Well, after failing to create a general discussion of MTG on Nintendo Life (I have more to discuss than just Avacyn Restored), I decided to start one here. This is the spot for discussion of all things Magic, from favourite cards and favourite sets to favourite characters and...well, anything MTG-related! I'd like to start with a set concept I've devised and would just love to share with you!

A Legend Come to Life

Like most planes in the Multiverse, Earth has its share of legends, those heroes and tales regarded as the greatest of the great. Many of them are either mythical, fictitious, or just misinterpreted. Why, then, is a knight doing battle with a dragon in the middle of a city? Why has a community of elves suddenly appeared in a large forest? Why has an enormous giant started to devastate quaint country towns? For a plane that isn't used to these things being real, it could mean chaos. But for a young man named Zack, this is the kind of fantastic adventure he's always imagined. Together with Aradeus, a 'bird-guy' with amnesia, and Mecordo, a 'dino-guy' who just wants to go home, he'll investigate these mysterious circumstances in order to find a solution...and just maybe, he'll learn a bit about what's to come. Little does he know that a shady figure is following him, with a mysterious agenda that could mean trouble for Zack and his allies...

A new destiny shall emerge...

Somehow this sounds sort of familliar.

Well, I had fun at my first Magic prerelease tournament! Most of my cards were a bit underpowered, but I still managed to place 35th out of 47. And I did get something awesome out of the Helvault - a giant, Commander-sized one of those: http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=240033

Once I build my first Commander deck, I have a pretty good idea who my Commander might be.

It's actually most popular in North America, its continent of origin. Most people here have never even heard of it.

Staroceancrazy, that's because Magic the Gathering died out years ago. It first came out in the early to mid 90's.

Actually, Magic has never been stronger. Multiple products are released every year (four sets, two Duel Decks, a From the Vault collection, a casual multiplayer product and a digital game, amongst other things), and thousands of new and returning players get into it on an annual basis as well. There's professional tournaments, some of them televised, with the chance to win big, and plenty of casual events such as prereleases, release tournaments, game days and Friday Night Magic. Next year is due to be the biggest year yet with the Return to Ravnica block, a revisit of the setting and mechanics of arguably the greatest and most popular Magic block of all time, which means many old players could come rushing back to the game after several years. To say Magic: The Gathering is dead is like saying the same about Mario, or Zelda, or (dare I say) Pokemon. It's thriving to a perpetual degree, hence the reason I've mostly stuck with it since 2003.
