Nintendo said they were selling 3DS hardware at a loss because of all the price drops. Their shares also dropped as they added a price cut. The figure ($500M) comes as no surprise.

500 million is always a big loss, but it shouldn't affect Nintendo's future plans too much unless some mistakes are made with the WiiU and they need everything they can get. I'm not too worried about Nintendo's financial state yet.

Watch Nintendo will release the WiiU without letting anyone know about their plans lol. 
SEGA joke aside I doubt Nintendo will make the same mistakes they did with the launch of the 3DS, they're smart enough to realise that they can't mess the WiiU launch up.
