Sonic Team
Release: June 23rd, 2022
Available on: Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, XSS & XSX, Steam
Level One : Introduction
In the beginning, it was good. The SEGA Genesis was challenged by the Nintendo Entertainment System. Long ago, they battled. But somehow Sonic & friends, found a way to find a path for themselves. On June 23rd, 1991. The Blue Hedgehog paved the way for action/adventure games, and evolved gaming design. Utilizing "blast processing", every game pushed the system capabilities in visuals, and sound design. Plus the controls were built to take on every level. Sonic Origins is that celebration, of the legacy then and now.
Level Two :
Visuals within the series, raised the bar on action platformers. Colorful, unique, creative, and expressive. Creating a vast world in every game. From the Genesis, Game Game, and the Sega CD. It brought something unique to every platform. When Sonic CD was released, the opening intro animation surprised everyone. Made by Studio Toei, legends of the anime world, gave their love into every cinematic. Crafting the unique journey, as Sonic CD unraveled before your eyes, as you made progress, including good and bad endings, which depended on how many Time Stones you have acquired, and made a good or bad future during your run in every stage. The replayability opened up so many possibilities
Level Three:
The music is timeless, from classic melodies, to unforgettable songs that are stuck in your head. There is no way you could not hear "Green Hill Zone", or "Chemical Plant Zone" back then. But even now, those stage themes are a part of us.
Note: Sadly some of the music in Sonic 3 & Knuckles, was removed due to legality issues with the Michael Jackson estate. So in order for Sonic 3&K to be re-released in this collection, key stage themes, and songs were omitted with the Beta versions of music used instead. They may not have the same impact as those stage themes originally released with the game way back when. At least the game is accessible to a modern audience.
Level Four:
Controls are a key part of the series. From the Genesis, and beyond, every button is utilized. The input is precise, the movement is flawless. Every game has that aspect of control as its first notion, it works perfectly. If you fall, or lose a life. (We will come back to this in a second) That is on you, and how well you played. The rush, movement, and speed, is amazing and sticks with you even long after you take a break from playing any game.
Anniversary Mode:
Speaking of lives, that system is gone in this version of the games. If you choose original mode, lives are still an option to use. Also in this mode, there are tons of goodies to unlock, with every coin (yes coins, just like a certain plumber. Why? I have no idea, I have been trying to figure that out for awhile) you obtain, you can purchase art, music, and more goodies hidden throughout the in-game museum. Within the Plus version of the game, there are more extras, including the Game Gear library of Sonic titles.
Bonus: There are new animated sequences for the intro of the collection, plus every game as well. They are lovingly created by the folks at Powerhouse Animation.
Rating: A must buy, for any Sonic fan. But if you have never played a game in the series, it is worth playing any adventure in the classic run.

Having said that, the sudden change is still jarring, but in a different way (being used to the original versions, which always stood out to me in ways I couldn’t quite figure out).

That was my gateway Sonic title! I still remember buying it for my OG Xbox and spending the first hour or two grinding to unlock every hidden game…Neptune wrote:This collection is good, but Sonic Mega Collection Plus on PS2 was better in my opinion. Still nice review @Kadosho.
