Gargoyle's Quest Empty Gargoyle's Quest

I've only reached the very first town in the game, but now I'm unable to venture any further. I tried to cross the bridge multiple times. Which is the only path currently available, but it's impossible to cross. Can anybody please help me head in the right diresction?
