Review: Shovel Knight Pocket Dungeon (Switch eShop)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For Puzzlery!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under adventure on Screen16

Developed by Vine and Yacht Club Games and published by Yacht Club Games, Shovel Knight: Pocket Dungeon is a unique blend of roguelike, puzzler, RPG, and a bit of adventure gameplay elements that meld together into a highly compelling and ultra enjoyable package and to be honest is every bit as good as the original Shovel Knight title. Continue reading our review to find out why:

Topics tagged under adventure on Screen17

As previously stated, Shovel Knight: Pocket Dungeon's gameplay is a mixture of many different genres blended together in perfect harmony. The roguelike elements add an unpredictable, but fair level of randomness to the puzzler aspect of the game, while the RPG and adventure genre elements allow for a compelling and enjoyable story and feeling of progression for your characters as the gain new skills and abilities from the shop. There are loads of characters in the game to be unlocked, each with their own weapons, skills, and unique gameplay mechanics which adds a lot of replayability to the game.

You can also unlock 10 skins per character and many other things while grinding the game's endless content which is quite enjoyable for completionists. The game also features a Vs. Mode which is a great way to enjoy the game with a friend and had us hooked for hours! The story is relatively short on its own, clocking in at only a handful of hours, but the unlockable content, random nature of the game, and addictive gameplay will keep you coming back for dozens or even hundreds of hours and you'll likely enjoy every single minute of it due to the insane amount of polish this game possesses!

Topics tagged under adventure on Screen19

As for the game's difficulty? It's fair, but has a steep learning curve to master and can take quite a few hours to fully grasp how everything works, but the journey of mastering this game is where a lot of the fun is derived from! The controls are very intuitive and respond very well which obviously is always a good thing!

As for Shovel Knght: Pocket Dungeon's audio-visual presentation, it's a true masterpiece! Great looking overworld? Check! Breathtaking character and enemy designs? Check! Gorgeous and streamlined user interface? Check! And the soundtrack is easily the best of any puzzler we've heard in years as well as arcade-style sound effects that are absolute ear-candy!

Topics tagged under adventure on Screen20

Bottom-Line: With unique and amazing gameplay, excellent controls, and gorgeous visuals, Shovel Knight: Pocket Dungeon will have players hooked right from the start, while the endless replay-value and best soundtrack in the puzzler genre in years will keep players coming back time and time again! We give Shovel Knight: Pocket Dungeon for the Nintendo Switch a perfect-level of recommendation!

Splashing In The Puddles of Childlike Adventures!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Topics tagged under adventure on  Screen13
Published by Joystick Ventures and developed by Happy Juice Games, Lost In Play is a fantastic and whimsical point and click style adventure that REALLY works well on Switch. Continue reading our review to find out why!
Topics tagged under adventure on  Screen14
The gameplay in most point and click games on consoles are done quite wrong using cumbersome cursors that might work well on PC with a mouse, but this seldom translates well when using a controller. Luckily Happy Juice Games designed the game to work by moving your character with the analogue sticks which makes the game feel leagues better than most games in the genre that are ported to home consoles. The controls are responsive and work well in solving the game's many challenging puzzles and beating the handful of minigames as well.
The puzzles are extremely challenging at times and require players to not only problem solve, but also lookout for visual cues that are easy to miss if you aren't paying attention. That said it makes solving the puzzles a very rewarding experience! The only gripe we have is the game is extremely short, even though the puzzles were challenging we managed to be the game in two three hour long sessions, but we thoroughly enjoyed every minute of our playthrough.
Topics tagged under adventure on  Screen15
As for the game's audio-visual presentation, the artwork and characters are absolutely gorgeous and feel as if they were ripped straight out of a child's storybook! The characters have an imaginative and whimsical feel too them and in-general will put a smile on your face as you try to solve the many puzzles in the game. The soundtrack is also cheery and fits the game to a tee.
Topics tagged under adventure on  Screen25
Bottom-Line: With great gameplay, excellent controls, challenging puzzles, and a truly amazing audio-visual presentation, Lost In Play is a near perfect experience on the Nintendo Switch, the only downside is that the game is extremely short and can be beaten in roughly 5-8 hours. Overall we give the game a near-perfect level of recommendation!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

CrossDimensional Fun!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Topics tagged under adventure on  Large_10
Developed by Radical Fish Games, published by Deck 13, and public relations by PR Hound, CrossCode is an action RPG set in a simulated VRMMORPG that pays homage to many classic games in the genre. How does it stack up to other simulated VRMMORPG's or action RPG's in general? Continue reading our review to find out!
Topics tagged under adventure on  Large_11
The gameplay in CrossCode is basically like The Legend of Zelda crossed with a ton of MMO features such as quests, landmarks, fast travel, and other nuances, but the game also focuses on intricate puzzle-solving and some of the puzzles are incredibly difficult even compared to the almighty king of puzzles The Legend of Zelda series. The game's world is quite expansive for a 2-D RPG, but not so big that it becomes a hassle to traverse.
The game is extremely long as well clocking in at a whopping 60-80 hours in length depending on a player's skill level and we mean it when we say this could have been a AAA RPG back during the SNES era, but of course things like MMO's didn't exactly exist during those days, at least not in the capacity that they have existed in for the past 20-22 years so simulated MMO's obviously didn't exist either, but we digress. As for the controls, they are silky smooth, intuitive, and a breeze to learn which is always a good thing!
Topics tagged under adventure on  Large_12
The audio-visual presentation while decidedly retro has a unique style all its own and is very fitting since every other aspect of the game feels like an absolute piece of art. There is no doubt that this game would have been among the most gorgeous looking games during the 16-bit era and even in the modern era of gaming it still looks stylishly amazing! The soundtrack is extremely varied and there aren't any music tracks that we felt weren't amazing. Overall the audio-visual presentation is as close to perfection as possible!
Topics tagged under adventure on  Large_13
Bottom-Line: With a fantastic story, amazing gameplay, excellent controls, a ton of content, and an absolutely perfect audio-visual presentation, there's just no reason not to add CrossCode to your collection of games be it on PS4 or Nintendo Switch! We give the game a nearly perfect level of recommendation!
Review: La-Mulana (Switch eShop)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

A Journey That Any Archeologist Would Absolutely Love!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Topics tagged under adventure on  Waterm28
Developed by Nigoro Games and published by NIS America, La-Mulana is a remake of a 2005 freeware pc title with vastly improved graphics and music and is an enhanced port of the WiiWare and Vita versions of the game. The WiiWare version of the game saw many delays and the previous publisher even cancelled the North American and European releases, luckily EnjoyUp games picked up the game and it was finally released in North America and Europe in 2012. Is this game worth checking out? Continue reading our review to find out!
Topics tagged under adventure on  Waterm29
Story and Gameplay
The story in La-Mulana is fairly important despite how it feels, the story and events often uncover clues to difficult puzzles so the difficulty of the game can vary depending on how well you pay attention to what's going on around you. The game is a platformer that feels a lot like an Indiana Jones meets Metroid style of game with tricky puzzles, platforming, and treasure hunting this game will never leave you bored!
The bosses in the game can be nightmarishly difficult or very easy depending on your weapon choices so be sure to not use up all of a particular sub weapon before fighting the boss of a temple.
A word to the wise collect the item near the start of the game because without it you may need to backtrack or worse yet could end up stuck in a pit or other trap with no way out forcing you to reset the game!
Topics tagged under adventure on  Waterm30
Also avoid a particular item in The Temple of The Giants that will literally tell you not to open it and if you don't heed this warning the game will unleash Anubus like reapers everywhere that are virtually immortal and can one-hit K-O you regardless of how much health you possess and it will remain like this for the rest of the game making it nigh impossible for all, but the most skilled players to beat. We left this out in our previous reviews of La-Mulana, but we thought to ourselves, who doesn't like a free tip?
A unique feature in La-Mulana is the .EXE system that grants you power-ups from .EXE files that can be found, but your cpu memory is limited so don't expect to use every good .EXE file you find at the same time.
The game is very long and can easily take more than 40 hours to beat, but can take over 80 hours for completionists to collect every item and fully explore every area in the game which is absolutely incredible!
Topics tagged under adventure on  Waterm31
Graphics and Music
The graphics in the Nintendo Switch port have been slightly improved over the WiiWare and Vita versions of the game as the details are breath-taking as every single area looks not only beautiful, but also completely unique with so many background objects and enemy designs you'll wonder how Nigoro put so much detail into a retro-styled MetroidVania!
The soundtrack is quite possibly the most impressive feature of La-Mulana as there are easily 50+ music tracks in the game and every one of them sounds like something straight from a PS1 platformer! How Nigoro managed this we'll never know, but you won't hear a better sounding CD quality 8-bit soundtrack very often on the eShop!
Topics tagged under adventure on  Waterm32
The Switch Difference: The Switch version comes with the usual handheld mode upgrade which is done really well with little to no difference in frame-rate or visual quality. There is a negative and that is the Joycons' abysmal d-pad which is extremely cumbersome in this game. If you play on Switch either the handheld exclusive Switch Lite or Switch Pro Controller is recommended.
Bottom Line
With fun, yet challenging gameplay and unrivaled retro graphics and soundtrack, La-Mulana is as fun as ever and with the added features as well as a boss rush and time trials mode as well as great arcade borders to replace the black bars on your screen, and the handheld mode on Switch is superb with little to no drops in frame-rate or graphical quality, however the Joycon d-pad will prove frustrating to those without a Switch Pro Controller or Switch Lite. The addition of being able to play on-the-go with no reduction in the quality of the gameplay is what really gives this version a leg-up over the others and as such we give La-Mulana for the Nintendo Switch a nearly perfect level of recommendation to all Switch owners who enjoy a challenging MetroidVania!
Review: Disaster Report 4 (PS4 Retail)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Cataclysmic Devastation!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Topics tagged under adventure on  Large_20
Developed by Granzella Inc and published by NIS America, Disaster Report 4 is a disaster survival game where every choice you make affects the game's story and you are always one wrong choice away from certain death. Does this game deserve praise or should it be passed up? Continue reading our review to find out the answer to this all-important question!
Topics tagged under adventure on  Large_21
The gameplay in Disaster Report 4 is basically that of a survival horror game, except instead of surviving against the supernatural, you must survive a series of natural disasters. It's all there, limited inventory, tools, first aid kits, etc. The dangers are always present and a keen sense of your surroundings is paramount if you don't want to die a horrific death in the game. Helping others can be very helpful later on as they may well save your life later on in the game, but on the other hand they can pose a threat to you if they are less than honorable people. This system of decision making is what makes Disaster Report 4 so great and we truly appreciated the effort Granzella Inc put into these little details in the game!
The UI can be a bit confusing at times and the controls aren't flawless, but they're good enough that we didn't dock any points from the final score of the game. As for the audio-visual presentation, it's pretty good the characters are pretty detailed, the special effects are realistic enough and the sound effects are top-notch and make you feel like you're really in Japan during a mega disaster!
Topics tagged under adventure on  Large_22
Bottom-Line: With amazing gameplay, good controls, and an above average audio-visual presentation, Disaster Report 4 is a game that every gamer should at least try out and was a amazing experience from beginning to end! As such we give Disaster Report 4 for the PS4 a great level of recommendation!
Luigi's Funsion!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under adventure on Luigi210

Hey there gamers, Bre here with another fun packed game review! Luigi’s Mansion 3 is a fun filled game that brings back the story of our friends Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Toad but giving the story a twist while also featuring the location of our favorite haunted mansion! Our friends this time have found themselves invited onto a fun packed vacation at a resort, but little do they know trouble lies ahead for them! Once at the resort they are met by the hotel owner who’s appearance seems a bit off from the start, and the staff themselves are a bit odd, but hey when isn’t there something odd going on within the Mushroom Kingdom? Our friends get settled into their rooms, but just when it seems they are finally going to get a good vaction things take a turn for the dark side! King Boo is back! And this time he has the help of the hotel owner and the staff!

Topics tagged under adventure on 57048810

King Boo has captured Mario, Peach, and the Toads and now it’s up to you and Luigi to get them back! This game is full of a multi-level story mode with puzzles and twists around every corner, and along with it comes back our Gooigi! That’s right you get to play as not only Luigi but Gooigi and the lovable pup Polterpup! It’s up to you to now explore the hotel obtaining objects for Professor E. Gadd and dismantling the ghosts throughout the hotel. Along with a multi-level story mode comes a fun loving multiplayer mode for you and friends featuring Gooigi himself! The things I love the most about this game is the way that it keeps you on your seat around every corner and every floor constantly needing to figure out what will come next! If you have not played this game make sure you do, I give it a great level of recommendation! I can’t wait to finish this game and see what comes next!

Topics tagged under adventure on Luigi410

Pros to this game: Full of puzzles and twists on every floor, multiplayer mode, and features numerous characters!

Cons to this game: I would of liked to see a bit more multiplayer content.

Until next time gamers keep gaming!

Review: Paper Mario: Color Splash ( Wii U Retail )

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Amazing, But What Happened To Paper Mario?!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under adventure on Wiiu_s24

Developed and published by Nintendo, Paper Mario: Color Splash is an amazing 3-D platformer?! with JRPG and adventure genre gameplay elements, but does it live up to its true roots as a standout JRPG series? Not quite, but the game is still superb in its own rights and here's why!

Topics tagged under adventure on Large10

The story in Paper Mario Color Splash for the Wii U is pretty funny albeit relatively non-existent which is the first of several disappointing aspects of the game, but in spite of these flaws the game is still absolutely superb! The gameplay in Color Splash is fairly straightforward, restore color to the world with you paint hammer, defeat enemies with cards, explore the various courses, and save the day. The battles are a blast to play unlike those in Sticker Star, with much more depth and strategy involved.

The world itself is separated into individual levels and there are dozens of courses in the game. Despite not being heavily story-driven, the game is still well over 25 hours in length which is pretty sizable. The controls are also silky smooth and easy to learn which is always a good thing! The game is well-balanced for the most part so don't expect any radical difficulty spikes. And lastly the Gamepad features include some touchscreen controls as well as off-TV play which is always welcome in our opinions!

Topics tagged under adventure on 900x_210

There's one more gameplay aspect we're dying to talk about and that is the boss battles which are an absolute blast to play and typically have some sort of gimmick associated with them. Usually gimmicks are not a positive when it comes to core gameplay elements, but the boss battles handle these very well in Color Splash! There is one thing that has left us scratching our heads though and that is the complete lack of unique characters and enemies in the game which has always been a staple of the franchise.

Topics tagged under adventure on 900x_111

The audio-visual of in Paper Mario Color Splash is absolutely breathtaking with gorgeous character designs and unique and vibrant locations that look like they were taken straight from a gorgeous work of art or a vibrant picture book. The soundtrack is equally amazing with many iconic songs beautifully remixed in this game! Overall the audio-visual presentation is complete perfection!

Topics tagged under adventure on 900x_310

Bottom-Line: With a simple yet funny story, excellent gameplay, intuitive controls, and an amazing audio-visual presentation, Paper Mario Color Splash for the Wii U is a superb game for the console that is only marred by the fact that it continues to be too different from its roots as a top-notch RPG series, but regardless we give the game a great level of recommendation to all Wii U owners!

Review: Bonfire (PSVR)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Let’s turn up the heat in these dark woods or something?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under adventure on Bonfir10

Bonfire is a very short virtual reality game made by “Baobab”, it starts off in space where the main character has awoken from hyper sleep because he is a scout meant to look for other planets that can be inhabited by the human race because humanity made earth uninhabitable with their destruction and use of the planet's resources, so you crash-land into the planet and then make a bonfire alongside your ship's navigation computer AI.

Topics tagged under adventure on Bonfir11

Basically it’s a very short narrative adventure that you can interact with and is only about 15-20 minutes in length give or take a minute or two. The art style is cute and the game has nice voice acting as well. The story is kind of nice as well, but again it’s WAY too short. There are some interactions that the game will do for you if you don’t do anything during them. You can also play through it multiple times for some minor changes in what the AI says but that’s about it

Topics tagged under adventure on Bonfir12

Bottom-Line: [i]We give Bonfire a solid level of recommendation because it was well made and the art style and voices were nice, but it was too short for our tastes, and while there were interactions they were a bit limited. If what you seek is a cute small interaction-based adventure for PSVR, you will likely enjoy this game, however if you are not into these types of games I recommend skipping it entirely. It’s cute, but it's most likely one of those games you pick up once and will never play it again. It does have easy trophies so if you are a trophy hunter this is an easy platinum to earn!

Review: My Time At Portia (PS4 PSN)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Extravagant Abode?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under adventure on Ap_3d710

My Time at Portia, released on April 16, has been well received by the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One communities alike.  It has several points that make it an excellent game.  Do you think you’ll enjoy it?  We think so and here’s why.

Topics tagged under adventure on Ap_c8c10

Developed by Pathea and published by Team17, My Time at Portia is a relaxing yet highly addictive game.  This crafting sim has several activities to keep you busy throughout your gameplay, from crafting to farming and many more in between.

Starting out with Pa’s inheritance of the workshop, you’re thrust into the world of Portia at a fairly good clip.  The tutorials are very simple, and the controls are extremely easy to figure out.  After chatting with Presley, you learn you must register your workshop in order to accept commissions, which is the lifeblood of this game as far as its currency, gols, along with earning relationships with your fellow townspeople.  There is the main storyline, and it’s entertaining but feels slow at times.  It’s not enough to sway one from the game, however.

As the game goes by, the missions become increasingly difficult along with relationships harder to earn. They aren’t insurmountable, but they do take a bit of strategy and finesse at times.  New areas of the map open up as you complete your tasks, which lead to more opportunities for your character to flourish.

Topics tagged under adventure on Ap_b2010

Now to the very integral part of the game: your workshop.  This is what the game revolves around.  You need it in basically each mission you attempt along with upgrading it.  Your missions are based upon certain levels of machinery, and the quests will not progress until you reach that milestone. It’s not impossible, just time-consuming.

The devs have been extremely helpful and polite to the community, listening to their complaints and promising full game content in the near future. Their communication is unique as far as a dev goes, but this is another aspect which makes the game great.

Now to the cons.  There have been bugs reported by players, ranging from ridiculous to game-breaking.  They are few and far between, but when they rear their ugly heads, you typically have to leave the area and start again.  The hopeful part is the devs are aware of this and are working diligently on a patch.

Some of the timed missions don’t specify they have a strict time constraint unless you open your mission book and review the quest.  There were several times when I had the dreaded failed quest announcement flash across my screen, so it was only logical to restart the day.  With the knowledge of the timer, the quests can quickly be completed in the allotted time.

Relationships take a long time to attain, but it isn’t hopeless.  There are many different levels of gifting for each player, points determined by the type of gift you give the NPC. Between fostering these relationships and carrying on with your missions or free play, the player won’t run out of things to do.

Topics tagged under adventure on Ap_49810

The graphics are in a soft 3D style, which adds to the peaceful feeling that the game has. Sometimes the rendering is comical, but all-in-all they are deemed pleasant.  The audio is another story. When you start playing, it’s interesting and enjoyable.  However, when you have a few hours in, the soundtrack becomes very monotonous.  A more ranged soundtrack would have been welcome in My Time at Portia.

Topics tagged under adventure on Ap_3d710

Overall, the pros definitely outweigh the cons.  The fact that the devs are hard at work devising a patch makes this game more attractive.  Taking the entire impression of MyTime at Portia, we give this game good level of recommendation!

Afternote: Team17 released the update for My Time at Portia this past week (May 23) and like many gamers that play, I am very pleased with the updates and bug fixes that were plaguing random players.  While there are more updates promised, this one nipped the infinite loading bug and seemed to have solved the disappearing item bug as well.  The graphics are more pleasing since the patch with additions to the load screen and subtle differences in gameplay.  New quests and small improvements to existing content were added, making the game feel more rounded.  You can view full information on the update here.

Review: The Wizards ~ Enhanced Edition (PSVR)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Solid Wizardry!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under adventure on 48611110

It is time! time to mage-up and uhm time-up… never mind! Ok here's our review for The Wizards: Enhanced Edition for the PSVR which is developed and published by Carbon Studios. OK so the game starts you out as an apprentice of sorts wanting to learn magic from a wizard, but the wizard who speaks to you doesn’t have a body, so he begins with a small tutorial explaining the basic fireball spell and shield spell. After the tutorial is finished you get introduced to your study or hub world if you will.

Topics tagged under adventure on 48611210

Basically you have 3 things you can do there. The main part which is a map were u chose the stage you want to go to, the table were you power up your spells and learn new one's. You can also test your spells as well. There's another table with a large sort of a sink? I'm not sure how to describe it, but it's basically water and a bunch of hands holding balls of colors and if you drop a ball into the water you can dip your hand and paint your hand the color you want for fun we guess.

You also have a fireplace were you can burn a book just for giggles.  Also while you on the map choosing a stage you have the option to insert a card into the stage that changes certain things like enemies have more hp or enemies are weaker, you only start with a few but as you progress you will find chest with a new card in it basically to alter the stage for a more challenging experience.

Now every stage has 3 hidden gems that you use in order to power up your spells and also depending how you fight you get scored on that but we honestly are not quite sure what determines a good score. In the end its just for a leader board thing, unless you’re into being number one on the leader board you don’t have to worry about that.

Now regarding the story, we found it ok, but nothing that really wowed us. Basically you travel through time and save certain time periods from monster and some sorcerer who's casting an evil spell. The somewhat troublesome thing thar I noticed is that it’s a little bit too linear in the sense that there no monster around the map you just explore get trapped and have to beat monsters and survive in order to proceed, I was hoping for a little more interaction or to make it more lively but the stages continue same way, explore, get trapped, defeat enemies, continue. However we did find fighting bosses interesting.

The game also has an arena mode, but it really doesn’t add anything all that exciting and like the campaign mode it has the same spells and you power up the spells by getting tokens which you get by playing in the arena and getting good scores, the arena has 3 modes, one where you defend pinewood from monsters while remaining in one spot only without moving, other mode is red crystals spawn around the map and you have to destroy them cause if more than 8 or 9 get damaged over time you lose, and the last one has you defending 3 giant crystals from monster attacks, the pinewood stage is the hardest because you can’t move, just shoot spells left and right and kill monster before they reach the town, the one with the red crystal was so easy and boring that I let the monster just kill me.

It was like 3 to 4 minutes of destroying crystals over and over again while completely ignoring the monster chasing us. And the last one is sort of like the pinewood one only that this time you moved over a large map while defending 3 crystals. Our main problem with the arena is that there’s no music, at least nothing that would get you motivated all the time you’re going to hear constant grunts from the enemy. You can also use and receive card like in campaign mode.

 Topics tagged under adventure on 48611410

Visually the game looks really nice and has the option to play standing or sitting and adjusting heights to a certain height you can even changed it from teleporting to just walking or both, you can even change how you turn if you do sharp instant turns or slowly turn which you can also adjust the speed in which you turn, but personally I got more dizzy slowly turning than instant sharp turns.

Topics tagged under adventure on 48611513

Good things:

1: It looks visually nice

2: It’s quite fun to cast spells doing gestures

3: Has a good variety of control adjustments like for sitting or standing and  how it changes, how you turn which is very nice

4: Fighting bosses with magical spells feels pretty cool

Bad things:

1: Story is not very entertaining after a while

2: Too much repeat of the same explore a little get trapped, fight and continue.

3: Needs more spells the amount is not bad but it gets pretty repetitive quickly.

4: Needs better music especially in arena it just doesn’t motivate me and I personally don’t care about leader boards.

Topics tagged under adventure on 48611610

Overall I give the game a good level of recommendation. It’s not a bad game, but it could be better, however it’s about the norm for a VR game, I also didn’t comment on the PS Move controller detection cause I don’t have a lot of space where I live so I have to make do but the detection was good just had a few problems with the height making things to low or to high but I think that was more my problem with camera placement than the game. Also for those who care about leader board it should detail better how well you score.

Review: Evoland Legendary Edition (PS4 PSN)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Legendary Voyage!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under adventure on 111

Developed and published by Shiro Games, Evoland: Legendary Edition is a series of two retro-style action-RPG's that are heavily inspired by classics such as The Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, Metroid, Mario, Diablo, and many, many more series. But does this live up to the series that are the source inspirations for the game? Not quite, but it's still an amazing set of games nonetheless. Continue reading our review to find out why we enjoyed the game so much!

Topics tagged under adventure on Evolan10

The story of the Evoland games are actually quite good and have tons of references from classic characters, to anime and western cartoons, and even non-animated programs. The characters in the games are quite lovable, but the one's in Evoland II are by and far more complex and relatable. The gameplay is pretty interesting as well. In the first game you basically start off in a world reminiscent to an original Gameboy title, but as you progress your game will evolve to become more and more modern, mostly by finding the upgrades through treasure chests.

The second game handles this differently, the game has a time-travelling theme with each era in time representing a different era in gaming. Both games also have different gameplay styles and elements that represent different classic series such as The Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy, and more and at times you'll face turn-based battles, platforming segments, and more in this short, but sweet duo of quests!

Topics tagged under adventure on 310

The first Evoland is extremely short clocking in at around five to six hours in length while the second Evoland title is far longer clocking in at just under fifteen hours in length. It'll likely take around forty hours to earn the platinum trophy for the game. The game can be quite brutal on the hardest difficulty setting as well, but on the easy setting it is an absolute cakewalk so the standard difficulty is recommended for most first-time players of the game.

The controls are also superb which is always a good thing. The audio-visual presentation is absolutely incredible in Evoland as not only do the visuals and soundtrack perfectly reflect every era of gaming, and look AAA quality for each era save for a few exceptions. Speaking of the soundtrack it is quite catchy and enjoyable and fits the game perfectly.

Topics tagged under adventure on Evolan11

Bottom-Line: With an enjoyable story, excellent gameplay and controls, and an incredible audio-visual presentation with only a few minor exceptions in the visual department. The only other complaint we have with the games are the fact that they are extremely short, especially the first Evoland title, but otherwise the game is amazing! We give Evoland: Legendary Edition a great level of recommendation.

A Massive Disappointment Like The ill-Fated Titanic...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Topics tagged under adventure on  900x
Developer: Soul Pix.
Publisher: Soul Pix.
Ok let’s review this game, when I played the demo for this game I was excited and intrigued because it seemed like a game were you would need to survive and would need to venture out and find many means of survival. However after playing the full game after 3 hours or so it all went downhill, let me explain, basically you start in a sort of drop ship falling down to a planet and it seems while in mid air you were in the process from awakening cause you were asleep but the drop ship gets torn apart and it crash lands. After landing you get attack by a monster that flies and you quickly get out, you are then greeted by a little robot or drone that got damaged in the crash and can’t remember his name or purpose and your character can’t remember anything either all he has is a photo of him and his wife and son.
Topics tagged under adventure on  900x
Essentially the drone explains the basic controls of how to use him to scout places, that in order to control him you need to be inside a ring the creates a barrier that protects you from harm, that’s basically how the entire game works you walk a little, get stuck by a wall or something similar and you have to look for a “safe zone” activate it and then use the drone who calls himself newton  and always find 3 energy core to boost his shockwave and even thought he tells you  that you only get 3 shot to brake the wall, it’s so simple and easy you had to be a complete moron to miss the shot on a big wall and even if you shoot it in 1 shot the other 2 just disappear.
As you progress in the game the main character starts getting flash backs of his past revealing what has happened.  Now the biggest problem with this game aside from the graphics which most of the time all you ever going to see is dirt and metal is that the game practically holds your hands throughout the entire game and it’s so linear there is little to nothing to explore whenever you control Newton its 90% of the time is to look for 3 energy cores to blast something out of the way with one shot which basically makes the other 2 cores useless.
The game also moves extremely slowly even when running it looks slow, and then there are part were the monster who sort of look like dragons are everywhere and you have to sneak by them which makes the game move slower.
Topics tagged under adventure on  900x
 The story is actually pretty boring, basically the story is that the humans built an ark, a ship to travel to another planet because it seemed that their home planet was messed up and can no longer live there and to manage the ark they made a supercomputer with an AI called mother she was suppose to keep the human in cryo stage and drive the ark to a new planet, however since she had the ability to think for herself she studied the humans and their nature and decided that humans are a plague and they don’t deserve to live except the main character so she decided to create her own human and tried to program them to act the way she wanted but before that when the main character was put in a cryo state she had put something in the liquid of the pod to induce amnesia.
Also  at some point the main character got out of the pot and opened a gate which let out the artificial humans mother had created and they ended up worshiping mother like some goddess but she didn’t want that so she decided to drive the ark into the sun but she needed the genetic code that was in the main characters blood to have that authority in the ship so she hacked the drones and send them to hunt him, newton since he was created by the main character wasn’t affected at first so after you finally get inside the ship you end up giving the blood sample anyway to go further into the ship, meet mother, end up giving her the authorization she needed and then tricking her in order to shut her down , then the artificial humans appear through a gate you open and give the main character a key to stop the ship from going into the sun however they didn’t know what the object did since they had little knowledge of technology, and that’s the only moment you speak with a person in the last 5 min of the game, after you stop the command of the ark, your characters passes out and then wakes up on a ship with the artificial humans and one of them is holding the picture of his family and  says I think know where the wife is and that’s it the game ends there with a “the end”.  The story was too generic and disappointing and I tried to summarize most of it because it left a lot of unanswered questions
Topics tagged under adventure on  900x
Bottom-Line: The game did have objects you can get in certain places but everything looks the same and so boring that I didn’t bother to look I just occasionally found some. Also this game uses the ps4 controller not the PSmove. So I give Eden Tomorrow a poor level of recommendation due to the boring story, having little freedom to really explore and the game being completely linear while holding your hand. The camera was fine, however.
Link To The Amazing!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under adventure on Wiiu_s13

Developed and published by Nintendo, The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past returns to the formula that the original game in the series utilized, but adds to it in many ways and all of which are positive improvements! Continue reading our review to find out why we think you should add this retro game to your Wii U Virtual Console collection of games!

Topics tagged under adventure on Wiiu_s14

The story in ALTTP is by and far better than the one that the original The Legend of Zelda title had and showed that RPG's weren't the only genre that could be epic in this regard! The gameplay while similar to that of the NES original added quite a few changes such as eight-way movement, much more complex equipment, weapon and equipment upgrades, and even an entire second world.

The game is also quite lengthy for an SNES game that's not a JRPG, clocking in at over 20 hours in length! The controls are also easy to learn which is always a good thing! Another good thing is the game runs much better on the Wii U than it did on the original Wii with far less stuttering and frame-rate drops.

Topics tagged under adventure on Wiiu_s15

The controls in the game are quite good, but we highly recommend using the Wii Classic Controller Pro for the best experience. The game's Off-TV play is executed perfectly with a great balance in its sound-level and ALTTP looks absolutely gorgeous on the Wii U Gamepad.

The audio-visual presentation is also superb with gorgeous cartoonish graphics that are exceptionally detailed for an SNES title, and the animations are fluid with rarely any dropped frames. The soundtrack is also pure bliss with catchy chiptunes and surprisingly good sound effects!

Topics tagged under adventure on Wiiu_s16

Bottom-Line: With an amazing and lengthy story , excellent gameplay, great controls, and a nearly flawless audio-visual presentation, The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past has aged gracefully and is just as fun today as it was when it was released well over 25 years ago! The better frame-rate compared to the Wii Virtual Console release makes this the most definitive re-release of the game thus-far! We give The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past for the Wii U Virtual Console a perfect level of recommendation!

A Frightening Tale of Friendship & Togetherness!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Topics tagged under adventure on  YomawariHaru-noscale
Developed by Nippon Ichi Software and published by Nis America, Yomawari: Midnight Shadows is a creepy game that proves that friendship can overcome anything, with a heartfelt premise like that it must be a fantastic game, right? Continue reading the rest of our review to find out!
Topics tagged under adventure on  20171025203930_1-noscale
The story of Yomawari: Midnight Shadows follows two girls trapped in a nightmarish hell where ghosts and other supernatural creatures are running rampant in their hometown. They must reunite and work together for there to be any hope for them to figure out what has happened to their town and to survive. The gameplay and settings in Yomawari: Midnight Shadows are surprisingly eerie and gave us plenty of jump-scares during the course of the game.
Basically the flashlight you obtain early on in the game allows you to see spirits and other dangers, however you can't fight them and instead must hide until the creatures or spirits who spotted you give up their search. This stealth element is pretty enjoyable, but doesn't always work if a certain creature knows where you are so it's best to get a little distance between you and the immediate threat before hiding if at all possible. There are times where certain key items are needed to distract certain spirits or ghosts, but if you are an old-school gamer this will pose little to no problems at all.
Topics tagged under adventure on  469143-YomawariMidnightShadows
The controls in the game are straightforward and easy to learn while the difficulty can be quite unforgiving if you aren't used to  retro-style stealth-based adventure games. The game is fairly short as we beat the game in under 10 hours though it might be possible that we didn't fully explore the game's areas. The game is PSTV compatible which is always a plus in our opinions!
The audio-visual presentation is superb as expected from Nippon Ichi Software! The pixel art is flawless, the dim lighting adds to the eeriness of the game, especially if you play the game with the lights off in your room as the developer intended.  The character and enemy models as well as the world itself look gorgeous as Nippon Ichi put alot of love and attention into the intricate details that give this game and series a distinct level of uniqueness that will leave a lasting impression.
The soundtrack is mostly ambient, but it really adds to the eeriness of the game. It might not be all that memorable, but it's still nice to hear nonetheless. Some of the sound effects such as screams, heartbeats, and other spooky sounds really add to the overall experience we had with the game!
Topics tagged under adventure on  20171025200545_1-noscale
Bottom-Line:
With great gameplay, flawless controls, and a fantastic audio-visual presentation, Yomawari: Midnight Shadows will draw you in from beginning to end with it's spooky gameplay and charming visuals. If you're a fan of retro adventure games this is a must-have! We give Yomawari: Midnight Shadows for Vita a good level of recommendation!
A Walk On The Wild Side!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under adventure on 900x

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild is a fantastic open-world adventure game that completely reinvents the franchise. And while it's an excellent title it feel like it's lost some of that Zelda magic. Despite this we still feel the game is one of the best titles in the franchise. Continue reading our review to find out why!

Topics tagged under adventure on 900x

Breath of The Wild is an open-world adventure game and possesses a massive world with tons of secrets and hidden areas to explore and despite being much smaller in scale than Xenoblade Chronicles X, Nintendo did a fantastic job with the topography of the world in the game to make you truly feel like an explorer! This is the game's greatest strength, however it's also its greatest weakness as well since the game nearly does away with complex puzzle solving and dungeons in favor of smaller and easier shrines.

These mini dungeons number in the 100's, but are substantially simpler than a typical dungeon in the Zelda series. With the exception of this, however Breath of The Wild is a fantastic entry in the series and other aspects such as the story-telling as well as sidequests and pseudo guild quests are superb and will keep you entertained for many hours!

Topics tagged under adventure on 900x

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild is also the first game in the Zelda series to have full voice acting in most of the important story scenes which gives a breath of fresh air to the narrative of the game! The difficulty of the game is fairly easy for the most part, though it can become somewhat challenging at times. For those who want a challenge, there's a difficulty setting for that! The item scavenging and pet system are extremely rich and can make exploration extremely fun for completionists!

You can also cook and craft items in the game as well. This system is somewhat limited, but is enjoyable nonetheless! The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild is also by far the longest game in the Zelda series clocking in at over 300 hours to complete one hundred percent!

Topics tagged under adventure on 900x

The controls in the game a flawless and are a piece of cake to learn which is always a very good thing. The visuals in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild are absolutely gorgeous and even give Xenoblade Chronicles X a run for its money in-terms of the best looking Wii U games! The environments as well as the character/enemy models are intricately detailed and the Cel-Shading gives the game a breathtaking art-direction unlike anything we've ever seen before!

The soundtrack is also absolutely flawless with fully orchestrated dynamic tracks that not only fit the mood of the game, but also change in rhythm and tempo depending on what's happening around Link which adds to the game's atmosphere!

Topics tagged under adventure on 900x

The Switch Difference:

Besides a slightly higher resolution and better frame rate on the Nintendo Switch version when docked both games are nearly identical. The only difference we can think of is that the Switch port has better textures and object models, but overall you'll have an amazing experience with the game regardless of which console you play it on!

Topics tagged under adventure on 900x

Bottom-Line:

With an incredible story, superb gameplay, and flawless controls, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild will draw any Wii U or Switch owners to the game while the unparalleled audio-visual presentation will keep players coming back time and time again. Honestly the only drawback that the game has is that it is too different from the other games in the series, however in-terms of open-world games, Breath of The Wild is in a league of its own which is why we give the game a perfect level of recommendation to any and all Switch and Wii U owners!

Developed by LookAtMyGame and published by Aksys Games Chronicles of Teddy: Harmony of Exidus is an Adventure-Platformer in the veins of Zelda II for the NES or the Wonder Boy series. The game was originally nearly broken when it launched on the Wii U eShop, but was quickly patched "at least in North America" so what do we think of the title now that it's been patched? Continue reading our review to find out the answer to that question:

The gameplay in Chronicles of Teddy is very polished and enjoyable, with enough content to be considered a full retail release! There are four main dungeons chock full of unique enemies and bosses as well as several smaller mini-dungeons to test your wits! The game has quite a steep difficulty spike near the end so expect to get stumped!

A unique element of the game is that you communicate and solve puzzles using a unique musical instrument in the game. In fact if used cleverly enough you can even get past certain bosses without even having to face them, which is a really cool feature in our opinions! You can also find new powers to progress further into the game's world after completing each dungeon.

The game's controls are quite tight and are easy as pie to learn which is always a very important factor for any game! The Off-TV-Play is always a welcome feature, as is the option to use any one of a plethora of controllers such as the Classic Controller Pro, Wii U Pro Controller, and of course the Gamepad!

Visually the game is gorgeous with colorful and cheery backgrounds, unique character and enemy models, and splendidly awesome bosses that really add to the overall experience and the sound-track is equally as enjoyable! You won't hear a single complaint about the audio-visual presentation from us, however the patch that fixed various freezing problems and issues that caused the audio to permanently cut-out in North America has not been released in Europe at the time that we published this article so expect a vastly inferior experience if you're a European gamer...

Bottom-Line:

With great gameplay, solid controls, and an excellent audio-visual presentation, Chronicles of Teddy: Harmony of Exidus is a top-notch eShop adventure that no Wii U owner should skip, unless of course you're a European gamer since the gamebreaking glitches haven't been patched up yet in the region. The game is a meek 2/10 in Europe in our opinions, however the fully functional North American version gets a great level of recommendation from us!

Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to take part in
this interview!

[RWG]: Of course!

Could you tell us a bit about your team who worked tirelessly to
develop 8-Bit Hero?

[RWG]: I was actually the only developer on the game! I programmed it, made the art, and put it all together. I really do have my brother to thank for a lot of the level layout in various sections of the game, as well as a friend from school who made two of the levels.

As I was coming close to the finish line, I really was getting burnt out so I needed someone to help me finish up the last couple of remaining levels, and my friend did a great job.

How long did it take to develop 8-Bit Hero?

[RWG]: Actually working on it, it took about 3 months. I started it back in September of 2015, worked on it for about 2 weeks, and then needed to take a break for school. My brother continued working on level layout. Once January of 2016 rolled around, I got back to working on it. The game was completed in the end of February, but it took a few months to get it ready for publishing.

What games inspired you to create 8-Bit Hero?

[RWG]: Definitely the Zelda series, Mario, and any old-school punishing arcade game.

What is so unique about 8-Bit Hero? What sets it apart from other
action-adventure titles?

[RWG]: Mainly the "art" style. The 3D pixel art is something I was playing around with and thought looked pretty cool. There's really not a whole lot that sets it apart from other action-adventure titles, and I know that. I took on the project as a challenge to further my ability to finish titles that I start working on.

I've always had the issue of starting new projects, working on them for a time, and then starting something new. I needed to change that, which is why I created this pretty simple adventure game. I knew I would be able to finish it on my own without much issue.

Why did you decide to add co-op multiplayer to your game?

[RWG]: By the time I started the project back up in January, I kept playing it and thinking, "yeah, I know I was going for simple for finishing reasons, but this is way too simple." So I then added 2-player co-op.

When that was ready, I started testing it with a friend, and he thought it was really fun, so he dared me to make it 5 player by the next day. Once I was done with that, I got excited about adding new playable characters, and things just took off from there.

The music is fantastic! Who composed the tunes in the game?

[RWG]: I composed all of the music and created all of the sound effects for the game.

Are there any secrets or easter eggs in 8-Bit Hero to keep an eye out for?

[RWG]: Pretty much any time you find one of those hidden shops that pops up from the ground, or secret gems and armour, is a nod to old-fashioned NES games. The old-school games had so many random secrets that most people would never find, which I always thought was hilarious!

We think that's everything we wanted to ask! Thanks again for
answering our questions, hopefully we'll have the opportunity to
interview you again sometime!

[RWG]: Of course! Looking forward to it.

Take care!

[RWG]: You too!

Visual Novel x Adventure!

Circle Entertainment has announced through a PR email that their 3DS title Parascientific Escape: Cruise In The Distant Sea will be hitting the North American and European 3DS eShops tomorrow! The game looks to be a visual novel with heavy adventure genre elements throughout the game! Here's the official overview of the game:

Overview wrote:Hitomi Akeneno is a 16 year old high school student with a little secret - she has not one, but two psychic powers.

After receiving an invitation, she boards a luxury cruise ship with her friend, Chisono Shio. As soon as she enters a suite room, a loud explosion sounds…and she finds herself stuck, unable to get out. Is this an accident? Or something far more sinister…?

The only way to find out is to escape, with the help of her powers.
