Well, in terms of actual strength, Zed could be considered a little stronger than Brocc, both because of Zed's physique and due to the boon that each of their crystals provides (Zed's crystal apparently shields him from danger, whereas Brocc's boosts his personality, confidence and possibly even his ego).

In terms of magical ability, however, Brocc is definitely more experienced with his bardic magic, especially since Zed has trouble mastering his spells and can only successfully achieve the simplest spells; despite this, Zed is quite advanced for a beginner, and seems to be displaying what Amethyst describes as "an unorthodox method of learning magecraft". It's entirely possible that Zed was already an established novice mage before his past was taken from him, but if that were so then he'd have much better skill with magic than he does now. For now, Zed's past is largely a mystery...
