Nintendo of America has revealed Wii, WiiWare and Virtual Console titles will not be playable on the WiiU GamePad. Nintendo is yet to comment on whether or not the transfer process of digital titles from Wii to WiiU will be available on launch.
"Virtual Console transfer process was not confirmed to be available at launch, and would require both systems to be present and an SD card. The transfer process works much in the same way the DSi to 3DS process works today."

At this rate Nintendo will expect us to buy a new controller for each game in the not too distant future

Hopefully it doesn't work 100% like DSi to 3DS, since I have a ton of games that are in the middle of it and DSi erased the gameplay data when transfered to 3DS

Nintendo should've given Club Nintendo member's the option to just link their WiiShop account with their WiiU eShop account. Which would have allowed them to trade in their Wii console towards the cost of the WiiU, and they'd still be able to download all of the games they've already paid for.

You guys are misunderstanding the article says that the games will not be compatible with the Wii U gamepad controller not that they are incompatible with the Wii U.
