale Online. Which is a post-apocalyptic world where it is a lawless world outside the main city SCC Glocken. As a new player in this competitive VRMMO (Virtual Reality Mass Multiplayer Online)  can you become the greatest player in this game?
Story

The story begins shortly after you enter the Glocken for the very first time where you are introduced to a strange young girl in a pink outfit who reveals herself to be your childhood friend "Kureha".  She begins explaining what GGO is and showing the player around town.  During the tour guide, the player is then thrust into a tournament against other players for an incredibly rare item which whoever obtains it will have a massive advantage among other players.  In this tournament, Kureha will quickly explain how to protect fight and protect yourself since in this mode it's kill or be killed. And she takes you to an area inside the dungeon so both of you won't be targeted by high tier players.  Among reaching a fork in a road both the player and Kureha runs into one of GGO top ruthless players Itsuki. Who finds two low-level players competing in the tournament and believes this a joke and lets you pass without killing you.  Once the player passes Itsuki they will end up in a teleporter room which leads to the rare item.
Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Ambush10
However, you aren't the only one who found the room.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Explai10
Your Afrs-sys could be a male or a female. It's up to the player.

The rare item is called an AFr-sys X type which  is an android that you can customize his or her looks and give it a name(He/She will be nicknamed Rei regardless of what you picked) Rei is going to function as your partner and grant you access to a special weapon called the UFG (Ultra Fiber Gun) which functions as a grappling hook  which can be used to access high ground, take down airborne enemy units (except flying Gundams)  and steal items from knocked down enemies. After this point, you will meet the original SAO character cast. Kritio can explain all the previous key points of previous games that link with Fatal Bullet to bring the player up to speed. Then the story is all downhill from here henceforth.  As the player keep your expectations extremely low when it comes to Fatal Bullet story and everything plot related.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Upgrad10
After a few upgrades, she can do banking and purchase equipment with allowance money. Rei has some pretty good taste in weapons.

A mass majority of the story is going to be about upgrading Rei from finding parts and interacting with people around it. Since you are a beginner Rei will just tell you that you suck and because your low prestige and level, the features that the Rei had are gone and doesn't remember all it can do. Rei is a trip to deal with, it will go through personality conflict crisis, extreme anxiety, moments of depression,  running away for some of the dumbest reasons, tripping over nothing, and so much more.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Kritio10
Searching for the bad guy in the tournament.

Aside from the main story which involves Rei.  After the majority of the story is finished the player gains access to play Kritio. In this mode, the story becomes much darker and a lot of people lives are on the line, as Kritio your main objective is to work alongside the Japanese Government and figure out the mysteries of why people are dying from playing GGO,  and the killing happens only during interviews and major events. The next major event is called B.O.B  where all the top ranking players will be in and most likely when the killer will strike next.  However the there are hundreds of players,  many of them are good and well known and some are just bullet sponges,  you are only given a few hours to figure out this mystery, Who is the killer? Why are they killing top players in GGO? Will Kritio and his friends be safe?
Gameplay

When it comes to gameplay Fatal Bullet does it really well here and it's a lot of fun! It is a fast-paced third-person action game. In this game, you can have up to of 3 party members join you. Each member is represented by an icon next to their name which signifies their role in combat. There are six main roles which easily fall into two categories which are Offensive and Defensive. The offensive roles are Assault, Destroyer, and Sniper. Assault is the fast hitting, in your face, and dance around bullets role,  Destroyer just use weapons and abilities that hit extremely hard, use explosions, cause black holes and leaves nothing but destruction,  Sniper picks off enemies from a distance and have very unique support abilities.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Roles10
For example. This nutcase of a woman here is an assault class character due to her icon.

As for the defensive roles you have Tank which is to soak up a lot of damage and extremely difficult to take down and most enemies will focus on the tank while the other members do their role. Engineer which uses a lot of skills to weaken enemies, decrease attack/defense, poison, shock, or set enemies on fire. The final role is to support which is basically the healer. They use healing skills, revive fallen members, increase their combat abilities. Support roles are always welcomed.

The roles are determined by the character stats and skills they have equipped.  There are six main stats in the game Strength, Vitality, Intelligence, Agility, Dexterity, and Luck. Seems simple enough but this can get complex rather quickly so here is an easy breakdown.

Strength-  Increases your carry weight, damage with photon swords (Star Wars lightsabers) and a requirement to hold weapons.   A high investment in this stat will push the character towards damage roles.

Agility- Increases your full sprint speed, accuracy, and defense. Many evasive and photon sword skills require lots of Agility. A high investment in this stat will push the character in the damager roles  mainly in the Assault role

Dexterity- Increases your accuracy, main damage with firearms, weak point damage and the main requirement to use all weapons.   As a player you must have  Dexterity,  this is the main damage stat of firearms and without investment in this, you will be locked out of 99% of the weapons.

Vitality- Increases how much damage you can take. Raises max health. A high investment with this stat puts the character into a supporter role,  also very handy with shotguns.

Intelligence-  decreases the cooldown time of skills (That's a good thing) and gadgets( Items) increases the chance of status aliments attacks working on enemies.  A high investment in this stat puts the character in Engineer or Support roles.

Luck-  Increases drop rate of items, increases the rarity of items,  reduce damage from status ailments,  increase critical hit chance.  A universal stat like Dexterity.  However, I did notice in my playthroughs high luck grants you better skills on weapons and accessories it could be just me though.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Build10

The player can only allocate stats and skills for their created character and Rei.  Any other party member will do their own skills and stats.  While using a skill that is in your role that ability becomes more effective. However, the player can equip any ability from any role as long as they meet the gun and stat requirements to do so.

In this game when it comes to equipment there are three categories weapons, accessories, and outfit.  You can find weapons and accessories from shops and sometimes fallen enemies drop them as loot.  There is no armor in this game what so ever so if you want to increase your defense, raise up the agility and vitality stats.  There are eight main weapons in the game. Going from the lightest to heaviest it is handguns,  photon swords, submachine guns, assault rifles, shotguns, sniper rifles,  RPG's/ grenade launchers and finally Gatling guns.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Weapon10
Agil is the only person in the game who can appraise your equipment to see what you obtain.  He's just awesome!

All weapon share these few traits among themselves.  Stat requirements to use them, Weapon rank,  fire type (Single, burst, semi-auto, fully automatic)  memory chips (Traits/added effects)  and rarity.  The rarity comes in different tiers,  grey, red and blue being the lowest while yellow and green being the best the higher the rarity the better stats and memory chips you will find on the equip weather if it's accessory or weapon.   The further you go in the game the weapon ranks will increase demanding higher stat requirements but in return offer higher damage outputs. Fashion is basically to look good.  And accessories are completely random when it comes to abilities. Some increase in base stats, some offer a  % of protection against certain attacks, and many are just so bad you will just sell them.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 The_mo10
The two most important characters Agil and Lisabeth. Agil appraises and buys items
from your character. Lisabeth on the right upgrades your weapons. You will be visiting them often.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Minibo10

When outside of SCC Glocken the screen changes into battle screen until you go back to town.  Here you will have an assist auto-aim that will lock on to a target that is in your firing range. If this feature is annoying it can be turned off by pressing up on the direction pad of the controller.  The thin blue bar underneath the gun icon/ bullets is the player's health bar and trust me when you start off in this game you do not get that much health and it feels like you can die so easily in this game. It does not take much effort to kill a player.  There are some defensive tactics that can work such as hiding behind cover, dashing and rolling away or just find high ground such as buildings and mountains.  The enemies will also do tricks like that including setting up ambushes, using smoke grenades to confuse the player, summon a Gundam (A giant robot with superior combat skills),   or a straight up gun fight.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Gundam10
Oh no! It's a Gundam!  Need to run FASTER!

The difficulty of enemies out in the field ranges drastically from easy to is this even fair anymore?   You have the cupcake difficulty enemies such as scorpions, bees, run and shoot automation and then you have the insanely difficult enemies which include human A.I (Artificial Intelligence) enemies which seem to never miss a shot even while rolling, A Gundam,  some evil looking hunchback monster that shoots fire and likes to run people over.  The teammates you can have on your team are classified as stupid. There have been many times where they will fail to do their role or follow commands. The player can give commands by pressing in the touchpad. Sadly many of them are just to dumb so commands are almost virtually useless. If the player falls in battle one of your team members can just run over to you and revive you. Honestly, this is a 50% chance of working.  They can run towards and just look at your corpse until they die, trip over your corpse,  run to you and then make a U-turn  and do the shuffle dance and reload their gun ( I wish I was making this up)  or my personal favorite screw up is where they do nothing but barrel rolls to your character, trip over your corpse and then get shot and die.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Fucked10
At that moment I knew... I messed up.

There are dungeons in this game and once inside you are automatically given a blank minimap and it will fill up the more you progress through the dungeon. Inside you will fight dozens of enemies who will block your path to fight if you are in a long dungeon there will be multiple teleporters. So you can just skip sections if you feel like it. Also, there are very carefully hidden treasure chests that are for a quest item, ammunition, or some rare part for upgrading.  There are mini bosses and just regular bosses. Both drop unique equipment. The only real difference between the two is that mini-bosses have around two health bars when regular bosses have three or more.

Topics tagged under retail on - Page 2 Level_11

Once you head back to town you from the field you will get results on your actions outside.  The more enemies you defeat the more money and experience you obtain, gain enough and you will level up. Every level up the player will be awarded CP which is the currency to spend on upgrading the character stats.

It is beautiful. I had no problem with the graphical look of the game characters and how it looks outside. It was just wonderfully done. You can unlock characters dates/hangouts by increasing their affinity towards you which then awards the player with unique cutscenes or romance in your bed. This does take quite of a lot of work and dedication to pull off many of the scenes are very enjoyable and quite funny. As far as problems go, there are two issues which include how dull the dungeon designs are for the majority of the dungeons and they needed to add a few more enemy designs.

Soundtrack

It was truly wonderful. The soundtrack is really good, they have some jazz pieces, upbeat songs, and a few some pop songs. My favorite pieces of music in the game comes from Zeliska theme and the music they play in the quest area lobbies like treasure hunting, PVP (Player vs Player), and unique enemies.  There is a little something for everyone. It's hard to dislike the music in this game.

Multiplayer

This what co-op looks like,  just smashing a boss.

They have a player vs player matchup which I was never able to test. Every time I join a lobby no one is ever online to play a match. The other online game mode is where you join in a room up to around eight people to fight a boss. Once the boss is defeated everyone obtains an item and some money. You do not get exp from playing online.

DLC/ Season pass worth it?

I personally do not own the DLC or Season Pass. However from word of mouth the current DLC that is out is called Ambush of the Imposters which grants access to new weapons, new hairstyles, fashion, three characters the most talked about is Musketeer X  and how awesome she is.  The new dungeons have veterans of this game ripping their hair out and comparing the difficulty to Dark Souls series (Extremely difficult games) As far as the season pass is worth it?  If you like the game sure go for it!

This game could have easily been the best of the Sword Art Online video games released. The gameplay is great, the graphics are beautiful and the soundtrack is amazing. However despite all of that the game suffers from a horrible story and terrible A.I partners.  If you look past the story you have a pretty decent game on your hands with just a few flaws but you can easily spend many hours in this game and have fun.

Review: Hakuoki ~ Edo Blossoms (Vita Retail)

Your Love For This Series Shall Henceforth Blossom or Something!

Developed and published by Idea Factory, Hakuoki: Edo Blossoms is an otome visual novel which means the story-telling is from a female's point of view. If you're some burly dude you might just immediately write this game off, however the Hakuoki series is also known for it's action and sometimes gory scenes which is a stark contrast from most visual novels from the otome sub-genre and because of this there's plenty of reasons for even men to dive into this series though we admit it's certainly not for everyone. Read the rest of our review to find out if this game is for you!

First-off Hakuoki: Edo Blossoms has several branching story-lines and different branches within those branches so be prepare to play the game dozens of times in order to see everything the game has to offer. As you'd expect the story takes center stage as this is a visual novel after all, however the game is unique in the way it weaves together action, violence, and romance in equal portions, it certainly keeps things entertaining and rarely gets boring. The game is also PSTV compatible which is always a good thing in our opinions!

The story can at times differ greatly depending on which character's story you choose to play which is great, though there are some inconsistencies at times which is unfortunate, however the overall story was quite a thrill to play through! The audio-visual presentation is amazing in Hakuoki: Edo Blossoms as the backgrounds and characters are detailed and absolutely gorgeous to look at and the music is also top-notch and fits the mood and settings of the game perfectly!

Bottom-Line:

With an excellent story that has a ton of replayability and a flawless audio-visual presentation, Hakuoki: Edo Blossoms is an excellent visual novel from start-to-finish and will entertain a wide range of people due to its variable storytelling that ranges from action/adventure, to romance, and even horror. The only drawback are a few inconsistencies in the story, but overall the game is a fantastic visual novel that we highly recommend!

Review: Super Mario Odyssey (Switch Retail)

A Grand Theft Odyssey!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Topics tagged under retail on  - Page 2 Large
Developed and published by Nintendo, Super Mario Odyssey is Mario's latest 3D platforming adventure and as expected we enjoyed every minute of the game, however we couldn't help, but notice that the game didn't feel as magical as previous 3D Mario titles, why is that? Keep reading our review to find out why.
There's no doubt that Nintendo pulled out all the stops with the production value of Super Mario Odyssey and it shows between the incredible storytelling, incredible audio-visual presentation, and sheer scope, however the game lost something so much more important in the process.
Super Mario Odyssey lacks the charm of previous Mario games, the level designs are lacking compared to most previous entries in the series and the game is quite honestly, ridiculously easy to the point where it felt like we were playing a game geared towards young children.
That's not all, the gameplay is sort of mission-based like Grand Theft Auto and unfortunately falls victim to the same issues that plagued the Jak & Daxter games after the initial title, The Precursor Legacy and feels like a completely different series now.
Don't get us wrong it's a solid game, but it doesn't feel like a Mario game at its core and that's a serious problem when you're talking about a series that was not only at the top of the sales charts with every release in the franchise, but arguably the most beloved series in the video game industry, it honestly makes no sense why Nintendo would choose to reinvent the series at this time.
The controls in the game are very responsive and easy to learn which is always a good thing in our opinions.
Visually Super Mario Odyssey looks absolutely spectacular and really pushes the limit of the Nintendo Switch's hardware especially in docked mode, but it still looks great in handheld mode as well!
The soundtrack is quite varied as well with some pretty amazing vocal songs, however the music in the game's many levels was somewhat lacking, which was quite disappointing, but even so it's still great to listen to.
Bottom-Line:
While the gameplay and story is solid, Super Mario Odyssey reinvented the series despite there being no need to do so and in the process has lost some of that special Nintendo magic the series has possessed for decades. While the controls and audio-visual presentation are fantastic we still give the game the lowest score of any mainstream release in the Mario series to-date. While the game is solid it was a major disappointment and as such we give Super Mario Odyssey a solid level of recommendation.
