My older brother was a huge gamer. As an infant he forced me to watch him play the latest, greatest games like Mega Man and Mario. As I grew older I developed an interest in video games and Super Mario World was one of the first games I had ever played.

After days and days of trying to get past certain points (due to the fact my SNES would go out and delete my current data at any given moment), I found enjoyment replaying these levels over and over. It didn't feel like a task at all, rather, an opportunity to memorize and find every secret.

Super Mario World doesn't differentiate itself from the rest of the series like Super Mario Bros. 3 did. Rather, it simply perfects it. Venturing through the world map, you'll witness some of the most brilliant level designs in platforming period.

Another standout is the fan favorite's debut, Yoshi. The famous green dinosaur plays a significantly huge role throughout Super Mario World, as he's fun to use but more importantly helpful. Sadly the power ups are a little lacking. With only the Fire Flower and Cape as choices, World pales into comparison to Super Mario Bros. 3's arsenal.

Though if there is one thing I could rant about when it comes to Super Mario World, it's that the score is phenomenal. A soundtrack that will be stuck in your head for the rest of your life it's so catchy.

The GBA difference:

Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2 for the GBA, adds little to nothing new. Adding a rebooted version of Mario Bros. with optional local multiplayer isn't a must have feature. Including a little cinema before the title screen for Super Mario World explaining how Princess Toadstool was kidnapped by Bowser and including some unnecessary voice acting for Mario is, well, unnecessary.

Other than in-depth stats on your progress, nothing here that's "new" is worthwhile. Nothing to really make you want to play this version over the SNES original when, practically, this is the exact same game except on a handheld.

Conclusion-

The portable version doesn't really add anything worthwhile for Mario fans. Yet it's still as fun to play as it was in 1991. Which is why I think Super Mario World is like cheese: It's always better with age.

9/10

9- Awesome This game has little in the way of flaws, and is a highly enjoyable experience.

Super Mario World is good but I preferred the sequel I hope that it eventually will be released on the Wii vc Very Happy

This isn't one of your better reviews, but it's still good.

Nice review ! I did played this game just a bit, and I agree with you about the unnecessary new features that this GBA port has included, specially the voice acting. Razz

And that same rebooted version of Mario Bros. can be played on Mario & Luigi: Super Star Saga and Super Mario Advance as well ! what's up with that ?

I actually preferred the GBA version. Maybe I'm hallucinating, but I recall that after you beat the game, you could bring up a menu that allowed you to teleport to levels instantly without having to walk all the way there. You could also get 999 lives, play as Luigi in single player mode (he control differently IIRC), find Yoshi coins in castles and ghost houses, and the special world was unlocked differently. There are a few other inconsequential ones too. Very subtle differences, yes, but I appreciate the extra polish.

@Jnes
Mario Bros is consistently playable throughout the Super Mario Advance series (all four games, plus Super Star Saga for some reason). It's the same game every time, just thrown in for no reason other than to be the series trademark I guess.

@Yoshi
You could collect Yoshi coins in Castles and Ghost Houses to begin with. Luigi does control slightly different with his gliding ability from Super Mario Bros. 2 USA and no Star Road is unscathed until you beat the game 100% which then changes the color of everything.

Otherwise you're right on the money with everything else.

Also sorry if my review is a tad short. It's just I don't want to keep blabbering on and on. Super Mario World is a difficult game to write a full review on. There's just not much to write about here.(On the bright side 6 people on my Tumblr gave it a thumbs up, lol.)

Good review Very Happy

I really like your reviews ViewtifulJoe. Wink
