Review: Tower Princess (Switch eShop)

The Princess Is Hangin' In Another Castle!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Topics tagged under nindie on  Towerp10
Developed by AweKteaM, published by Hypetrain Digital, and public relations by Vicarious PR, Tower Princess is a roguelike 3D platformer with sadistically challenging soulslike gameplay that is sure to challenge even the most stalwart video game champions and do so in a way that's possible for average gamers to learn its difficulty curve! Does this equate to an enjoyable experience? We think so and here's why:
Topics tagged under nindie on  Towerp10
The story is pretty straightforward in Tower Princess, save a princess from a deadly tower and become her suitor, pretty much just flavor text for a HUGE portion of the game, but it gives you a reason for venturing into the dangerous towers filled with enemies and traps. The gameplay is where the real meat of the game lies with expansive roguelike towers filled with danger and adventure as well as upgrades and power-up's for your randomly generated protagonists that will help you further progress in the game's very light, but at times can be quite engaging the two or three times the game gets story-heavy for a moment.
The platforming can require extreme precision at times and there are many deviously difficult puzzles that can spawn during a run that can challenge even the most observant of players. Bosses also require a lot of strategy so don't expect to survive if you try to mindlessly hack away at a boss in this game.
Topics tagged under nindie on  Towerp11
The levels are brilliantly generated with tons of possible layouts with no issues as far as things such as poorly generated terrain so you don't have to worry about getting stuck due to bad RNG. The difficulty is SUPER challenging and can feel  impassable at times, but with enough grinding and practice most gamers should be able to beat the game eventually.
The controls are easy to learn and very responsive and the length of Tower Princess' story is roughly around 30 hours in length give or take depending on your skill level.
Topics tagged under nindie on  Towerp12
The audiovisual presentation of Tower Princess is solid with good 3D levels that have some good details, decent character and enemy designs, and great shadowing and lighting effects such as torchlight, and solar blooming in outdoor sections that look really quite nice! And lastly the extremely limited voice acting is in the forgettable territory, but not bad and the soundtrack while not the most fitting for the game is still largely enjoyable.
Topics tagged under nindie on  Towerp13
Bottom-Line:With great gameplay, a solid audiovisual presentation, and responsive and easy to learn controls, Tower Princess is a great 3D platformer that is sure to keep players coming back for more, but lack of story might be a bit disappointing for some as what is present is really enjoyable. Overall we give Tower Princess for Nintendo Switch a good level of recommendation!
Review: My Time At Portia (PS4 PSN)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Extravagant Abode?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Topics tagged under nindie on  Ap_3d710
My Time at Portia, released on April 16, has been well received by the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One communities alike.  It has several points that make it an excellent game.  Do you think you’ll enjoy it?  We think so and here’s why.
Topics tagged under nindie on  Ap_c8c10
Developed by Pathea and published by Team17, My Time at Portia is a relaxing yet highly addictive game.  This crafting sim has several activities to keep you busy throughout your gameplay, from crafting to farming and many more in between.
Starting out with Pa’s inheritance of the workshop, you’re thrust into the world of Portia at a fairly good clip.  The tutorials are very simple, and the controls are extremely easy to figure out.  After chatting with Presley, you learn you must register your workshop in order to accept commissions, which is the lifeblood of this game as far as its currency, gols, along with earning relationships with your fellow townspeople.  There is the main storyline, and it’s entertaining but feels slow at times.  It’s not enough to sway one from the game, however.
Topics tagged under nindie on  Ap_c0e10
As the game goes by, the missions become increasingly difficult along with relationships harder to earn. They aren’t insurmountable, but they do take a bit of strategy and finesse at times.  New areas of the map open up as you complete your tasks, which lead to more opportunities for your character to flourish.
Topics tagged under nindie on  Ap_b2010
Now to the very integral part of the game: your workshop.  This is what the game revolves around.  You need it in basically each mission you attempt along with upgrading it.  Your missions are based upon certain levels of machinery, and the quests will not progress until you reach that milestone. It’s not impossible, just time-consuming.
The devs have been extremely helpful and polite to the community, listening to their complaints and promising full game content in the near future. Their communication is unique as far as a dev goes, but this is another aspect which makes the game great.
Now to the cons.  There have been bugs reported by players, ranging from ridiculous to game-breaking.  They are few and far between, but when they rear their ugly heads, you typically have to leave the area and start again.  The hopeful part is the devs are aware of this and are working diligently on a patch.
Some of the timed missions don’t specify they have a strict time constraint unless you open your mission book and review the quest.  There were several times when I had the dreaded failed quest announcement flash across my screen, so it was only logical to restart the day.  With the knowledge of the timer, the quests can quickly be completed in the allotted time.
Relationships take a long time to attain, but it isn’t hopeless.  There are many different levels of gifting for each player, points determined by the type of gift you give the NPC. Between fostering these relationships and carrying on with your missions or free play, the player won’t run out of things to do.
Topics tagged under nindie on  Ap_49810
The graphics are in a soft 3D style, which adds to the peaceful feeling that the game has. Sometimes the rendering is comical, but all-in-all they are deemed pleasant.  The audio is another story. When you start playing, it’s interesting and enjoyable.  However, when you have a few hours in, the soundtrack becomes very monotonous.  A more ranged soundtrack would have been welcome in My Time at Portia.
Topics tagged under nindie on  Ap_3d710
Overall, the pros definitely outweigh the cons.  The fact that the devs are hard at work devising a patch makes this game more attractive.  Taking the entire impression of MyTime at Portia, we give this game good level of recommendation!
Afternote: Team17 released the update for My Time at Portia this past week (May 23) and like many gamers that play, I am very pleased with the updates and bug fixes that were plaguing random players.  While there are more updates promised, this one nipped the infinite loading bug and seemed to have solved the disappearing item bug as well.  The graphics are more pleasing since the patch with additions to the load screen and subtle differences in gameplay.  New quests and small improvements to existing content were added, making the game feel more rounded.  You can view full information on the update here.
Score: ★★★★★★★★☆☆ 8/10
Holy Cleopatra!
Developed and published by The Quantum Astrophysicists Guild, Tumblestone is a match-three puzzler like no other, as it possesses some of the best multiplayer action that we've ever seen in the genre as well as many unique modes of play!
Tumblestone's single player campaign starts off relatively easy, but quickly becomes exceptionally difficult to the point that the game might be too tough for the average player to complete. The multiplayer is the real draw of the game and it's among the best in the genre in that regard! There are several modes of multiplayer including tug of war, vs., and more that will test you and your friends' skills.
Topics tagged under nindie on  885x18
The controls are easy to learn and work quite well with the game. As for the visuals they are quite nice for a puzzler and there's quite a nice variety to the stage backgrounds, characters, and the world maps. The music and sound effects are also superb so expect a fantastic audio-visual presentation with this game!
Bottom-Line:
With excellent gameplay and intuitive controls Tumblestone will immediately hook fans of the puzzle genre and the challenging difficulty will keep you coming back for more, though the biggest draw of Tumblestone is most certainly its fantastic multiplayer modes! The charming graphics and excellent soundtrack is just the virtual cherry on top! There's really no reason to skip this game if you like the genre other than its price. At $24.99 it's one of the most expensive eShop only titles, however it feels like a retail game so the price is understandable!
Review: Witch & Hero II (3DS eShop)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Defend My Witch!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Topics tagged under nindie on  300x22
Developed by Flyhigh Works and published by Circle Entertainment, Witch & Hero II is a fantastic tower defense / roleplaying game that is great fun in small doses, but is it fun enough to keep you coming back for more? Continue reading our review to find out the answer to that question!
The gameplay in Witch & Hero II is a unique blend of roleplaying and tower defense with a bit of strategy genre thrown into the mix! Your hero must run into enemies to damage them, YS series veterans will feel right at home with this formula. Your hero is immortal so he needs to protect the fragile witch who has extremely low defenses or it's game over! On the flipside the witch has incredibly powerful and useful magic that can help clear out enemies so careful strategy is key to beating each of the game's many stages! The game is separated into stages and though it starts off easy it quickly becomes incredibly challenging!
Topics tagged under nindie on  300x23
Witch & Hero II is a fairly short game and can be beaten within six hours or so, but it's great fun! A little warning though, you might want to limit your gameplay sessions as the game can get very repetitive during longplays of the game. In-terms of controls they are very solid and quite intuitive in this game which is always a good thing!
Visually Witch & Hero II looks nice in a very retro way with excellent 8-bit backgrounds, dungeons, characters, and enemies the game just oozes with retro goodness! The soundtrack is also decent, but not all that memorable, regardless it gets the job done!
Topics tagged under nindie on  300x24
Bottom-Line:
With unique and solid gameplay, excellent controls, and gorgeous 8-bit visuals, Witch & Hero II is a fantastic blend of unique ideas that are decidedly refreshing, however an unmemorable soundtrack and repetitive gameplay hold the game back from true awesomeness. Nonetheless Witch & Hero II is still a solid title that we recommend to any fans of RPG's and the strategy genre!
Review: Chasing Dead (Wii U eShop)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Gorgeously Awful...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Topics tagged under nindie on  Chasin10
Developed and published by 2020 Venture, Chasing Dead is an action-horror FPS game with survival elements and actually has a very frightening story, however is the gameplay as good as other games in the genre? We don't think so and here's why:
The story is dark and your character must travel to a second Earth that has appeared in the sky and investigate it. Not all is as it seems as the world is filled with mutants, zombies, and even behemoths that look strikingly similar to the titans in the anime series Attack On Titan. This does give the game a very frightening sense of urgency just to survive.
Topics tagged under nindie on  Chasin11
The gameplay is quite lackluster, however with confusing gameplay and navigation issues that will leave players scratching their heads. Overall the layout of the world is very poor and to make matters worse the game suffers from frame-rate issues with the frame-rate dropping below 15 frames per second at times which is just unbearable.
The controls are also very awkward and take quite awhile to get used to. In fact the control scheme in Chasing Dead for the Wii U is among the most awkward controls that we've ever experienced in a game and that says alot given some of the terrible controls that some third party Wii titles possessed. The Gamepad features are okay with Off-TV-Play taking center stage, but that's certainly not enough to save the game from extreme criticism.
Topics tagged under nindie on  Chasin12
The graphics in Chasing Dead for Wii U are actually superb for an indie title and actually looks like an early PS3 title visually with a vibrant and incredibly detailed world in glorious HD and very detailed character and enemy models as well, however as we already mentioned the game suffers from absolutely atrocious frame-rate issues which seriously hurts the game's overall score.
In-terms of audio, Chasing Dead does have a good deal of voice acting and atmospheric music/sound effects, however the audio cuts out frequently and makes loud buzzing sounds when the frame-rate dips so again that's a serious strike against the game.
Topics tagged under nindie on  Chasin13
Bottom-Line:
With superb HD visuals and excellent soundtrack/ambiance Chasing Dead could have been a great adult-oriented title for the Wii U eShop, however lackluster gameplay, absolutely awful controls, and audio issues alongside the game's unforgivable frame-rate issues make Chasing Dead a title that you should avoid at all costs, especially given its price.
Review: Sadame (3DS eShop)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Atmospheric Bloody Adventure!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Topics tagged under nindie on  300x15
Developed by Mebius and published by Rising Star Games, Sadame is an action-packed RPG which feels somewhat similar to classics such as the Mana series, but with a much darker story! Does Sadame live up to the classics that defined the action-RPG genre? Continue reading our review to find out!
The gameplay in Sadame is extremely fast-paced and is definitely a part of the hack 'n slash sub-genre of RPG's. You can choose one of four character classes each with unique skills and techniques. These characters essentially share the same story, so don't expect four unique campaigns.
The several locations in the game are populated by many normal enemies and massive boss monsters that'll test your skills and even after you beat the game there's more to do. Overall the gameplay and story are fairly solid, though the latter takes a backseat to actual gameplay in this particular title! Also for some reason the game is really addictive and we haven't been able to stop picking up where we had previously left off on a daily basis!
Topics tagged under nindie on  300x16
The controls are quite solid and as bizarre as this may sound even on a 2DS the game seems to possess some sort of a faux 3D effect though admittedly it's only slightly noticeable.
The game's visuals are excellent, sure they won't blow players away, but the art-direction is superb with very detailed characters and enemies as well as fantastic visual effects! The music is fairly memorable as well with some great tracks along with a few "meh" ones, but overall the audio-visual presentation is great!
Topics tagged under nindie on  300x17
Bottom-Line:
With solid gameplay that's highly addictive, excellent controls, and a great audio-visual presentation Sadame is a great 3DS game for fans of action-RPG's and as such we give the game a great level of recommendation!
Price: $14.99
Review: Star Ghost (Wii U eShop)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

A Hauntingly Difficult And Fantastic Shmup For U!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Topics tagged under nindie on  Full10
Developed and published by Squarehead Studios Star Ghost is an extremely challenging yet enjoyable procedurally generated shoot 'em up title released exclusively on the Wii U! Does the game live up to its Studios' Rare pedigree? Continue reading our review to find out!
The gameplay is fairly simple with the A button being used to move the ship up "release it to drop altitude" and the left analog stick is used to shoot and aim your shots. The controls definitely take some getting used to, but it shouldn't take too long to learn them. Still it would be nice if the controls were a little less awkward. Star Ghost is divided into several sectors with multiple procedurally generated stages. The stages and enemy patterns are well balanced so the game never feels cheap or unfair.
Topics tagged under nindie on  Full11
There are several types of enemies and obstacles that are introduced as you progress through the sectors and from the second sector on you'll face-off against boss battles! The boss battles play-out like a game of cat-and-mouse, but after awhile the roles are reversed and you'll take the offensive to defeat the worn-down bosses. This is a refreshing new take on boss battles that we thoroughly enjoyed in the game!
You can also earn blue orbs to spend on power-ups, health, and even a continue if you earn enough orbs. Purchasing continues is very important early on in the game when orbs are easier to come across and you're less likely to die. You only get one life per continue and start off with absolutely no continues and everything past the second sector is quite challenging so expect to replay the game many times before reaching the end!
Topics tagged under nindie on  Full12
Star Ghost also features flawless Off-TV-Play which is an excellent feature to say the least. In-terms of the audio-visual presentation the game is superb! Visually the stage backgrounds are vibrant and detailed with excellent lighting effects. The ship looks decidedly retro and so do the aquatic and insectoid enemies! The look of the stages will instantly remind gamers from the 80's and 90's of titles such as Gradius and Salamander!
The music is by far the game's strongest point, as the entire sound-track has been composed by the video gaming legend David Wise himself! With music this good you'll feel like you've been sent to the past and it's a wonderful feeling! The rest of the audio in Star Ghost sounds like something you would have heard in a 90's arcade room! You just won't find many modern games with such an authentic turn of the millennium sound-track and sound effects which is something we feel must be stressed as the developer deserves praise for this accomplishment!
Topics tagged under nindie on  Full13
Bottom-Line:
With excellent gameplay that is extremely challenging, but never feels cheap, fantastic visuals, Off-TV-Play, and one of the best sound-tracks we've heard from an eShop title Star Ghost is near perfection, however the rather awkward controls do take some getting used to so we felt that was an issue. Regardless Star Ghost is a wonderful title and because of that we give the game a great level of recommendation!
Hello! Thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule to join us for this interview!
[Arcane4]: No problem at all, thanks for contacting us.
Could you tell us about your team who's hard at work developing Rynn's Adventure?
[Arcane4]: "Sure, the core game development team at Arcane Four Studios is made up of three long time friends who met in high school while working on text-based games using Qbasic. Our team is currently geographically dispersed across Canada, which means that most of our development work takes place online using Google Hangouts. We are passionate lifelong gamers and are immensely excited to be releasing our first game on the various systems that we play every day ourselves!
In terms of our primary jobs, Shawn is our game designer, Jon is our programmer, and Mike is our artist. All three of us love the role we have in making games, and have spent the majority of our lives honing the skills required for our jobs in one way or another."
How long has Rynn's Adventure been in development?
[Arcane4]: We have been working on Rynn's Adventure for about a year and a half (if you include time used for porting our game to various systems, and certification). The idea for Rynn's Adventure started in October of 2014, but major development work didn't start until 2015 and now we are already into 2016, boy does time fly when you are having fun!
Rynn, the protagonist seems rather familiar, wasn't there an old story or mythology about Rynn the fox?
[Arcane4]: We aren’t aware of any stories of a fox named Rynn aside from our own, however we wouldn't be surprised that someone else out there has had similar ideas, it is a big world with a lot of people dreaming up all kinds of wacky and great things. Please let us know if you find that mythological fox that seemed familiar to you, I am sure that we would enjoy that story as well. =)
What games inspired your team to develop Rynn's Adventure?
[Arcane4]: We were inspired by the classic games that we grew up playing such as Mario, Metroid, Sonic, Mega Man, and many others. We have been huge Nintendo fans since the original NES days, and that is why we wanted to make a game that reminded us of those fond memories we had as kids, but with some modern twists of course.
Topics tagged under nindie on  Rynn-210
About how many levels will Rynn's Adventure possess?
[Arcane4]: Rynn's Adventure follows the classic stage format that Mega Man fans will already be familiar with. After completing a brief tutorial the player will be presented with a stage select screen. From there they can choose which order to complete any of the eight unique environments and defeat the bosses causing trouble in each region. Doing this will unlock the path to the Dark Wizard’s castle where Rynn's parents are being held captive!
Will the game feature any multiplayer elements?
[Arcane4]: "We thought about doing multi-player but decided early on that we would leave features like that for future games, such as possible Rynn's Adventure sequels.
We are fans of multi-player capability in video games, but felt that Rynn's Adventure, like many games of its type, was more than capable of delivering a fun experience as a single player game."
What kind of gameplay elements can we expect to encounter in the course of the game? We already know minecart stages and skiing stages are in based on the trailer!
[Arcane4]: "We made it a priority with Rynn's Adventure to offer players a wide variety of unique environments and interesting mechanics so that each stage felt very different from each other. For example, one stage, "Danger Underfoot", takes place in a large cavern below the Enchanted Forest and focuses on reversing gravity back and forth in order to make progress and complete the stage.
In addition, each stage has a big boss encounter at the end that requires the player to figure out the boss’s weak point in order to defeat them. Every boss’s weak point is different, and so the player will have to try more than simply jumping on the enemy’s head a few times."
Topics tagged under nindie on  Screen10
What makes Rynn's Adventure unique compared to other platforming titles?
[Arcane4]: The platforming genre is such a deeply developed genre with so many big titles that it is difficult to be completely unique. However, we believe that the magic is not necessarily in being completely unique, but rather in how you piece things together in interesting and different ways. We hope that players will enjoy playing as Rynn the fox as she journeys through the Enchanted Forest, in a fairy tale styled adventure.
When can we expect Rynn's Adventure to hit the Wii U eShop in NA/EU?
[Arcane4]: Very soon hopefully! We have already submitted our game to Nintendo and we are waiting for it to make it through the process on their end. This, of course, makes it hard for us to know exactly when it will be available. We will be sure to let you all know when you can expect Rynn's Adventure the moment we know ourselves.
Thanks, for answering our questions! We really appreciate it, hopefully we'll have the opportunity to interview you again sometime!
[Arcane4]: Thank you for this opportunity, we would be glad to talk with you again any time.
Take care!
[Arcane4]: Likewise!
Two Tribes has officially announced that they're departing the game development industry and that their upcoming multi-platform side-scrolling shooter Rive will be releasing in September as the studios' final title. The game will also be hitting the Wii U eShop in September. Here's the reason why the crew over at Two Tribes is calling it quits:
Two Tribes wrote:
Dinosaurs:
As said, we've been working in the games industry since early 2000, making us dinosaurs, old farts, grandfathers or whatever you want to call us. This is great, because we've got a lot experience, but it also means that we act like a typical grandfather: slow and totally unaware of what is hot and what is not.
Don't get us wrong: we absolutely love making games, and we strongly feel that we're good at making them. However, ask us anything about new industry developments, and often a big question mark will appear above our heads.
For example, we are used to working with our own proprietary engine. It's technology that works great for us, but is by no means competitive with tools like Unity or the Unreal Engine. And then there are monetization strategies like free-to-play. We only know, and feel comfortable working with, the traditional model of full-priced games.
The same goes for marketing: we know how to make a decent trailer and send out a press release… but have no clue how to get traction on YouTube and Twitch.
Wrapping up:
Long story short (grandfathers like to digress!): when running a company, you need to be on top of your game, not just in terms of the product you're making, but business-wise too. And we just aren't on top of the games business anymore.
Therefore, it makes sense to focus our attention elsewhere, perhaps even outside the games industry. We simply don't know yet; but we do know that RIVE is going to be our parting gift to you and we're making damn sure it's going to be an awesome one!
It's such a shame that such a longtime competitor in the indie scene is calling it quits, but such is life, we wholeheartedly wish their team the best in their future endeavors!
Review: The Legend of The Dark Witch (3DS eShop)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

A Bewitching Adventure!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Topics tagged under nindie on  300x10
Developed by Inside System and published by CIRCLE Entertainment, The Legend of The Dark Witch is a Megaman-style action-platformer that faithfully recreates the intense action and enjoyable gameplay formula of the early Megaman titles and adds a few of its own twists to give the game a unique feel! Does this mean that the game surpasses the early Megaman entries in-terms of quality? Not necessarily, however the game is still fantastic in its own right and here's why:
The gameplay is straightforward for any Megaman fan as you basically play through six stages of action platforming, shooting your way past many weaker enemies and at the end of each stage you'll face-off against a powerful "master" of the stage and if you beat her, you'll receive her power! Certain powers are effective against certain masters just like in the Megaman series!
Topics tagged under nindie on  300x13
There are some definite tweaks to the classic Megaman formula as enemies will drop butterfly looking orbs that you can collect and use to enhance your abilities and weapons! The game also features a neat minigame that can be quite enjoyable so we won't spoil it for you!
The controls are quite intuitive and very easy to learn and the 3D effects are either very weak or nonexistent, we honestly couldn't tell which was the case.
Visually the game is gorgeous, as are the adorable anime-style girls that you can play as, and face-off against a.k.a. the masters! The backgrounds in the stages and level design are also magnificent! The soundtrack is also absolutely incredible in The Legend of The Dark Witch and is possibly its strongest asset which is saying alot given the overall quality of the game!
Topics tagged under nindie on  300x14
Bottom-Line:
If you are a fan of cute anime girl protagonists and antagonists, as well as fantastic Megaman-style action-platforming, The Legend of The Dark Witch is quite possibly the best 3DS eShop title that fills those two checkboxes! The flawless controls, and picture-perfect audio-visual presentation make this game the perfect choice for fans of the genre and because of this we give the game a near perfect score!
Review: Alphadia (3DS eShop)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Solid Energi!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Topics tagged under nindie on  299110
Developed by ExeCreates and published by Kemco, Alphadia is the first title in the fairly popular Alphadia series which up until now has mostly been released on mobile devices with the exception of Alphadia Genesis which released on the Wii U eShop a couple of years ago! We gave Alphadia Genesis for the Wii U an excellent score in our review of the game which can be viewed by clicking on this link, but does Alphadia live up to the fairly high bar that Alphadia Genesis set? We don't feel it does, but it's still a solid game in our opinion and here's why:
In-terms of the story, everything's fairly simplistic in a retro-RPG sort of way and for the most part nothing will really surprise you as the plot-twists are relatively weak in this game, but that being said there's still alot of substance to the plot so it isn't all bad. Perhaps the fact that we played Alphadia Genesis first might have made us aware of plot-twists beforehand so it may not be the game's fault.
Topics tagged under nindie on  Alphad11
The gameplay is fairly solid and feels like a classic SNES RPG such as Final Fantasy IV, V, or VI with excellent turn-based battles, a fairly large world map, and some devilishly lengthy and challenging dungeons. The battles start off way too easy for the first 10-15 hours of the game, but once you gain access to the ship things become incredibly difficult.
The game is also fairly lengthy and will likely provide newcomers with 30-40 hours of gameplay and can take upwards of 50 hours if you're a completionist!
Visually the game looks nice! The 16-bit graphics in battles, towns, dungeons, and the world map are excellent, while the hand-drawn anime-style cutscenes look superb. The special effects can look good at times, while at others they look fairly cheap. The sound effects in the game are decidedly retro and fit the game well while the soundtrack is fantastic and will really immerse you into the game!
Topics tagged under nindie on  Alphad10
Bottom-Line:
With a good story that's fairly predictable if you've already played Alphadia Genesis for the Wii U, excellent gameplay with an unbalanced difficulty level, and a mostly superb audio-visual presentation, Alphadia is far from perfect, but is still a very solid title if you're a fan of JRPG's. And as such we give the game a solid level of recommendation!
Price: £8.99/€9.99/$9.99
Review: Oddworld New 'n' Tasty (Wii U eShop)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Better Than A Bag O' Flesh-Pops!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Topics tagged under nindie on  Oddwor10
Developed by Just Add Water and published by Oddworld Inc, Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty is an HD remake of the original Oddworld title for the Sony PSX! The original version of the game was incredibly eerie and dark and was overall a fantastic game, so how does New 'n' Tasty stack up to the original? Continue reading our review to find out!
The story is very dark and sinister in Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty just as was in Oddworld: Abe's Odyssey on the PSX. Some elements of the story have been altered a bit both in a good way and bad way depending on the scene, but overall the story is still great for a platformer. The gameplay is still excellent with limited powers and emphasis on stealth, Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty is a challenging yet fun platformer that will certainly hook any fan of 2D platformers.
Besides the traditional platforming elements, the game possesses some clever puzzles including crates, levers, and intricate enemy patterns in some sections that require careful planning to get by as well as "endless runner" style areas where you ride a beast across hazardous areas filled with spikes and pitfalls among other dangers and it feels quite rewarding to get past these areas!
Topics tagged under nindie on  Large10
The controls are somewhat shoddy in our opinion, it's not broken, but the button mapping is pretty bad and there's no way to change it in the options which really brings the game down. There's also an issue where audio doesn't play from the Gamepad during cut-scenes which kills the mood during Off-TV sessions.
Visually the game is bright a colorful which is a stark contrast to the dark and eerie art-style the original Abe's Odyssey had on the PSX. Sure the environments look nicer for the most part, but this change completely ruins the game's atmosphere. Not only that, but the game's special effects and multiple layered hand-drawn claymation-style backgrounds were completely nerfed and replaced with more simplistic and in most cases inferior looking effects and backgrounds. These visual issues were problematic enough to force us to drop the overall score by one point.
In-terms of audio, however Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty shines. The sound effects are excellent and the music is superb and fits the game well! The voice acting during the cut-scenes is cheezy at times, but in a 90's Saturday morning cartoon sort of way, which is a good thing in our opinion!
Topics tagged under nindie on  Maxres10
Bottom-Line:
With fantastic gameplay that is both highly enjoyable and challenging, a great story with excellent cinematics, and a great audio presentation, Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty is a great game in its own right, however it fails to reach its true potential thanks to shoddy, poorly mapped controls, and a seriously downgraded visual presentation when compared to the original Abe's Odyssey on the PSX. There's also the issue with no sound coming from the gamepad during cut-scenes which will hopefully be addressed in a future patch, but overall the game is still solid to good and as such we award the game with an appropriate score!
Price: $14.99
Action-packed Insanity Coming Soon!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under nindie on Origin10

The well known mid-sized developer Rising Star Games has confirmed that they will be localizing the 3DS action-RPG Sadame for the North American and European regions! Here's the official overview of the game:

Official Overview wrote:Translating simply as 'fate', four warriors are called to battle with a whirl of swords, spells and mysterious arcane abilities in this fast-paced hack-'n-slash adventure. Cut a swathe through waves of demons as you battle against the vivid backdrop of a reimagined Warring States period of Japan.

Players guide their chosen hero through dozens of stages, facing an onslaught of over twenty enormous bosses, collecting loot, enhancing their equipment and levelling up with new abilities with which to punish and slay Nobunaga's hordes.

Choose from the sword-wielding Samurai; the ranged and stealthy Ninja; the spell-slinging Monk or the enchanting witchery of the Rogue. Each of the four playable heroes has a distinct story and gameplay style with their own abilities and skills to explore and enhance.

However, as loot is shared between multiple save files and previously created heroes can be set to assist new ones in battle – not to mention the branching paths offered by the story – Sadame offers a huge amount of replay value.

Sadame is said to feature four characters that each have a completely unique fighting style as well as interesting use of the Streetpass feature! The game will be hitting the 3DS eShop in North America and Europe on February 25th!

Be sure to checkout the official trailer of the game and as always feel free to leave us your thoughts in our comments section below!

Review: Level 22 (Wii U eShop)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
An Enjoyable Bugfest...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under nindie on 885x10

Developed and published by Moving Player, Level 22 is a unique and enjoyable stealth-platformer that has many strong points, however it's riddled with a ton of major bugs. Do these bugs completely ruin the experience? Not quite, and here's why:

The gameplay in Level 22 is straightforward you must hide from all guards and employees by either distracting them or hiding from them to reach your office on floor 22 undetected to keep your job! The difficulty can be quite challenging at times, but it can be a rewarding experience to say the least.

The controls are passable, however they certainly could be better and it'll take players awhile to get used to them. The gamepad features are fairly sparse for a game that requires the controller, with touch controls being used for some actions in the game for some unknown reason which feels out of place in the game, however the Off-TV-Play feature is fully functioning and is a nice feature to have!

Topics tagged under nindie on Large14

The enemy patterns are usually easy to read, however there's some issues that occur from time-to-time where the enemies don't follow their predetermined paths and that's not the only major bug that we found in Level 22, for instance one time when we hid in a box, a mailman picked up the package a drug us off forcing us to reset the game in order to progress. These issues really hampered this otherwise solid title in our opinions.

Visually Level 22 has a nice artstyle, nothing too impressive mind you, but it still looks nice with detailed stages filled with often humorous characters and objects. The sound effects are somewhat simplistic and the music is pretty generic in our opinions, but overall the audio-visual presentation is decent enough.

Topics tagged under nindie on 885x11

Bottom-Line:

With good gameplay, and decent audio-visual presentation Level 22 had the potential to be a solid game, however many bugs and other issues seriously hold the game back, but despite these issues there's still fun to be had with the game. We give Level 22 a decent level of recommendation!

Review: RV-7 My Drone (3DS eShop)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My Drone, Not Feeling It...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under nindie on 300x10

Developed and published by Enjoy Up Games, RV-7 My Drone is an action game that has you control a drone and try to complete certain tasks without being sent to the scrapyard, but is this game any fun? We have serious mixed feelings about the game and here's why:

The gameplay in RV-7 My Drone is really shallow, you basically go on missions with your drone, save civilians, secure cargo, etc. in what amounts to undless fetch quests. These mundane quests quickly grow old and there's not a whole lot of features that keep your mind off of this fact.

The stages are randomly generated which makes each playthrough unique which is nice. The controls are also very intuitive and easy to learn so that's a very good thing!

Topics tagged under nindie on 300x11

Their are several different enemy types, but there isn't much variety in their behavior and the difficulty of the game is very unpredictable at times which is quite annoying.

Visually the game looks really bad. The art-direction is very incoherent as there is no theme or consistency to the stages or enemies. The worst part is that there's alot of visual glitches in this game that we ran across which ruined the visual presentation even further for us. Issues included cropping and pop-in, but there were several other issues with the game's visuals as well.

In-terms of audio, the sound effects are decent enough, and the music is okay, but nothing that really stands out, overall the audio-visual presentation is definitely below average.

Topics tagged under nindie on 300x12

Bottom-Line:

With shallow gameplay and a poor audio-visual presentation, as well as a poorly balanced difficulty level RV-7 My Drone fails in many aspects, sure it can be somewhat fun in short bursts and some tweaks to the gameplay would have made the game average in-terms of quality, but as it is the game is quite poor at providing gamers a reasonable experience so we can't really recommend this game to our fan-base. RV-7 My Drone gets a below average recommendation from us...

Review: Shadow Puppeteer (Wii U eShop)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Shallow Shadowy Platforming...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under nindie on Wiiu_s39

Developed by Sarepta Studio and published by Snow Cannon Games Shadow Puppeteer is a 3D platformer that has some very unique gameplay and an excellent co-op mode, however it is marred by seriously repetitive gameplay, but is the repetition enough to make us not recommend the game? We don't think so and here's why:

The gameplay in Shadow Puppeteer is relatively unique, you must team up with the protagonists shadow in order to solve puzzles and progress through the platforming stages. The protagonist must traverse through a 3D plane whereas his shadow must navigate a 2D plane as he can only travel across the walls in most situations.

Topics tagged under nindie on 630x43

The co-op is where this game truly shines and it's quite enjoyable. One player controls the protagonist, while the other controls his shadow overall the game is much more enjoyable when playing with a friend! The game does have issues though such as repetitious stages and puzzles which really hurt the game overall.

The controls in the game are fairly solid, however it's quite challenging to control both characters at once in single-player mode. Visually the game is really good looking, especially the animated cutscenes which look amazing! The character models are fairly unique as well, but the stages themselves are a bit bland looking which is a bit disappointing. In-terms of audio the game's sound effects are fairly good and the music also fits the game very well! Overall the audio-visual presentation in Shadow Puppeteer is great!

Topics tagged under nindie on 630x44

Bottom-Line:

With solid gameplay that is quite unique, fantastic co-op, and a great audio-visual presentation, Shadow Puppeteer has its moments and can be a very fun game, however sometimes confusing controls and repetitious gameplay really hold the game back, but overall we give Shadow Puppeteer a solid recommendation!

Review: FreezeMe (Wii U eShop)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
An Ice Solid Platforming Adventure Awaits U!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under nindie on Freeze16

Developed and published by the one person crew at Rainy Night Creations FreezeMe is love letter to the platformers of the 90's with some modern and unique touches that will remind players of the golden age of the video game industry, however some bugs are present, but are they bad enough to warrant staying away from this title? We don't think so and here's why:

The gameplay in FreezeMe is relatively straightforward you must collect Golden Cubes to beat levels and you can collect Green Pig Coins for doing side quests in the various levels. Some side quests are only available in certain levels and there are also several hidden Salamanders to find which unlock neat features post-game! There are also six challenge stages on top of the four main worlds in the game as well as 40 individual levels within the four main worlds. The game can take upwards of 30 hours to complete and admittedly even then you might not find all of the Salamanders in that time-frame as some are incredibly well-hidden!

Topics tagged under nindie on Freeze17

The freezing mechanic is the most unique element in the game and is used to hold bosses in place, use enemies as platforms to reach higher areas, and to freeze certain moving objects such as lifts, rotating platforms, etc. The camera can be somewhat clunky, but it's no worse than that of the typical 90's era 3D platformer.

The game also features anti-gravity sections and planetoids in each of the four main worlds that add a serious Super Mario Galaxy feel to the gameplay formula. The controls are somewhat floaty and could be better, but they're still leagues better than most 90's era 3D platformers so it's not a huge issue. The co-op mode feels very reminiscent of the co-star feature in Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 and is a great feature that is extremely fun!

Topics tagged under nindie on Freeze18

The visuals in the game are fantastic and look like they belong in a AAA Gamecube title! The character models are excellent, the worlds are massive and detailed, and the level designs are absolutely breathtaking! In-terms of audio the sound effects are typical fare for a 3D platformer, however FreezeMe's soundtrack is truly exceptional and fits the game like a glove!

Now for the bad, FreezeMe has several annoying bugs that seem to occur when using certain external hard-drives. One causes all of the buttons except the movement stick on the controller to stop working for the first 10-20 seconds of a level from time to time, and the other causes the controllers to be swapped during co-op which can be seriously annoying, thankfully these only occur when using certain hard-drives so if this happens move the game to your Wii U's internal memory to solve the issue!

Topics tagged under nindie on Freeze19

Bottom-Line:

With fantastic gameplay and loads of content as well as a breathtaking audio-visual presentation FreezeMe is an excellent platformer that will remind players of 3D platformers of yesteryear, however this also comes with the typical clunkiness of the controls and cameras from games back then, but overall the game is absolutely incredible! The bugs, however seriously hamper the game, but are thankfully not gamebreaking by any means so we give FreezeMe for the Wii U eShop a great level of recommendation!

Review: The Delusions of Von Sottendorff and his Square Mind (3DS eShop)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Diving Into Madness!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under nindie on Medium13

The Delusions of Von Sottendorff and his Square Mind is by far one of the most bizarre 3DS eShop titles that we've ever reviewed. It's also an incredibly unique experience, but is that all there is to the game? Continue reading our review to find out!

Developed and published by Delirium Studios, the game has you try to escape your home by solving very intricate puzzles. You must connect rooms by moving them around so that the doorway of adjoining rooms line-up! You must then travel between rooms and investigate photographs and other items to regain your sanity!

The gameplay is incredibly fun and addictive and will make you want to play just a little longer everytime it's time to take a break!

Topics tagged under nindie on Medium14

The controls are decent, but not perfect and are sometimes too sensitive and the level of difficulty that the game possesses can become quite fiendishly difficult later in the game, but overall the game is pretty solid in this regard!

The only other issue is the lack of modes, that's right this game only has one mode to play, which would work for some genres, but is rather disappointing in this game's case.

The game is fairly lengthy, clocking in at around 8 hours, which is fairly impressive! Visually the game looks nice for an indie title on the 3DS eShop and the audio is a bit lacklustre, however it's not bad, just a bit disappointing.

Topics tagged under nindie on Large12

Bottom-Line:

With incredibly bizarre, yet highly enjoyable gameplay, great visuals, and a decent amount of content, The Delusions of Von Sottendorff and his Square Mind for the 3DS eShop is a fantastic game worth looking into, however the lack of game modes and somewhat disappointing audio does bring the game down a bit, but overall The Delusions of Von Sottendorff and his Square Mind receives a great level of recommendation from us!

eShop: Dual Core Should Be Hitting The Wii U eShop Soon!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Twin Stick Mayhem!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under nindie on Dual-c10

Gray Fin Studios has announced that they will be submitting their upcoming twin-stick shooter Dual Core to Nintendo very soon so we should expect a release in either February or March of this year!

Here's what Gray Fin Studios had to say about their upcoming title in detail:

Gray Fin Studios wrote:Dual Core is a vibrant, futuristic, “twin-stick” style, shooter, with a strong focus on local co-op multiplayer (up to 4 players). Lots of robots, lots of lasers, lots of aliens, lots of explosions!

The numerous retro arcade influences are front and center, but spiced up with a colorful modern style, a generous helping of sci-fi intrigue, and a dash of RPG ELEMENTS! This isn’t an arena shooter (though there is an arena-style arcade mode); there’s a full story mode with a ton of handcrafted levels to explore, and battle through.

Dual Core has been in development for several years now, and originally was conceived as a mobile/tablet game – however, somewhere along the line, I realized that very few of my favorite games were actually on mobile devices, *most* of them were in fact, on the Wii U, and usually because of the local multiplayer.

So I decided to trust my instincts and that became the focus – our goal is to get players having a blast, working together, laughing, and (occasionally) yelling at the each other! One of my fondest gaming memories was playing co-op Gauntlet as a kid, and that’s still a strong influence today.

But it’s not just multiplayer – even in single player, you don’t play alone; your robot buddy “Corby” sticks with you, and battles by your side through the whole game. So in a way, it’s co-op multiplayer, even when it’s not.

You can watch the official trailer for Dual Core below:

Kicking It Up On U!

Topics tagged under nindie on Kick-f10

Abstraction Games are currently working on porting two more of their games to the Wii U eShop. The first is Kick & Fennick, which previously released on the Playstation Vita. Here's the official overview of the game:

Official Overview wrote:“ Kick & Fennick is a brand new platform adventure about a little boy with a very big gun.

Soon after waking up in a desolate but colorful world, Kick meets a small flying robot named Fennick. When Fennick saves Kick from a menacing guard robot, they find out Fennick’s battery is broken. Together, they embark on an adventure to the Core Tower to find Fennick a new energy core.

Besides shooting down enemy robots, Kick can make huge jumps by using his gun’s powerful recoil. Jump and shoot your way through 45 levels of collapsed skyscrapers, treadmills, bouncypads, magnets, teleporters and that big guard robot who’s never far behind!

Kick & Fennick features colorful 3d graphics, detailed animation, a cinematic camera system and smooth character movement and physics. “

Here's the official trailer for Kick & Fennick below:

Here's the official overview for Devil's Dare:

Official Overview wrote:“Devil’s Dare is a 2D zombie beat’em up, supporting up to 4 players to co-op and fight together locally. Being the spritual successor to Bitejacker, Devil’s Dare carries the same theme of parodies, pitting classic game heroes against monsters straight out of 90s horror movies.

Devil’s Dare doesn’t just relies on grinding and leveling up, but instead introduces permadeath to keep players on their toes. With every kill, the player makes some cash, which you can use to purchase upgrades or save it to revive when you’re dead. When you run out of cash completely, you are dead for good and it’s time to start over again. This is a mechanic inspired by the good old arcade days, where every death meant another penny wasted!

Our main influence were some of Capcom’s classics like Alien vs. Predator, Battle Circuit, Final Fight as well as Sega’s Streets of Rage Series. So if you were a fans of those, give it a shot. I’m sure you will find something to love in Devil’s Dare. “

And finally here's the trailer for Devil's Dare (Below)

eShop: Shutshimi Blasts its way onto the WiiU

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you feel that muscle bound macho men in video games are getting a little old and overdone rejoice, Shutshimi totally isn’t that.
Topics tagged under nindie on  Shutsumi_zpsxzplixfl
Developed by Neon Deity Games and Published by Choice Provisions Shutshimi has players taking on the role of ……..….Muscle Bound Fish???
Yes that’s right Muscle bound fish, Muscle Bound Fish with memory problems, as they protect the seven seas with their “trusty Bullet Morphing Shotguns”. Shutshimi is classic Shoot em up that has players battling waves of enemies, collecting power–ups and battling awesome bosses.
Shutshimi isn’t just another Shump title though as its Ten Second Combat and Upgrade cycles add an extra layer of difficulty and gameplay that sets it apart from similar titles.
The WiiU version of the game will feature Co-op and Off-Tv Play via the Gamepad. Though the game has been released on the PSN Network and Steam for a bit it’s just today that it has been confirmed for WiiU via the games Twitter page. Look for this title to hit the E-shop on February 4th 2016.
Review: Ascent of Kings (Wii U eShop)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Ascending The Metroidvania Ladder!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Topics tagged under nindie on  Wiiu_s37
Developed and published by Nostatic Software Ascent of Kings offers players hardcore retro platforming that can be quite challenging at times, but does that mean that the game is without faults? No, but it certainly is a solid decent game and here's why:
In Ascent of Kings you play the role of a young prince who must climb a sacred mountain to attain kinghood. Your four brothers who set out before you will give you items that will aid you and allow you to progress further into the game! The shrines that are scattered throught the mountain provide your character with health and oxygen upgrades which is will prove to be helpful as well.
Topics tagged under nindie on  630x37
The platforming itself can be tricky at times with hazards and challenging jumps to be made, along with levers, pitfalls, lava, and more that will test your eye-hand coordination as well as your reflexes.
The controls are a quite floaty and somewhat unresponsive, similar to the first Metroid title "though not as bad". The game also features Off-TV-Play and that's a great feature in any game, especially when it functions flawlessly as it does in Ascent of Kings!
Topics tagged under nindie on  630x38
One of the HUGE downfalls of the game is that it's incredibly short, so short in-fact that it can be beaten 100% in less than an hour. The other downfall of this game is the lack of replay value after completing everything in the game. There's no hidden bonuses or easter eggs to unlock which really hurts a Metroidvania style platformer such as this one.
The soundtrack and retro ambience of the game is truly great and is one of the better aspects of the game and visually Ascent of Kings is just oozing with retro goodness, enough said! We truly enjoyed the audio-visual presentation of the game!
Topics tagged under nindie on  630x39
Bottom-Line:
With enjoyable, yet challenging gameplay, excellent controls complete with flawless Off-TV-Play as an option, and a superb audio-visual presentation, Ascent of Kings could have been a truly great game, however the lack of content and replay value seriously hurts our overall opinion of the game. Nonetheless we still enjoyed it a fair amount so Ascent of Kings receives a decent recommendation from us!
Price: $1.99
