The next console war begins soon?!

Nintendo Is Working On A New Dedicated Gaming Console Codenamed "NX" 630x10

During this morning's media briefing from Nintendo, Mr. Iwata confirmed that Nintendo is already working on their next dedicated hardware.

Mr. Iwata wrote:As proof that Nintendo maintains strong enthusiasm for the dedicated game system business, let me confirm that Nintendo is currently developing a dedicated game platform with a brand-new concept under the development codename "NX."

It is too early to elaborate on the details of this project, but we hope to share more information with you next year.

We suspect that this is merely an announcement to put to rest the rumors that Nintendo is planning on leaving the video game industry so we don't expect to hear much about this device until E3 2016 at the earliest with a release in late 2017 or early 2018.

As always you can share your thoughts and opinions in the comment section below.

Actually it looks like Nintendo is getting into the mobile market...this is from the PR email we received...:

Nintendo PR wrote:Leveraging the strength of Nintendo’s intellectual property (IP) and game development skills in combination with DeNA’s world-class expertise in mobile games, both companies will develop and operate new game apps based on Nintendo’s IP, including its iconic game characters, for smart devices. The alliance is intended to complement Nintendo’s dedicated video game systems business and extend Nintendo’s reach into the vast market of smart device users worldwide. Under the alliance, DeNA will also be able to strengthen its gaming business at a global scale by leveraging Nintendo’s IP. To ensure the quality of game experience that consumers expect from this alliance of Nintendo and DeNA, only new original games optimized for smart device functionality will be created, rather than porting games created specifically for the Wii U home console or the Nintendo 3DS portable system.

In order to create completely new game experiences for smart devices, all Nintendo IP will be eligible for development and exploration by the alliance. As these consumers enjoy the unique kind of gameplay found only with Nintendo, they will have the opportunity to explore even more premium experiences on Nintendo’s dedicated video game platforms. Information on upcoming games and availability will be forthcoming.

Nintendo and DeNA also plan to develop an online membership service that is accessible from smart devices, PC and Nintendo systems, such as the Nintendo 3DS portable system and the Wii U home console. The membership service, which is targeted to launch in the fall of 2015, will be built on DeNA’s extensive experience and capabilities in online membership services.

As part of the long-term relationship and commitment by each company, Nintendo and DeNA have also agreed to form a capital alliance. Under the capital alliance, Nintendo will acquire 15,081,000 of DeNA’s treasury shares, which corresponds to 10.00 percent of its total outstanding stock, for a total of approximately 22 billion yen. DeNA will simultaneously acquire 1,759,400 of Nintendo’s treasury shares, which corresponds to 1.24 percent of its outstanding stock, for a total of approximately 22 billion yen. The payment is due April 2, 2015.

Iwata confirmed that it is indeed new hardware. To be honest, this could mean anything, a new handheld (which is incredibly plausible), a new home console which is very likely and if there is more information they can give us next year (seeing as the Wii U is on its third year and most home consoles last 5-6 years) there could be a new home console by 2017.

Or a mixture of both, a home console and portable in one.

I'm guessing this is the next home console/portable hybrid system the N stands for Nintendo and the X stands for Cross

Agreed, but the venture into mobile devices does have me a bit concerned. Neutral

Yeah same here... I really hope they don't go 3rd party because of this :/

Yeah...I have a feeling that Ninty is biting off way more than they can chew. Nintendo Is Working On A New Dedicated Gaming Console Codenamed "NX" 1625187496

I mean mobile isn't real compatition, but it isn't Nintendos product so in terms it is basically 3rd party... This is how they go down? From greedy investors, I wish we could do something to stop this

Perhaps if we were as large as NL we could, but we're just a speck of dust in the eyes of Nintendo. In the meantime NL actually seems excited by this news. Nintendo Is Working On A New Dedicated Gaming Console Codenamed "NX" 1625187496

@Demonic actually we're still on the Wii U's second year as the console launched in November of 2012 so it hasn't even been two and a half years since the console launched. Neutral

@Rukia yeah sadly I don't see why people are excited... Nintendo on non Nintendo products seem.. Soulless

And if it's released by 2017, that's a good 4/5 years. The problem is, the Wii U isn't selling, it has hardly any 3rd party support, Nintendo has already knocked out their big titles and it's still not moving, I don't even see Zelda moving the console out the door. Heck, even most of the stores I've been to have refused Wii U's being traded in because they can't sell them.

I'm sorry to say, but the Wii U is practically dead, they need to make money somehow.

Surprised Nintendos mobile plan is to destroy mobile from the inside out! Very Happy

Woohoo! Journey into Nyx is coming out soon! cheers

Wait a minute...that set came out a year ago! I think I'm a little too obsessed with Magic: The Gathering right now. Razz

So Nintendo's working on a new game platform, eh? I wonder how they'll innovate the console market this time, and how quickly the population will dismiss their ambitions as ludicrous before they actually TRY IT and think, "Hey, Nintendo's on to something here...", just like what hapoened with the Wii U, and the Wii, and the GameCu- well, not so much the GameCube. But you get the idea. (I still adore the GCN, which has some of my favourite Nintendo games to date.) Rolling Eyes

I hope that Nintendo announces Animal Crossing U and confirms Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem at E3! I love you
