Sonic Mania Plus
Sonic Team
Review for PS4, also available on Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series S&X, Steam
Release: August 15th 2017 (Mania original release)
(Plus Version Release) July 17th 2018
Revisit the Past : Introduction
What happened after 3 & Knuckles? Something the fandom was wondering for years. Well worry no more, as Mania answers that question. But also creates a branching journey that is filled with "timey wimey wibbly wobbly" adventures across time and space.
Retrofuturism : visuals and art design
Using a blend of classic levels, with a new array of stages that were not possible back on the Genesis. Mania feels like a lost Sega CD, or Sega Saturn game. But it compliments the past, with colorful levels, and environments that flow with gameplay perfectly.
Retrofunk : music, and audio
The opening theme song was made by Hyper Potions, the song is called "Friends". Plus they worked on an additional release, for one of the trailer songs called "Checkpoint".
Mania's soundtrack is composed by legendary artist Tee Lopes. Inspired by games of the past, the music fuses future funk, house, hip-hop, and more genres creating one of the best soundtracks of all time. From Green Hill Zone, to Studiopolis and beyond, the music is so good.
Press A to jump : Controls
Just like the classic games, button input and response is super accurate. Mania plays exactly like a Genesis game. Also you can customize your controls if you like.
For the Mania, by the Mania : Closing thoughts
Sonic Mania if a handcrafted work of art. It is literally a lost game from the past, that deserved to be made. A celebration made by fans, for the fans. It is a must own in your gaming library.
Extra note: the animation, and art sequence throughout the game are made by the lovely folks at Powerhouse Animation.
