Yep, specifically a mage. Most mages study magic for years to learn to use magic. Zed, however, is part of the category of mages who uses magic naturally. That's his main character trait in the show (well, that and his lack of knowledge about his past).

People on Junihoshi don't have elements unless they are elementals, elementalists (aka sorcerers) or sha'ir. Zed is a mage (aka wizard), and his spells are tied to one of the schools of magic rather than a specific element. Zed's spells are mostly from the evocation school, with him being able to cast spells of lightning or cold, though he usually prefers to use the most basic of all spells instead such as Light, Ghost Sound or his favourite spell, Prestidigitation.
